What jail cell did you just get out of? Jerk. You are the one with problems. I am doing drugs because, I stated that everyone should have the same benefits and pay the same taxes as everyone else? What planet did you come from Bozo? Go back under your tree and drink some more of that homemade hooch.LOL Come back when you want to have an intelligent conversation, that excludes murder.

What a load of crap! So married couples are being penalized because they are married? Yet, civil unions of any doesn't have to pay the taxes of a married couple? So, I would imagine that the women who has a load of kids, can get on aid and draw the benefits from the state, because her partner either wants to save money, or make money. Just because someone doesn't want to make that "commitment" . This is so unfair, no wonder Illinois our going broke. You might think it is great, but these people want to have the benefits and pay their taxes like everyone else, and reap the benefits. They don't want others picking up their tabs. Civil Unions are just a legal way of saying we are going together a way out, because they don't want the responsibilities of being married. I WAS having a great morning, but now I am sick. No disrespect to you and your lady, my grandmother didn't marry because she would have lost her benefits. I have to agree with these guys, marriage and civil unions are not the same. Everyone should be paying their fair share, and not be penalized for being different, and I guess in this case, marriage is "different", which is a load of BULL CRAP!

not everyone has a 'fair share' to pay, however. do you have any idea how much a person gets on social security? they can't afford to lose even a penny of it.

it's the government's job to work for the people, not the other way around. all tax money should go back to the citizens in the way of benefits.

Yes I do, I have been helping a family member who is on it. You are assuming that is all they make. One of them had to have worked in their lifetime. A lot of seniors in Illinois are retired coal miners and other state jobs. I know of some people who are getting coal miners benefits and so is their spouses, while living way above middle class. It is not fair to the average joe who barely making it out there. I also see many people who are living together who gets food stamps, every type of program to paying utility bills, with an income of more than $3000. a month . That money is for the poor, not for somebody who doesn't want to take responsibility for marrying their spouse. Illinois is going broke, I know a woman who is in her 80's who barely makes it can barely pay, her two dollars for prescriptions. Her husband is a deceased vet. Yet she gets letters of being cut, and these goof offs are sucking the system dry, while we sit back and watch. The gov. keeps digging in our pensions that WE, have put money into for OUR retirement, so they can party and give our pension funds away.

I don't think you do either. I highly doubt someone is getting food stamps with an income of $3000/month. Maybe a single parent with 5 kids and no assests. Even then, the benefit would be less than $240 a week. I'd like to see you try to feed six people on $240 a week.

Under federal rules, to be eligible for benefits a household's income and resources must meet three tests:
Its gross monthly income — that is, its income before any of the program's deductions are applied — generally must be at or below 130 percent of the poverty line. For a family of three, the poverty line in federal fiscal year 2012 is $1,545 a month. Thus, 130 percent of the poverty line for a three-person family is $2,008 a month, or $24,096 a year. The poverty level is higher for bigger families and lower for smaller families.
Its net income, or income after deductions are applied, must be at or below the poverty line.
Its assets must fall below certain limits: households without an elderly or disabled member must have assets of $2,000 or less, and households with an elderly or disabled member must have assets of $3,250 or less

Where have you been?LOL I am not talking about families with a husband and a wife. I am talking about a single woman who is living with a man who has five kids with him. They are not married, they are "living together" He can make 5,000 a month, and they get away with it everyday. I didn't say it was legal but it constantly goes on. Our government doesn't check things out, they have cut corners in every dept. I am not at all talking about a family that is legitimate, and is in the lower class income. There are so many people taking advantage of the system, and getting away with it. Where have you been or are you blind? Don't you ever get off the computer and have a life beyond this? I know all about how much people are hurting, I see it everyday, and they are the ones who needs it! Not some chap trying to constantly scam the government, taking things that they should not get. It is easy to take that route. I think you are missing the point here, civil unions don't pay what they should, especially if they are opposite sex. They can choose, you can not. Now, you can't have your cake and pie both, LOL you are either for it or against it. I don't think their should be a choice in civil unions we are all entitled to the same thing. The only difference is many religions don't accept it, so you go to the one who does. I think everyone should pay their fair share, except for the poor. People should not be penalized for being married, civil unions should have to pay just like a marriage and have same benefits, if the state doesn't allow marriage. It is that simple.

