first the bars,then the liquor stores,then the convenience stores,then the grocery stores.first halloween,then st patricks day,then labor day,then Fri. nights,.....-you get the picture.

I agree. Make the penalties expensive enough and a big enough pain and hopefully you'll reduce the troublemakers next year. |

It always amazes me how readily people are willing to throw away other peoples property rights. You, SIR, are unamerican.

This is kind of rude. Bar owners need to make money too and Halloween is a big night for them. The university has already taken St. Patrick's day from them by having spring break that week (which screwed it up for the rest of us because now CUSD is having spring break that early too). Let them make some money when they can.

what the hell is this going to accomplish? it will not stop them from drinking at house parties and walking drunk from house to house. there are some adults that still like to go out on halloween and a have a few drinks. is that fair to them?

First of all:
Most of the problems on Halloween were NOT caused by college students. Secondly: Most of the problems on Halloween were not in or around the bars,the bars were full of college students, who were not causing problems.The problems were in the neighborhoods, and the perpetrators of the violence were for the most part NOT college students. Finally: There are already laws to deal with the type of crimes that were committed. Perhaps if we as a city focussed on the gang issue and crystel meth and that sort of thing instead of fretting about college students we could get back to the good old days when chico was a fun, rowdy, college town but not a violent one. |

So on this day should we close the resturants that also serve alcohol or perhaps the liquior stores, lets make them close as well. Your idea doesnt make any sense, these (children) are being held accountable for there actions. When they got out of line the got arrested. Chico invites them here with the University and college and it is up to our law enforcement to keep the peace. I think Chico State and Butte College should remind its students to conduct themselves in an adult manner and if they are arrested perhaps they can suspend them from attending school. This is a time for learning for them, for most of them this is the first time they are away from there parents control. Chico State is the solution and the problem to this manner, the police department should work very close with both schools to come up with solutions to a few of their (problem children). Lets not hurt our local business owners.

As others have pointed out, the problems on Halloween, other holidays and weekends in general are not focused at the bars. In fact, the bar owners in Chico are fairly responsible in regards to public safety.
The issue arises not from college students, but from adults between the ages of 18 and 30. Just because a person in Chico falls in the "college age" range, does not make them a student. There are many young adults that live in the south campus neighborhood who are NOT enrolled at either the university or community college. What brings them to Chico? They come from smaller, surrounding towns (as far away as the Oregon border and coastal/mountain towns) because there are greater job opportunities in Chico, or because they moved with friends/significant others who may be attending college. It was stated in the news reports that a portion of the violence this year was gang related. What do gangs have to do with the university? Nothing. Once those issues are addressed, the violence will go down. Address the drug issues, the violence will go down. People have made the blanket statement that it's always the college kids. It's about time for people to correct their assumptions and acknowledge that it's young adults, often NOT enrolled in school. |

The problem is not the bars or the liquor stores or the restaurants that serve alcohol. The problem is the university's. Until Paul Zingg accepts responsibility for the havoc his students are wreaking on Chico, nothing will change.
Chico State needs to raise its standards, by a lot, and stop accepting students who don't care about getting an education and only come here to party. Until that happens, get used to the status quo because nothing else solve this problem. |

"The problem is the university's. Until Paul Zingg accepts responsibility for the havoc his students are wreaking on Chico, nothing will change."
Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou. A large proportion of the aresstees were college students. Denying the problem encourages the problem. If the University was not here there would not be this problem. It is not all college students but they form the core of the problem. They host the parties, they invite their friends, they turn the student ghetto and residential neighborhoods into a beer cup garbage dump. The problems do not begin in Chapmantown, they do not begin North of town, Bidwell Park neighborhoods, they begin in the student ghetto. |

If bars were to be closed, it would just mean an increase in "house parties" among the college students. This makes it even more dangerous. Things get much more out of control at these parties. You close down the bars, then we have the over 21 party crowd at those house parties too. Is that a very good mix? This just equals more trouble.

yup oh as a former bar employee ... this letter is a joke. The city already asks bars to not open so early on st pats, and they dont, but asking bars to close early on holidays is ludacrious |

This is why I failed you in logic slammin211s, you were sampling the product too much.

I think the Nazi's were the last to close off alcohol sales on holidays.
Perhaps you whiners should move to Utah, Germany or Russia. White punks on dope is an american tradition and you are voting for prohibition. No drinking alcohol when you want to party. And no walking in the park. |
||||
Locals should not be allowed to enter that part of town, since it is the local, homegrown college students causing the most problems like throwing rocks and raping chicks. |

"Locals should not be allowed to enter that part of town, since it is the local, homegrown college students causing the most problems like throwing rocks and raping chicks."
Fair enough. And you can provide your own police and fire services. Also your PG&E, Satellite and hospital for vomiting drunks. Stay in your ghetto, burn it down, take all the drugs you want, rape who you want, assault who you want or be assaulted. But keep it in your ghetto. No beer cups, abandoned pets, no noise outside your border. Live like the illiterate animals you are but don't force it on us. |

I know... let's close church on Easter, then we'll close Great America on spring break, We could close the ice cream store when the movie gets out, and how about shutting down public transportation during rush hour? That'll stop em!!! Letter writer and those who agree need to get a life.

Aren't police supposed to arrest anyone who is drunk in public? In some communities it is an arrestable crime. What's the law read in Chico, crime or no crime?
I am only asking questions. Please no shooting the questioner. |
||||
|
I was told a lot of the violence is more gang related than college student related, is that true?
I can't believe the students are completely innocent but were is the majority of violence stemming from? |
