How can you tell if someone is using heroin? I don't want names or anything like that - I just want to know what behaviors and signs to look for.

Heroin can be injected, snorted or smoked so there are different things to look for:
Finding needles, razor blades, burned spoons
Wearing long sleeves in hot weather
Alternating between sleepiness and alertness - Falling asleep or "nodding off" during conversations
Having money or other things of value coming up missing
Shallow breathing
Injection sites and/or infections
Runny nose
Nausea and vomiting
Small pupils
A "lost" appearance in the eyes
Little motivation
Spending time with a different social circle
Disorientation
Difficulty speaking
Poor memory
Acting as though extremities are heavy and droopy
No interest in the future
Dirty and messy - don't care about their appearance

Allergies cause most of those symptoms for me, a fail safe way to check is for pin point pupils. If eyes stay pin point in a dark room, something is causing it. However other medicines will cause this, but if you have that and other symptoms on the list, keep an eye open.

Oh, and the money/valuables disappearing, that's a big red flag too.

What about bouncing off of the walls and energy? All I ever hear people say is "they need energy", so how is it they nod off at the same time too? This is why determining if someone is using is so difficult. Please describe more to those of us who are perplexed when trying to determine if someone is using heroin or not.

I'm not as sure about heroin, but a lot of pharmaceutical opiates (to some) will give a burst of energy at onset, but as it goes on the 'nod' sets in. It really depends on the person, their history of use, the drug and the dosage. The energy a person shows really can't be a lone determining factor in use.
For many new users something like Oxy will give a energy boost followed by feeling 'up' and good and that's it. At high dosages and long time users, they *may* get some euphoria but it's a sleepy/dreamy type 'high'.

So generally (and I mean 'generally' in the strictest sense), more 'natural' opiates such as heroin, morphine and the like give a sleepy/nodding high. Stronger semi-synthetic pharmaceuticals will sometimes give the energy type high. These drugs are Oxy, Hydro and Oxymorphone.

But outward signs of energy levels it is very hard to determine if opiates are the cause. But combined with other signs and it can lead to an overall conclusion. However if they are falling asleep and waking in mid-sentence, you can be quite sure it's an opiate!

. Yes herion does make you sleepy and nod out if your wanting the energy boost then that's with opiants such as painers but it depends on the persons tolerance level some people has there's so high that nothing effects them

I appreciate the responses. It is very hard when dealing with an addict who is attempting sobriety. Once they cross over to using again, all of their previous skills of lies and deception become enhanced and stronger, and my abilities to analyze and detect come more-strongly into question. I know constantly accusing someone can push them into using again, but I don't want to be stupid and fall for lies again either. There just doesn't ever seem to be a good situation when dealing with this crap.

Thanks for the information.

Is heroin primarily shot up around here? Or is that a misconception I have from TV.

Most heroin around here is powder, so many start using by either snorting or smoking. In the end it seems users either shoot up or smoke it, but I still believe the majority inject. As from what I hear, once you shoot up you realize how much you are 'wasting' by using the other methods

I do not envy your position and in fact, if they aren't family, I would suggest you just walk away. As with infidelity, trying to figure out if someone is still 'stepping out' or not will drive you both crazy and be a gigantic thorn in the relationship that will keep it from prospering.

There are many forms of heroin or opiates. I am taking or have a for a patch. It's heroin based. It would probably kill a large elephant.

You have no idea what you are talking about. If it's a patch, and an opiate, it is only fentanyl. A fully synthetic opiate and in no way "heroin based". It could probably kill an elephant however.
