I applaud the Humane Farmine Association for, as always, being in the forefront of this problem and for their tenacity in the face of stiff opposition.

I think this new law is fantastic! As the owner of over 500 beef cows, I think it is high time the callous practice of quick loading an old or injured animal , and hoping she is still standing when you get to the auction, is deplorable. We owe these animals respect and humane treatment. If a rancher or hog farmer can't afford to euthanize a few head a year, then he can't afford to be in business. Of course there will have to be some room for common sense too. Sometimes animals are injured during transport. As much as people would like to think that animals are just like people, they are not. If a cow falls down on the truck, the others aren't going to care, they will just step all over her. They don't have manners! I hope this law spreads across the nation. I'm tired of our industry being shamed by the actions of a very few. Most people feel like I do, or we wouldn't be in the cattle business. We are proud of our cattle, and treat them as good as we can. If you live on a ranch, you know the cattle come first.

I once talked to a former dairyman who use to sell his cows at auction and he told me how he was able to increase profits by using this method:

If a cow would fall and couldn't get up, they would lift and support the cow until the animal regained enough strength to stand temporarily and then they would quickly load the cow into the transportation trailer, making sure the cows were "stuffed" into the trailer to make sure the sick cow was supported by the other cows and would not fall during the trip.

This was only one person. Who knows what other methods are being used to "increase profits".

That's exactly the type of thing I'm talking about, and it makes me sick! All I can say is this, support local farmer's markets because the little farmer is generally the involved farmer who genuinely cares about his animals. Do you think corporations who own thousands of cows care?

Better yet, reject meat, milk and eggs from your diet because obtaining them will always entail an unconscionable amount of animal suffering. An animal-free diet is also better for your health and for the Earth. See: http://www.vrg.org and http://www.TryVeg.com

Animal Justice:

Animals like Humans share the mastery of life, however, animals are bound to their biology. Not humans. If this is true why is it that we commit violence against animals to benefit. Food, clothing, and entertainment. We should be able to find more appropriate foods to nourish ourselves. Why is their a need to skin an animal for clothing unless one lives in the North Pole free from civilization to depend on? Also, why do we need to be entertained?
To have animals perform tricks, stunts, and
act for humans are abusive and primitive. Nevertheless, I am happy to read many positive comments in protecting animals.

I am a proponent, however, I find the initiative
inadequate to protect animals. The author did his best knowing society and their need for meat.

The best support for animals is to refrain from all abuses: eating meat, wearing clothing made from any animal, entertainment from rodeo's, horse racing, circuses, aquariums, and zoo's. Any form of entertainment which animals have to be used as objects to satisfy the physical senses are immoral and indecent. All the above contributes to violence which the Self becomes insensitive and psychologically bankrupt. Regardless of your development in consciousness please vote in favor of the initiative and protect farm animals

Animal Justice: I am surprised why there are no comments on the subject. Animals partake equal in life as humans and passing proposition 2 is essential to have fair treatment for animals.

To keep the subject open I hereby contribute a poem about bull fighting. Any poets for animal justice?

SAVAGERY of the MIND
Seeking pleasure in the act of torture is a favorite sport of Spain and Mexico.

Bullfighting generates heated debate with supporters arguing that it is an important cultural tradition and critics decrying it as a blood sport which brutalizes animals.

There are three phases, or trices, involved in each bullfight.

As the matador observes the bull's behavior, two picadores armed with lances enter the arena on horseback. The picadores stab the bull's muscular neck to lower the animal's blood pressure. Bulls often charge a picador's horse, which is protected by heavy padding.

Three bandoliers try to plant two barbed flags into the bull's flanks, weakening its neck and shoulder muscles through blood loss.

The matador enters the ring with a sword and a traditional red cape. He uses his cape to taunt the bull in a series of close passes, demonstrating his control over the beast.

The matador's work with the cape and sword is called fauna, which ends with the bull being stabbed between the shoulder blades and through the aorta or heart.

The bull's body is dragged from the arena by three mules. In a small room behind the stadium, it is butchered and its meat sold to carnivores, or butcher shops

Our savage instinct for pleasure dominates the sport of bull fighting. Bull fighting? The bull is trapped in the arena. The matador has no chance to compete with the bull in his natural habitat. The sport is staged, a thirst for blood like the days of Ceasar and the gladiators.

A Poem

Savagery of the Mind

Thousands come to the arena tickets in hand

to see the show and hail a tradition long ago

from Spain, a sport like the days of Rome

to demonstrate man's control over the beast.

A matador enters the ring with a mighty sword

taunting the beast, a bull, using a red cape.

A series of close passes; the proud matador

controls the life of the beast in the ring.

The matador works with his cape and sword his

savage ways and stabbs the beast for blood;

boast his courage hearing the roaring crowd

hailing the gladiator shouting for more and

more. The matador stabs the bull through the

heart standing clapping shouting more more

as the gladiator flows blood to show his might

like a coward stabbing the beast more than

twice trapped in Ceasar's arena and no place

to go stabb, "kill him", thirst for blood

shouts the crowd dragged from the arena by

three mules the beast. The bull sliced by a

few behind the stadium and the roaring crowd

skins for meat to be sold to carnivores to

satisfy the savage mind beastly appetitite.

What is your comment on bull fighting and fair animal treatment?

It is definitly sickening what some people do to animals. It makes me wonder how "humaine" humanity really is. How come some of us can see the sickness in the abuses to animals yet others get a thrill out of torturing the helpless? Does the "savage beast" within ones genes prevail at times over learned love, or does love from within one's being, a.k.a. genetic, superseed at times the cruelty learned from those in our environment who perpetuate violence? Ah! The missing link in "humanity!"

Debbie

Truly, you are a woman of my heart.

You are correct. The missing link is the use of the Mind. Since the brain is the superior organ the answer in transformation in within the psyche. The brain is deeply conditioned and finding psychologically security in its conditoned state transformation is rare but available to anyone instantly. No religion, government, or society has the capacity but the individual taking responsibility of emptying the mind.(psychologically)

The human is not bound to his or her biology because of the brain. We are the only species not bound because our brain observes differently than animals. For example: violence. The human brain observes and in that observation he or she inquires into the nature of violence. The brain becomes highly sensitive and in that state of awareness the brain has the capacity to observe the nature of violence which is the observer. Because of the brain we are not bound psychologically and have the capacity to awaken our intelligence where love and compassion aboud.

The "transformation of the mind from within." An instantaneous "AWAKENING" is rare, yet it IS possible and DOES OCCUR. It depends on how important the truth is to a person. Denial is deeply engrained. Sincerity and love of the truth and love of what is right morally, over the lies that support one's ego, are the key to that transformation.

Honestly in Ontario:

The next time you sit and eat meat observe the meat without judgment. Merely look at it and observe. In your observation how does that affect you seeing the meat on your plate? Simply observe and find out.
