Mercury is contained in the 700,000 tons of blast furnace waste that ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor has stored directly on the ground less than 500 feet from Lake Michigan in Northwest Indiana for the past two decades.

The levels topped out at 120 parts per billion. That's well below what's considered hazardous, and about one-seventeenth of what's acceptable after an environmental cleanup in a residential neighborhood, also known as the Risk Integrated System of Closure (RISC).
