Police Chief: Flynn's DUI due to prescription drugs, not alcohol

City Councilor Mary Flynn's Friday arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence was most likely due to prescription medications, not alcohol, Police Chief Bruce Hagerty said Monday.

ok, so if anybody else does this, it is a mistake? If she can't park her car right and runs into the wall, then book her. She has a history of alcohol abuse. Don't give her a break cause she is of noteriety. If she loses her job, so be it. She should not be in a position of making decisions for our city if she is on meds anyway. Great let somebody make decisions on my life who can't even get home at 530 pm at night. Sounds like an early start to the weekend in chico to me. Less than a mile from the police department, what a moron!

look around you folks - say you're on the freeway, doing about 65. How many of the drivers around you are whacked out on presciption drugs?

What about your kid's friends? Their parents? Not to mention, their teachers and other adults at the school?

Hey Chief Hagarty, are Chico police officers allowed to work while under the influence of prescription drugs?

Would the E-R have printed an article such as this for Joe Public??

And in three weeks, when we have all forgotten about it, NO alcohol or anything 'bad' will be found.

Who cares?
Obviously Flynn has connections in the police department, or this story would be just another D.U.I. bust, by Suzy Q. Public.
Why is the Police Chief saying anything at all?
She mixed different prescription drugs to get high and crashed her car, end of story.

I took a small dose prescription drug to eleminate fluid in my body. It caused a series of fainting spells, Yes, one while driving. It's easy to jump to conclusions about other people, sometimes.. it can happen to you and who will believe you? Think about it... If the lab work shows alcohol then of course Ms. Flynn needs a repremand, but wait 'til the lab report is in.

Be sure to note the next time the chief speaks out on a potential DUI case. Surely it will be prior to any court date, or test result and he will be speaking on your or my behalf.

The tests from the lab have not yet been processed yet the chief of Police is already setting the table for charges to be dropped.

John/Jane Q Public would have already lost his/he high profile job as a new hire with a second DUI arrest, and not have been released from jail the same evening.

Seems to me we would all like to have the chief in our corner when we are arrested by his officers.

I'm sorry there is a question here? DUI? Driving while intoxicated, that’s what it means right? If she had killed somebody would there have been a question? It sounds like you are implying that we should leave it up to the individual to determine if they are impaired. You ever been hit by a drunk driver? I have it altered my life forever; I have no sympathy for someone who chooses to drive while intoxicated.

I am so relieved to know that she is only hooked on drugs instead of alcohol.

Driving Under the Influence! DUH! Of prescription drugs or not it's still a DUI. Probably will get swept under the rug and done deal. Now if I were to get pulled over while under the influence I would get a DUI. Hopefully she will get the same punishment as everyone else would.

I have sat in on a few cases and have watched what has happened to the DUI's and there were a few with the presription drug charge. They gave them no mercy and this should no different. If she gets off it will be bull s..t How can we teach our kids to be good and obey the laws if our county can pick and choose who they prosecute. Although we all know they do, this case is in the news for everyone one of our kids to here. These county members NEED to fire her with out pay. Think about who is paying them? I say kick her to the curb. They did'nt have a problem doing it to my family member.

Come on, she's a high school teacher in town, and Chico High no less, renamed Liberal High School. Everything goes at Chico High! This will give her greater empathy with the students who are on drugs and alcohol. That's why the superintendents were also such a good examples, right? Somebody has got to take control of this school district in a hurry. She better not be in front of our children in a classroom.

Yesterday's article on Mary Flynn was simply trashy. Why did you not use a quote, oh, "perhaps meth, or cocaine" instead of "alcohol"? Why did you choose to publish that quote at all, tarninsing Ms. Flynn's reputation when nothing has been proven but a bad parking job. Clearly Chief Haggerty regrets the comment. The ER should regret printing them---unless the ER has a particular agenda in regards to Ms. Flynn.

These comments are unbelievable. Rule by law, the greatest experiment in democracy, states that a citizen is "innocent until proven guilty." Reading some of these comments is downright scary. I hope these folks never serve on a jury since they make up their minds after reading an inflammatory article in the newspaper.

Since when did being under the care of a physician and appropriately using prescription drugs turn into abusing or mixing prescription meds to get high. Sure in some cases that migh tbe accurate. But the assumption is not accurate for the overwhelming majority of people on prescription meds.

What I think we have here is a bunch of people who were lighting up the fire for a stake burn. This is despite the very obvious fact that Councilmember Flynn doesn't drink (I think this was pretty widely known and accepted - as reported in several papers some time ago). When the ER issues its report that alcohol was involved (makes it much more sensational doesn't it?). Then low and behold, the Police Chief has to speak out indicating that alcohol was not a factor as erroneously reported in the ER. Poor Chief of Police has to come out and correct the media's bad reporting. Of course it isn't his job to correct all of you (and I'm sure he's thankful).

Oops. Looks like the lynch mob was wrong again (what a surprise).

Wanna keep playing, lynch mob? Let's see how many others we can get wrong.

That's not fair! To compare Mary with the superintendents who were malicious and deceitful is ridiculous. If she has a medical issue then give her a break. The superintendents deliberately did things to destroy individuals, schools, and this community. Mary didn't do that. Thank God, no one got hurt, and she had the good sense to pull over if she felt sick. The superintendents didn't "pull over." They chose to do what they did until they got caught or the school board stopped them or people sued them. Who would you rather have as a city council person, Mary Flynn, Scott Brown, or that Staley lady? An "impaired" Mary would still get 100% of the vote. She shouldn't have been driving, and I will give you that, but don't compare her to the ones you did. No comparison.

Randall and Ann are right. You rushed to judgment with no concern of the ramifications of ruining reputations. This community has been through that a few times.
