Central City Gets High Tech with Laptops

Full story: KWWL-TV Waterloo

“It's helping me learn a new system because I'm not used to Apples, er Macs”

An eastern Iowa school district is jumping right into the technology age. The Central City School District just spent about a $550,000 to buy new laptops for every teacher and student, from fifth grade up. via KWWL-TV Waterloo

What is the central city school thinking? For a small town they are spending money like a spoiled brat in toy store. First the bond issue didn't pass then like a sore loser they argue until they get their way. Lets not forget that the ballet was confusing and we heard claims of did mine actually get counted. Then they make claims that the SILO tax will be used to off set the bond. So that should help and yes it did sound good. Now they decided to spend it on lab top computers instead. So lets see they didnt exactly lie and on the other hand you do want the students to have the best. So how do you argue with that?
Now they plan on hiring a company to destroy the old high school. What a waste, what a shame. More history for the landfill. What does this teach the younger generation? If you compare the old high school to buildings to those at Cornell college or other schools of age you will find that they are older and were better up kept. The finger should be pointed to the care takers of the school. If they couldnt manage the job, what kind of care will the new school get. Now they hired FBG to do the cleaning. I wonder who will do the maintaince and ground work. This is just a thought but i'm thinking subcontractors or maby give the jobs to someone they know.

I would like the students to get a better education than i did but i very much doubt it. When i went to school they kept changing teachers. Some of it was a disagreement of facts in the books. Like the world was built in seven days or the scientific version. If the school wants to preach religion than by all means let the churches pay for it.
We also had equipment for vocational learning but never got to use it. We could look at it all we wanted but didnt get a chance to learn to use it. We had a computer back then to but only to play games on. We learned to play moon patrol. Then i see the equipment eventualy got auctioned off. At least someone found a use for it. My point is i see a pattern and i expect it to stay the same. Dont get me wrong i thing computers are a good idea. But think of this for a moment. Hand wright a essay and type one and what do you get. The typed essay on the cumputer will always be easier to do and take less time. The slower child even one that may have a dissability will produce a nice looking essay. The written version will take longer but you will improve on your writting skills. The essay or tests can quickly checked by the computer and not individualy. Quite simply its a numbers game that improves scores. Some might call the whole situation a weed and seeding of the school and community. The raising of the taxes chase the poor families out of town. Statistics claim the poor have lower test scores. While the poor are leaving those that can afford to move in are the seeding. In exchange test scores should improve and the hope is that it will bring in more of the class of people with the same beliefs they want. If all goes well more houses will be built and more will attend the local churches. It may be for the the greater good but it is twisted and wrong no matter how you look at it.
The question is what will they think of next ? Central City is a small town with suddenly large ideas. I would like to see all students get a great education no matter if they are rich, poor, multi religion or multi raced. With each idea the taxes will only go up further. We are a small community with special intrest groups bent on getting what they want no matter what the cost or sacrifice. If you like the small town life but yet want all the perks of a large school like Linn Mar or washington you need to make a choice. To think that you can turn this school into one that will be equal in a few years is not feasable. If you want it than find a large contributor willing to foot the bill. At a time when the economy is bad and the bills keep geting larger you would think they would spend less and wait. Maby they didnt study the depression or maby they are so well off it doesnt affect them.

I see the school is now inacting a bullying/harassment training. They should have done this ages ago and it will be interesting to see the outcome. I remember in the late 70's a student getting hit over the head with a piece of concrete on the play ground. The kid couldnt walk and blood was running down his face. He wasn't far from the teacher when the incident occoured. Only after a student notified the teacher did she notice what had happened. The teacher was neglegent and should of been held acountable. Since she didnt see it happen the bully got away without punishment. The hurt student was rushed to a doctor for treatment. The student's head was swelled up larger than normal and balance problems were noted. Soon afterward the student was diagnosed with a learning disability that affected grades. Years later, thousands of doctor bills, unemployed and broke. The ounce student now adult realizes that day changed the rest of his life. Only if the teacher was doing her job. If the entire event wasnt bad enough that injured student was constantly botherd with bullying. Then when the student took a stand the victom was labeled as the bully. The question should be asked why? Did the bullies get special treatment or did the student not fit in. Another incident happened in the 80's when a teacher said to a student "you smell like burnt hair" and made it clear that he didnt want him in the class. The students response was "shut up that is not nice". The teacher gave a detention with threats of more. What else could the student do but report it to the princable. When the teacher found out the student then was harrased and punished more. This is the Central City school i remember and i dont believe it has changed.

Wow!!! I have a lot to say about these posts!! First of all, there are a lot of schools that visit Central City to look at the 1:1 learning with the computers because they hope that their school can soon get this same kind of learning. I think all of these other posts are because you are mad because you didn't have this great opportunity or your children or something. I don't honestly see how you can think that having the great opportunity to have a computer is something that should be talked bad about. What job is out there that does NOT require computer skills?? Central City does have a low income per family and a lot of them cannot afford a computer so this is a great way to get one into their homes. I remember when assignments would require internet research and if I didn't get it done at school then I got a bad grade because I couldn't do it at home. There is always going to be cons about everything in the world but can you really just stop and think about all the pros and they will for sure out weigh the cons!!
Yes, tearing down the old school was probably not the brightest idea ever but if we are not going to use it then why keep it. I do know that it does suck to look there and see an open space and all those great high school memories are sort of lost! But what can we do about it now. It was voted upon so I guess the people are complaining must not have voiced or voted their opinion!
The story about the student on the play ground really got to me because how can you honestly think the teacher is at fault. Her job is to watch everyone Not just one person!! Any honest person that is a parent or babysat cannot say that they haven't ever missed something that has happened!! I know I have. Not this bad but how many parents have had a kid break something when they are around or a kid wonder off in a store? Yes it was a bad thing that happened but come on nobody is perfect!!

Daily Horoscope for June 1

Taurus

Some people are full of talk today and the trouble is that they don't know when to shut up. Who needs all the trivial details? Retro Venus is favoured in Gemini, so financial matters may resurface, and you may be inclined to change your point of view. Think long term, especially if you are tempted to form an important liaison, or partnership.
