Never trust your bank account to anyone not even good old IRS they are the biggest crooks of all, been there I know how they feel. I will never do automatic bank draft for anything again. I would not hold my breath on the IRS returning the money to your account.

You don't stand a chance against the IRS unless you are a member of congress and then you can get away with anything. As for us "common" folk... I feel for these people in the story but the IRS can do what ever they like, at anytime. Horror stories far worse than these abound our nation and even when the IRS has made a mistake there is little to no recourse a person can take.

This is a story of a couple trying to do the right thing. I can not believe the IRS took advantage of this situation like this. Everyone knows times are hard. I now know don't try to work anything out with the IRS until I got the all the money. It is bad when you can't trust the IRS.

I'm sure the money will be spent on something worthwhile in Afghanistan... Possibly part of another CIA payola for Karzai's drug-desaling brother.
Trust me it can happen

Whenever you give a federal or state institute permission to legally take money from your personal bank acct. they will and can take whatever you have in that acct. It is done from state to state. Va isn't any different from any other state. They take all to meet the any accumulated late fees that had been tacked onto the amount you owe. They know that they have to leave enough it your acct to keep it active for your use and that may be just what your bank require. Also they don't have to notify you that they have done so. The reason why I know this is because I had a student loan and they agrue to allow me to make payment plans also . I did just what you did , gave them my banking info and when I went to the bank to withdraw so cash it kept telling me that all I have was $5.00 dollars in it. So I investigated and thats when I found out what had been done. I soon closed out that acct and also switched banks because the banks have to summit that info to them because you gave permission. So everyone take notes don't agree to do anything like this. Send money orders so they can't tap into yout bank acct. That also applies to collection agencies also.. Trust me I know

In 2005 I was at work and the HR person informed me that VA Tax was placing a lien against my pay. I called them and was told in 2000 I underpaid $20 and 2001 $30 but they had been unable to find me to collect. I had moved and they had my new address on both my tax returns! I had an accountant fill them out and wanted to see what the mistake was and she said NO...that i could either agree to pay $100 a month for next 5 months or take my whole paycheck I had no choice! I owed $500 because they claimed they couldn't find me for $50 total. Sometimes these people are so power hungry it crazy.

Thieves. You know there aren't even any written laws that state we HAVE to pay taxes, yet we can go to jail for NOT paying them. They are thieves, bullies who do whatever they want without consequence because they're our "government" So sick of them all.

They need to have BB&T close the account and create a new one or the IRS will just screw them again at least the risk is there.Obviously we must now look at the IRS like we look at any sort of threat of stolen info, checking account info etc as they will use it to steal from you if they get the chance.Gee you can't trust the government in any form, surprise surprise.

I know this couple and the 2nd part of the problem is that BB&T does not want to work with them. They want to close the account and turn them over to a collection agency. They are selling their house before they lose it and with that type of item on a credit report who will loan them money to buy a smaller house? So what the IRS started, BB&T is going to finish.

I feel for the woman and her family because I've been in the same spot years back and it was really no fun at all. The I.R.S. really doesn't care if they leave you with nothing and what's done is done, the're sorry. If the country would go to a flat tax we could do away with that ugly monster. our law makers did us a favor and created this behemoth we should demand an overhaul of them (the irs) instead of the health care system.

Once again, this just proves that the Infernal Revenue Service has too much power. It's the only venue in which you are GUILTY until you can prove you are innocent. They do not have to present any proof or any information to confiscate your assets. They don't even need a judge to OK their actions. It's time for a reform of the IRS. How about it, Barack?
The IRS agents will say anything to get your money or property. If you ask 50 IRS employees the same question, you'll get 50 "right" answers. In fact, none of them will be correct and you'll just end up further in debt. As for them "finding" you, they make NO effort at all to check for a forwarding address. They assume all of us are out to cheat the IRS and really don't give a damn what damage they do to you and your family. I was told a few years ago that I owed $900.00 in unpaid taxes. When I asked for more info, I was told point blank that I could either stroke a check or they would seize my checking, savings, and retirement accounts to settle the amount owed. Needless to say, I flipped 9 one hundred dollar bills in his desk and told him if he didn't issue a receipt and a document showing that I paid in full, then the State Trooper (a friend who was off duty) with me would immediately arrest him for extortion. I got my receipt and that's the last I heard of that. Of course, my tax returns were audited for two years in row. My attorney told them one more time and they'd be in court on harrassment charges. The audits ended then. To this day, I still don't know why they wanted an additional $900 and I guess I never will.

IRS, Idiotic Recovery Service, thats what I call it. Like yourselves I also had a situation, having had to repay taxes on a payment program. I would ask all of you, even though it upsets and scares you when they call you to be nice, polite and courtious. An IRS agent called me at work one day, described to me my house, my property location, descriptions of my vehicles, and the basic contents of the first floor of my house. I imediately thought someting was wrong with this picture. I asked the agent for her information. When she asked why I told her I was going to file suit against the IRS, their representative (HER) and a second suit againt her in civil court. Having had trespassed beyond my front door, looking in my windows; while family was at home, etc etc. She politly stated that she could waive on a one time basis all administrative charges, late payment fees and intrest as long as I could stick to a prearrainged payment plan. Isn't that something. Additionally I no longer keep money in the bank. If your paycheck is going to be garnished, they can only garnish so much at a time. Don't Quote me but I think it 15-20 Percent. Only if you complete the paperwork. that another mountain to climb. I say if they don't take the right amount out in the begining, their fault, they need to live with it.
