I live a few miles outside of Greenville. There does not seem to be a lot to do in Greenville, so we sometimes travel to towns like Sherman to shop, eat, etc. We don't like Paris as much, but like the layout of the town with the loop and they are growing and doing some new construction....lot of industry in Paris. Sherman has so much that Greenville does not including Outback, Olive Garden, Best Buy, Cheddars,Texas Roadhouse,Logans Roadhouse, soon to be 2 hospitals, mall (not great but better than Greenvilles excuse for a mall), Kohls , nice movie theater, etc. What does the city of Greenville do with its revenue? Is anything done to improve the city or attract new businesses? Are any of the buildings/houses that are falling in ever torn down? I heard someone refer to Greenville as a "dirty" town. It seems stagnant. Will it die with the economy? I don't mean to complain, but it would be nice to be able to spend our dollars at home (rather than Sherman). Does anyone else feel this way?

Hey! Greenville's got a nice movie theater!
And ... that's about it ...
Granted, the city has a LONG way to go, and don't expect to see a whole lot happening right away, but there is some progress being made.
Before I start though, comparing Sherman to Greenville is like comparing an apple to ... a smaller and less attractive apple.
Sherman has a population of about 37,000 people, is in the middle of the Sherman/Denison/Ardmore microplex and has been growing a lot faster than Greenville, which pretty much has its same population it did back in the 1960s.
However, there is some hope for Greenville.
For one thing, everybody wants to build hotels here in town, lots of hotels. In the past few years we got a Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and La Quinta (now Best Western) and there are plans to build a new La Quinta, Comfort Suites and Fairfield Inn.
A huge new shopping center is on the books for along I-30, we're getting a Dairy Queen (finally!), and there are plans to build some new sit down restaurant in front of the mall. And, while some of those national restaurants would be nice to have, I still love to eat at the local joints. I'd put CB's or Tony's against the opposition any day.
The city can't do a whole lot with its money because ... it doesn't have a whole lot of money to spend. A lot of the money it gets now is tied up in paying off bonds for the sportspark and the exchange building downtown and they just sold $20 million in bonds to pay for a new sewer plant, because the EPA was on their case.
None of the major chains want to come here, because Greenville just ain't growing. As I mentioned, we've been right around 25,000 for decades, while cities all around us have been booming.
But a Canadian company is wanting to build a giant development just west of town, claiming 50,000 people want to come there.
I'll believe it when I see it.

Thanks for sharing that info. I didn't realize these things were coming to Greenville. Like you said, I'll believe it when I see it, especially with the economy. It seems like the population of Greenville would grow, especially being on a major interstate & so close to Dallas. I came over here from another state and was paying something like $50 a year in property tax. In Texas, I am paying about a $1000 a year for property tax to Hunt county. It's good not having to pay a state income tax, so I guess it balances out. I won't benefit from a sportspark, a sewer plant, the school system (we homeschooled), or any of the things u mentioned. I guess the money is being put to good use somewhere, if nothing but paying someone's salary.

As long as I can remember, everybody just heads west to Dallas. If you can't find what you're looking for there, DFW International Airport can take you most anywhere in the world.

I don't think Greenville is a "dead" town, any more than most other small cities in the area.
I do think that this is a "dead" forum, based on the lack of posts and the lack of news covered. One feeds into the other. A lack of news posted on the boards results in a lack of people commenting.
Seriously, stories about a well-traveled preacher and kid chefs are the ONLY things worth mentioning from Greenville?
I live there and I tend to think there are a LOT of other subjects worth talking about. I've started a few topics myself, but they never seem to go anywhere.

Well, I don't know if the Greenville forum will ever be as exciting as the Paris forum on Topix. Whether that's good or bad, I dunno ...

Actually, you probably have a point. There's a lot of bad-mouthing and gossip on the Paris forum. Quantity is not always an indicator of what is good. Sometimes we have to look at quality. Words can be void and sometimes harmful.

I just keep wondering why there is so little Greenville news posted on Topix? Why don't they access the Herald-Banner, or the local radio stations, to find some stories we can comment on? Almost all of the posts I have made were generated by stories in the newspaper, but I can't do it all myself ... can I?

Yeah Greenville has gone downhill since the early seventies and has never fully recovered. Those that run Greenville have allowed drug running to go unchecked. They would rather take the tax dollars to line their own pockets than to invest back into the town. Take for examoled, the Johnson/Stonewall street overpass had been fully funded YEARS before construction started, but the money just dissappeared. No one was ever help liable for the dissappearance of the funds. SO, taxes were raised yet again to recoup the lost funds so the overpass could be built. My father worked for the city of Greenville for 28 years, before he had to leave the city over injured on the job, he had been burned over 78% of his body. He could tell you stories of corruption within the city that would curl your toes. So if you want to place blame, look no further than you local corrupt city officials.
