Hey Theo, thanks for the input. Your premise of the American and Nato presence in Afghanistan doesn't hold water. The US has an el gigante border with Mexico, a free flowing drug channel, operated in a business like manner with supplies, beaucoup supplies, I must add, from Mexico. Colombia and the wonderfully benevolent regime of Hugo Chavez with his good ol' buddy, Calderone, in the Mexican DF. Afghan dope, to use the words of OCW, would more likely find its way into Europe. The cartels are smart enough to ship Western Hemisphere goods into the Western Hemisphere and Eastern into Eastern. These businesspeople are pretty savvy, fully knowing about shipping and muleteering. Easier for a mule to enter the US from Mexico than Afghanistan, comprende? America has its own poppy growing fields from the Rio Grande south to the Tierra del Fuego. No need of Afghani entrepreneurs. At this moment there's probably enough dope float in NYC and Chitown to supply the entire US drug scene, not counting the beautiful Bay area of Frisco.

Now about the oil scene, the US gets the largest percentage of imported oil from the two thirds of NAFTA, Canada and Mexico. It wasn't and isn't about oil. Like the dope rope, the oil scene is closer. The Western Hemisphere has beaucoup oil so no trouble with that. Again, shipping and transportation is factors, like the oil pipeline being constructed from Kazakstan through Afghanistan, Pakistan into India. Hindus and muslims can work together ECONOMICALLY. Electing Paul would guarantee an attack from Iran, on the USA and Israel. The Islamic extremists are not rational people, they are not building nuclear weapons because they feel threatened by us. They are building them because their religion tells them to eliminate us. This they intend to do. They also know Paul will not defend against their attack. He might as well put out a "welcome mat".
When people make war on your country, as the Islamic extremists have done to the US, you can fight them on your own soil, or you can fight them on theirs. There are no other choices. Where would you prefer the bombs drop, on your home or theirs?

Paul's notion about defending the country is after the fact. Department of Homeland Security is already in place. He would have to disband the Department, part of the cabinet of the Presidency and I don't see that happening. In the event of an attack by the followers of mo, I personally don't see Ron Paul twiddling his thumbs telling the American people, now, now, boys will be boys, they didn't mean it. I keep hearing such things as one person can't cause all this in the defense of the present person in the White House and yet you want us to believe one person, Ron Paul, in the White House would keep the country from defending herself. Even Le Emperor can't work alone. Funding come through Congress. Without funding of an ally, Hanoibackyhochiminhcommunists can wipe out an army. Without funding Taliban kicks American butt. A president may send troops in, Congressional funding determines if troops stay. Ron Paul would defend the country, more so if he was president. Defense and offense are two different tactics.
