Pickaway County has always escorted funerals for any service from any location in the county if a car is available. The deputy will exit his car and salute the procession as it enters the cemetery reagrdless of who the funeral is for. Many smaller counties in southern Ohio will still escort funerals upon request of funeral home.

Franklin Co Sheriff's Dept also does escorts but some families can't afford to pay for them. It is a beautiful thing to see them get out and salute the deceased and their family and friends as they enter the cemetery, regardless of who they are. Also saw this done in Plainview, TX, when my BIL passed away about 5 years ago.

A big thank you to all law enforcement and our military for your service to our great country. God bless America !!

Yes. Definately a big Thanks for those who do escort the funeral processions and do so professionally. BUT and also unfortunately, in Franklin County.............. there are some young punk idiots who don't pull over for the police when they are TRYING to get them to stop. Let alone when they are just trying to get them to pull over to pay respects for a funeral. Rural counties are different for the better.

This business about "pulling over" for a funeral seems absurd to me. I understand that the procession gets the right of way through traffic lights and stop signs. Additionally, it's not appropriate to attempt to pass one or more of the vehicles in the procession to get ahead of them. However, if it's on the opposite side of the road, I don't agree w/ the practice of pulling over. That's a great way to potentially cause an accident.

Respect........It's all about RESPECT. How many funeral processions do we really see on a daily basis anyway?

I rode Motorcycle Escort for Funerals for several years. The act of standing at attention and giving a Salute at the Cemetery entrance is showing respect! I also noted that it gives a slight lift to the Family at a very trying time! KEEP IT UP!

It is inappropriate to potentially cause an accident by pulling over b/c of an oncoming procession. You think is shows respect. I do not and will go around you if you pull over in front of me.

You would probably run over him to get to your next hair appointment, funeral procession or no procession.

Glad you had this article, I was at a funeral a few weeks back and the drivers on the roads were disrespectful, breaking the law, basically, psycho. Their were semi trucks getting in our funeral, cars cutting in and out, almost causing wrecks. It was terrible. What is wrong with people? and this time, please folks no excuses for the maniacs.

You get great exercise leaping to conclusions, show inanity by deciding it would be for a frivolous "hair appointment" >snort< and are certainly suggesting I'm an aggressive driver in any circumstances.

I understand it's illegal and do see it as disrespectful to do any of the things the poster after you indicated has recently happened. However, I fail to see why so many people think it's being disrespectful to not pull over. I didn't even notice if traffic on the opposite side of the road was or wasn't pulling over at the various family funerals over the years. We have so many people in the country who are looking for reasons to be offended.

One is not concerned when going to the down the road behind the hearse carring Granny if the cars are pulling off, their only concern is what Granny left them and hopes its more than any one else.

It's about putting others' loss, and their sensitivities, ABOVE, your own.
NOT pulling over, or 'racing around others' while glaring at them, says, what I HAVE TO DO 'RIGHT NOW,' IS MORE IMPORTANT, than this family's irretrievable loss, I'm too self-absorbed to delay my oh-so-important day, by three minutes, to show some respect.

Whether this is how accurate- or how you SEE yourself- that's how those who CAN put others' feelings first, interpret your actions.

Hopefully the folks here who are looking for reasons to be offended do not have a concealed carry permit. If you do have that permit, hopefully you don't have that loaded gun near you while driving b/c it certainly increases the chances you will be adding to the body count. Good golly.

It's now been added that I "race around" and "glare" at other drivers. While I do drive around them, I never race around them. Nor would I be giving them the evil eye or the bird or blare my horn or come this >< close to side-swiping them or anything else any other overly sensitive person wants to tack on. When going around another vehicle that is pulled over, I actually ease off the gas and give as much space as the situation allows for safety.

Maybe people pulled over and maybe they didn't for my grandmother's funeral procession. Maybe people pulled over and maybe they didn't for my grandfather's funeral procession. Maybe they pulled over and maybe they didn't for my two uncles' processions. I didn't notice b/c it's simply unimportant and I did not and will not take it as these strangers being disrespectful of my family and me if they don't pull to the side.

Interesting- might YOU not be 'jumping to conclusions yourself, now-
'racing around and glaring' are things that have happened to me.
If that ISN'T you, then- sort of defensive, aren't you?

Speaking of giant, non-sequitir conclusions- Where the hell does law abiding 'CCW' carriers, come into this? You think you have something to fear from permit-holding, law abiding citizens- paranoid much?

You wrote your first message as a direct reply to my message. I, too, am a law-abiding citizen and am disgusted some people here are taking me to task when I am following the laws on this matter.

I would like to thank all of you who show the compassion and respect to pull over for funeral processions. With the fairly recent deaths of my grandparents and nephew in the military, I can assure you that I did notice those who pulled over. I did notice the pedestrians who stood and removed hats. And to the older gentleman who actually stepped out of his car and saluted..thank you. Some may be inconvenienced or see these acts as silliness. It gave me great comfort to know that many strangers made an effort to show respect for both the living and the dead.