Since you don't think I know what I am talking about, let me tell you about the real world.... A elderly lady 87 years young, widowed by disabled vet. Her income under 700. a month, she is able to get food stamps, barely enough to survive, she is on medicaid, but can hardly buy her medicine that is 2. bucks per prescription. In order for her to get this wonderful package she had to cancel her prepaid funeral expenses cash it in to get her benefits. I see it all the time. So please don't tell me that I don't know, I do. When people are scamming the system and our government is assisting people to get all of these tax deductions, stealing from our Social Security, things needs to change. If you don't get it from this conversation, I don't know what to tell you.

You are kidding right?LOL You don't have a clue!LOL Tell me, is the world you live in perfect? LOL You don't get into your neighbors business, and they don't get into yours.....that is a good way to end up in a shallow grave around here!LOL You obviously are not from Southern Illinois or you would know it has become one of the poorest areas around. You are blessed if you have a descent job, the better paying jobs are for men, so the women have kids by these guys who won't marry them. It goes on all over, not just here. You must live in a city where no one knows each other, or you would know this. The better jobs are for the women who have a higher education, they make it on their own. They have cut a lot of that out too.

It's nice to be able to do our civic duty to report known fraud, but what do you do when you get caught in one of those catch 22 situations where you know struggling people who are friends of yours, and turning them in would devastate them? What would your conscience tell you to do in such a situation?

i was born and lived in west virginia coal country, then the family moved to western maryland, and finally to new york state. believe me, i understand the problems that people face there.

my first wife was a nys welfare caseworker for several years and i got to hear about all the problems inherent in the system every day.

my mother is 90 years old and living in north central minnesota... her only income is social security... if it wasn't for my sister she wouldn't be able to afford her meds... and if it wasn't for her husband's retiree's insurance from the alaska state police the two of them wouldn't be able to afford the over $1000 a month that they would have to pay out for their own meds.

in the meantime, it's the government's responsibility to take care of these people from cradle to grave, rather than starting ridiculous foreigh wars in order to steal another sovereign country's natural resources and make american conservatives even richer.

That is NOT the point. I'm saying get rid of the fraud. I'm not saying get rid of food stamps because there is fraud. But who is willing to hire more government workers to investigate fraud? The Republicans would scream bloody murder at that suggestion.

p.s. I don't know anyone involved in welfare fraud.

The government picks and chooses what they want, and where it will benefit them. Do you really think that the ones in Congress and public figures who are saying help the poor now are doing it for their benefit? Find out what is going on behind closed doors, and what benefits they are getting, just to chop the poor guy. Do you actually think they are trying to save social security? They are taking money out of that and retirement pensions while lining their own pockets . I have friends and family all over in government jobs, I know a lot of retired senators. It is all about what can you do for me, they are borrowing from Peter to pay Paul so to speak. I am tired of the poor guy getting all the cuts and the scammers , all classes getting richer. The poor man goes to jail and the rich, gets away with it , because they have the tax advantages, you try paying 15%(inside trading)LOL and see if you don't end up in jail.LOL I do agree with you over the wars, we need to keep our money here on America's soil, and give it to their own people, the poor. Nothing makes me madder than someone scamming and now they are making it legal for the ones who do . I just don't think it is fair that they are penalizing marriages and giving tax breaks to the jerk off dads, that don't want to marry these women. Civil union of the opposite sex have choices civil unions of one sex do not.

It is the way of life in many poorer states to survive. Then you have the boyfriends, of these girls with kids that are making great money, that come and go, when they need to. I doubt they will hire any government workers, they are shutting down so many offices in Illinois, and now, they are talking about State Parks. Things are really bad in the system, at all levels. But you will never see anyone in Congress or the Senate to take a cut in their salary. They would rather cut medicare and medicaid.

I have been a Democrat all my life, "until" this year. I now think they both are corrupt. They need to kick them all out and put all new in. Like I said, we are only seeing things that they want us to see. What matters is, what is going on behind those doors. There will have to be a lot of changes before I go back. I don't like my money being stolen out of our pensions funds, that personally comes out of my paycheck. State workers are getting royally screwed. Did you know that teachers don't put any money into their pension fund like most people have too? We take care of that for them, I could go on, but you will see their pension won't be settled until after we vote. LOL They want those teachers to vote, then they are going to make them pay like everyone else, out of their own pockets . I hope. Why should someone who works a minimum paying job have to pay for a teachers retirement? They make good enough money to pay for it themselves. There are teachers who make between 40 and 70 thousand a year. I think we all will see many things this election. I voted for Obama last time but I don't think I want him this go around, and I don't want Mitt. In my opinion we don't have much to choose from....
