Navajo Nation eyes Upper Fruitland for next casino

I did not know that Chapters can pass legislation decrimalizing practices, since when did the chapters authorized to pass legislation for the Navajo Nation. The only stumbling block that can push the developmnet into delay or chaos is the Navajo Nation Council. It takes all 88 members of the council a few seconds to muddy the water or throw a monkey wrench into a machine. Shrink the size of the council and we can break out of this economic slump on the Navajo Nation.

That's good to hear. At least Navajos won't have to patronage the other local casinos that just take our money and gives nothing back. Why not Hogback? Upper Fruitland is kind of out of the way and N36 can be a dangerous road. At least Hogback would be just right off the main road.

I thought Farmington was a Rasist town. Now they want to put a Casino near by when 99% of the Casino custermers will be Navajo.

I hear that the Connecticut tribes get $17,000.00 a month per person from their Casinos. A person from UNM told me this. So the Navajos should be giving money to their members also every month in the near future. Wow, you Navajos are lucky.

Bottom Ash---Yeah right! there are too many Navajos to even get a cent like the Connecticut tribe. They're small tribes so they get to divvy up more money. We don't expect to see anything unless you're a crooked tribal politician or too poor. The rest of us have to work like everyone else.

doing away with half of them (council) will be a step in the right direction, then think about building casinos..

These so called studies, clearances & approvals will take awhile..

wait a minute...these studies, clearances & approvals are taking less time than a person applying for a lease...this stinks!!

Time to start buying up all the land in and around Durango. This will be the hotspot in the next 20 years. Navajo business interests need to wake up fast.

it's time things are changing, this chapter must have a land use plan in placed and has the casino planned all out some years back. people do need jobs to survive to support their families, however, i do not personally support the proposed deseret rock power plant, too many health ill effects around us that we don't know of until we ask questions.

Put it in Flagstaff, Az. you have a big town with interstate 40 running threw it. Or better yet put it in Seligman, Az. isn't that where Mcdonald bought that land for the REZ. Its on interstate 40 and you could build a huge truck stop and a resort and employ people in that area with jobs. Just too many casinos here in the area. That what you get with council members that don't get it. Just a little to late.

REMEMBER THAT GAMBLING IS NOT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT...supposedly, the 1st Navajo casino is now making 3 xs more than projected, but is the casino paying back the loan it borrowed from the Navajo Land Acquisition Fund? The NN Council waived the law in order to dip into the Land Fund for a casino, but it was not surprising to read about the casino not making their 1st payment as agreed and was trying to renegotiate their loan.

The casino needs to pay back its tribal loan before drooling or foaming at the mouth about another casino.

I oppose casino and class three gaming on Navajo Nation. The intent behind tribal gaming was to draw revenue from travelers, visitors, and non-Native population. To place a casino in Upper Fruitland or Hogback or Shiprock is not economically sound.

The Fire Rock casino employs 310 workers, 90 percent of who are Navajo. "Our payroll is in the area of $9 million," Winter said. "That goes into the pockets of the employees."

But, BUT, you cannot deny the fact that 9 million came from other tribal members pockets who were dumb enough to gamble away their government or tribal paycheck. All the so-called revenue is doing is going from poor Navajo's pocket to another poor Navajo's pocket. We need true economic development out here and not redistribution of the small pie.
