Strapped Morgan County cuts workweek

Most Morgan County government offices will be closed Fridays starting next week as county commissioners try to save money in the financially strapped southeastern Ohio county.

These counties are conducting an experiment. What happens to your economy when the education level of your citizens actually declines from 1950 to 2009? Answer is, you go into an economic death spiral. Too far from Columbus to be commuter suburbs for yuppies who have country life fantasies, they really have no economic reason to exist except for a few farmers.

Kudos to the Morgan County commissioners for (a) recognizing the problem,(b) prioritizing the options from the citizen's view such as keeping the sheriff's office open, and (c) actually doing something constructive about it. Even more amazing, they did this WITHOUT fruitless grousing about how they inherited this mess, and without endless and meaningless finger-pointing delays between the administration and the legislature. This is leadership, and Morgan County is an example for our state, other counties, and certainly the City of Columbus. Good job!

I commend the Commissioners of Morgan County for accepting and trying to do the right thing by being responsible for the debit. However with Morgan County being statistically one of the poorest counties in Ohio how will this effect the employees of the county agencies? But on the other hand the people of the county could possibly make a stronger effort to pay county fines, real estate taxes or increases sale taxes?

....and presumably they made this decision without hiring a firm to do an economic "study" first.
