Lingerie store says no to breast-feeding

Ironic, considering the posters and billboards in the store expose more that a woman breast feeding.

Many states (like California) have adopted laws to protect a mother's right to breastfeed anywhere she likes.

Corporate policy is to allow breast feeding in the dressing rooms, according to one report I read online today.
This sounds like the work of one over zealous employee, which no doubt will be treated in a manner he or she will find less than desireable.
Things like this should never reach national attention....

Since the Victoria's Secret employee thought it would be more appropriate for a mother to breast feed in the bathroom next door, I think that the employee should eat their lunch in that bathroom for a year.

You forget - this is South Carolina, where in Anderson a lingerie/ novelty
shop is being zoned out of business. Heck, we don't even condone having sex
standing up - it might lead to dancing...

Unless the store was busy and there was a need for dressing rooms, I don't see what the problem was. I have seen women breastfeeding in the middle of malls before with creepy old men circling them like buzzards. At least this woman had the repect of the public and herself in mind and wanted to go behind closed doors. Breast feeding is a calm clean and quiet thing, it's not like she was going to spill milk everywhere. This employee over reacted. Probably some snobby old prude. They watch you like hawks in there anyway.

I happen to know all the facts of this situation... I was shopping at the store at the time. One there are only two dressing rooms at this store both were busy. and Two, The employee didn't say that she could NOT breast feed in the store just that the dressing rooms were not set up for this. FUNNY that the lady didn't pick the maternity store to pull this stunt.. I am sure that she got the attention that she wanted. Also the center has a spot set up in the security center for this. How awful that this person has made such a big deal out of nothing... Should the employee have pushed the paying customers out of the dressing rooms? NO, she offered a solution to the problem.

If you're discreet enough nobody can really even tell if your breastfeeding an infant in public. I'm not offended by seeing not so discreet mothers feeding their children in public either. When the baby's hungry you feed it. It's foolish for people to be so squeamish about something that is so natural. Telling the mother to use the bathroom seems really disrespectful to me unless the bathroom had a separate lounge area designated to nursing moms. Breastfeeding mothers are not out looking for attention nor are they out to cause scenes. They can't stay home 24/7 for months until their children are weaned from the breast. The rest of the world needs to be more accomadating and understanding and stop showing it's ignorance.

I do not mind if she does it if she does not mind if people, men included, watch her do it. If she gets attention then she has to deal with it.

I completely agree with shopper. She did not need to inconvenience a busy store and impede business so she could feed her baby. There are private, appropriate places to breastfeed. Don't boohoo when someone tells you you chose an inappropriate place! The whole story has a tinge of attention seeking. Big bad corporation against a pitiful mother who just wanted to feed her baby. Find somewhere else to go! I have courtesy enough not to clog up a business and inconvience other shoppers so I can eat my lunch in private. When I breastfed my baby, I went to a private location so perverts couldn't get their jollies.

All this in THAT store? I thought Victoria's Secret did not even need dressing rooms. Of course I have to take the word of people who have been there!!!

Who needs a dressing room to breastfeed anyway? When I breasfeed in public, 99% of the people walking by don't even realize it, it usually takes another breastfeeding mother to recognize by the baby's position.
If this mother is uncomfortable breastfeeding in public, she should have gone to the nursing room that the malls here have.

From personal experience..."the small sector of society that gets "turned-on" by a woman breast-feeding" are men like Bob (see above). These same ones probably get turned on by seeing naked store mannequins. It's the breasts that turn them on, not the breast feeding, but they can't differentiate between the two. The reaction is similar to that of Pavlov's dogs, you know, the ones that drooled every time the bell would ring.

I doubt seriously she was trying to get attention. Crying hungry babies would get far more attention. She probably just got the closest available bench behind a door. No one who has ever been in that situation can blame her. To the person who said they were shopping there that day, honestly, if a store is that busy, they need more than 2 dressing rooms. Who wants to spend 20 minutes looking for a nursing room when the baby is crying? All you want to do is settle THEIR tummy and YOUR nerves. To the person who thinks men get turned on by the sight of a nursing mother - all I can say is, dirty diapers make a great arsenal (ask me how I know). But you *cant* see anything when I nurse my baby. Fuzzy baby head and maybe an inch of flesh (that looks *gasp* just like any other darned flesh on my body - a darned 1 piece matronly bathing suit shows more cleavage). And I know, I've nursed that child standing up in Walmart while browsing clothes and diapers. Not a soul in Walmart ever said I should move or stop feeding the baby. Jeez, people need to get a life. If I had gone into VS to look at stuff and my son started crying, I'd have sat down in the dressing room too. It's not a STUNT (though it does require a bit of flexibility and coordination) nor is it a vie for attention. It's a mom wanting her baby to stop crying. And you *really* don't want to know what I think of people who have something nasty to say about nursing a baby, public or private. Honestly, it's a rather pitiful show of ignorance and utter stupidity. It's almost a throwback - I want to tilt my head and stare at those people in amazement that they remember how to breathe.
