I was stationed in Iran for 24 months from September 1964 to September 1966. We were a U.S. Army field survey company working to help map Iran. One of my many assignments was to make monthly trips to Tehran to purchase a large truckload of food at the commissary in the lower level of the main embassy building. While my order was being processed, I would walk to the front of the Embassy to see the American flag for that feeling of a connection with home. We had a small safe we took to our various field base camps throughout the country. The only contents were our food and beer money and a document with instructions for emergency evacuation in case of an overthrow of the Iranian government. We were instructed to immediately go to the embassy for protection and evacuation instructions. I have often wondered what the other U.S. military and civilians did to get out of the country after the takeover of the embassy.

Daily Horoscope for December 22

Cancer

If you're busy with a last-minute Christmas shopping trip it will be easy to lose track of how much you're spending, particularly if you're in a panic and desperate to tick off every name on your list. However, you might be in for a nasty shock later on when you tot up the massive amount of money that you parted with. So try to keep a running total in your head or stick to a strict budget for each gift.
