I was a member of the armed forces on June 25th, 1950 when the Korean War broke out, having two months to go on a three-year enlistment. A couple of weeks later president Truman gave me another year, a "Truman" year. But I stayed in the states. If I hadn't enlisted when I did I most certainly would have been sent to Korea and wound up cannon fodder like Sergeant Holman. I'm happy for his widow for the closure she has finally received.

The story of the remains of this hero finally being returned to the soils of his hometown reminded me of a Vietnam era song sung by Sgt. Barry Sadler for a fallen friend.
Lay the green sod on me Carve my name in stone Lay the green sod on me The soldier has come home Let me go to sleep now I'm tired and my body is sore Let me go to sleep now to march and fight nor more. Lay the green sod on me Carve my name in stone Lay the green sod on me the soldier has come home. |

How heart-breaking... I can't imagine the pain she was going through during that long waiting time.
Glad he made it home and she can now have a peace of mind. |
