Eminent domain measures stir up strong feelings

Prop 98 and rent control
The measure phases out existing rent limitations regulations through “vacancy decontrol" on a unit by unit basis. Renters currently living in rent controlled units will continue to receive the benefits of rent control until they vacate the unit. Once the unit is vacated, property owners have the right to set the rental or lease price. Nothing in the measure prevents government from providing other options for affordable housing, including voluntary zoning. Prop 98 does NOT make any changes to other renter protections or tenant laws- such as the fair return of deposits or protection against unfair evictions.
