all coaching should be done by volunteers. we dont have buses for our kids. everyone is cutting back. there are plenty of people that would volunteer to do it for free for the kids. wake up boe and stop the supplementals!

All the good ole boys need to go! How much do the coaches get in total? Salary (what do they teach and how relevant is it to a real education) plus coaching contract (those are automatically renewed aren't they? Meaning no new coaches can break into the network)????

I love how many people have no clue what is going on with coaching. No more Taxes, nobody would volunteer their time to coach the athletic teams of Springboro. More unrest, the coaching contracts you refer to are the lowest in the GWOC. Money Train the coaches make about a dollar a game. The amount of time the coaches spend on practice and games for the pay they receive is ridiculous. Baby new year, the BOE is trying to reduce the contracts for coaches next year because they know that the teachers will not support coaches, many teachers resent the realtionships that coaches develope with their athletes and are jealous.

Aren't the teachers coaches? And aren't many of these teachers/coaches coaching so they can coach their own child? Wouldn't they offer to coach without a supplemental? I believe there are parents out there that would step up and coach. Many of them with experience that cannot break into coaching now since teachers have the first shot at coaching contracts. We need change in our coaches.$750k is a lot of money!

When you put your mind to it this really isn't a question of the quality of Springboro coaching or replacing coaches.
Rather, this topic is about pathetic boomer & buster-types within this and other communities that want nothing other than to re-live their pathetic adolescence vicariously through "their school" any way they can. Somehow they believe they can manipulate their real-time current experiences to be better than the experiences they still remember of their mostly pathetic adolescence.
Sadly, this vicariousness has shifted from the bleachers where it tormented our children, and is now critiqueing coaches, our neighbors and peers.

Instead of concerning themselves with quality of coaches, parents and community members ought to be focusing on more important matters such as how & why teachers and administrators within Springboro and other public districts can consistently get away with artificially inflating homework grades and test scores just so that the state "Excellance" bar can be met.

Eventually, would an annual trophy awarded for pole vaulting mean anything if the bar kept getting lowered?

As my son approaches high school I'm concerned about the sports programs. Many people on the poll say we need new football and basketball coaches. Would anyone care to explain?

My son played pee-wee and Jr. High, however after such a terrible Freshman experience vowed never to play again. There were several that year that opted out and never played the game again. It's not even about winning or losing, it's about teaching the game and developing the discipline. Winning and losing matters for varsity, but the rest of the time it's about team and player development. Springboro's teams are always as deep as a puddle because they play the same 10 players all the time. When those 10 graduate or get hurt, there is no one prepared to step up. That's the coaches fault. The handful of players that played with the Ballard boys had been the only ones on the field since pee wee and when they all graduated at the same time, there was no one to pass the baton to. No other players had been given the chance to learn. I don't even watch football and I understand this.

Boro2Long, you clearly don't understand. The depth of the football team is lacking becuase Coach Wilhite and his coaches run a demanding program. The Freshman team is a high school team. Therfore it is about winning. If you are not good you will not play. The 7th and 8th grade football teams play a varsity and jv schedule to develop those young players. SO your comment about 10 players playing is false. You look at the Varsity roster and they have maybe one or two players playing both sides of the ball. Last time I checked there were 22 kids on the field. That means 20 or more kids playing football on Friday nights not to mention the JV game on Saturday morning where kids get an opportunity to play. Kids attempt to play football at Springboro and can not take the demands of the off season workouts and pre season as well. Maybe if mommy and daddy wouldn't make it so easy for their kids to quit something they started there would be more kids playing. I know for a fact if my son starts something I'm not going to let him quit in the middle. He will finish what he started.

"lowering the bar" is all about "raising the salaries" of teachers and ensuring job security for educated union workers. Money, money, money, it's all about the money. Wasn't it reported in the local news that teachers will be paid more money WHEN the "Excellent with Distinction" rating is earned? Also, doesn't the "system" have to continue to lower the bar and "dumb down" our high school graduates; or else there will be NO BIG PAY JOBS for "remedial learning for dummies" educators in college.

750K pay to play fees projects the attitude "Sports programs are priority in this school district." We always put our money where our heart is... Can you imagine the outcry in this school district if parents were charged out of pocket 750K for new textbooks for the classrooms?

Why not post coaching positions on the school website? Let everyone have a shot at this instead of keeping the same people on year after year. This good ole boy networking needs to end.

It's a new ballgame why not make a fresh start? I doubt parents, future and former players will complain. They will most likely applaud.

Want to get your high schooler into a blue & white Panther jacket this school year? No, you don't have to make your teenager sweat it out through rigorous varsity tryouts any longer! Apparently all they need to do to make a SHS squad is sign up for tryouts, sit along the sidelines & fake some sort of injury.

Daily Horoscope for June 1

Scorpio

Watch out when dealing with other people early on, because it will be awfully easy to get bogged down in petty details. What's more, as the Moon moves into Scorpio later in the day, it's very subjective so you may find it quite hard to separate your emotions from your thoughts. This isn't a good day to discuss anything important, unless you want to go round in circles.
