Well as far as i know. A wealthy man from the Hewlett area owns the property. There are three store fronts that have had very minimal success and have remained open for business despite the horrid conditions the grounds have been kept in. Personally I think its a travesty and a total eye sore. I live in the area and frequently take the gibson train to Manhattan and find the station to be disgusting. I have thought about taking it upon myself to photo graph the station with all of the trash that is just lying there...and doing a service to the community and picking it up. Sending the pictures to the herald and getting a little hype behind the topic.

Wow. My post has been there for about one year. Finally someone responds. If you want some help with photographing the garbage, i'm with you. I just battled Long Island Water and Valley Stream for weeks about the mess they left on page road (rocks and pot holes). Finally, they came to clean it up and it still looks terrible. This is a great neighborhood, but the village completely ignores it. The train station has great potential, but you are right about it being disgusting. I'd be happy to go to the village and file a formal complaint. I found out that the owner of the property plans on developing condos at some point when the current leases end. The building is literally falling apart.

I moved into Gibson about 3 years ago and prior to my house purchase checked into a lot of other areas. I also attended town meeting and the gibson community meeting (which for good or bad has since disbanded). There was mention on the new condo development being erected at the station but most of the problem came from local residents not wanting a "large condo development" in their area....well, wake up , there are 3 large developments that have existed in the area for years , right along Dubois and Gibson.
I pass those "abandoned" stores almost daily and am very distraught by the shape they are left. The locals would rather have businesses in that zone which would be great but when there were businesses there none of them patronized these stores so they went out of business. Now nobody will restart a business there because of the way it looks. DO SOMETHING , IT IS REALLY KILLING THE NEIGHBORHOOD ..and not to mention the property values. I don't think the racial diversity has had any impact on the values in the area , the block I live on has had 3 new families move in and 2 are minorities (which I thoroughly appreciate) but the dissarray of the station area and the roadways make the area look unkept and that does kill the values OK, just my 2¢ |

Gibson is a great neighborhood. It was a great neighborhood since it was built in the 1920's. The original builder, a man named Gibson posted a sign at the train that said: welcome to Gibson, a Christian community. All were welcome, he was using the sign to attract families, and it worked. Anyone who is a decent and hard working person fits right in. There was always talk of the neighborhood changing, and there still is. The worst changes are when the houses are left unchanged for 60 years. Any new family always improves the housing stock, and by extension the neighborhood. Those looking to stir up racial animosity will always end up alone. The many times this issue has surfaced, it gets squashed down by the decent people that call Gibson home. Again, if you are a decent person, come on down. If you are a punk or derelict, you will not be welcomed here.

Just curious, drove through the old hood the other day and noticed a slew of young gentlement in White dress shirts and black dress slacks and young ladies in ankle length dresses, white dress shirts and kercheifs. Are they mennonites, plymouth brethren, exclusive brethren or some other denomonation.
Missing the old neighborhood, it was and still is great. |

1 Now, one might argue for the minorities right to move here with "If they can afford it". But The Truth is THE CAN NOT. I've done my research, every home with a minority family with in a 5 block radius of my house has purchased their home with the help of the same kind of loans that caused this housing crisis. YES, they all really did get sub-prime mortgages. How do I know, mortgages are public information! Oh and the best part is, two of the five houses have just gone into forclosure! Great right? They'll move out right? No they won't because their Hommie in the White House, Barack, just signed legislation that will save these people from losing their homes! They'll actually have their mortgages reduced so they can continue to drive your property values down. I'm so happy that I sunk my 20% into a Black Hole. |

Gibson is gay...you should totally try it out some time. And those blacks...the darker the berry, the higher the chance of getting food poisoning.Thats how the song goes.

Just bought a house in Gibson! There is nothing wrong with a little bit of diversity. We could've bought a house wherever we wanted but instead, we chose the area due to its convenience and the school district. Don't see any reason why you should not buy here. |

Oh by the way... We got an amazing deal on the house :)

I think you may be talking about the Orthodox Jews. There have recently been more Orthodox Jews moving into the neighborhood. They look very similar to mennonites. I currently live in VS with my husband and 2 year old daughter, and I think it is a great place to raise a child. I truly enjoy the cultural diversity in the area, as well as learning more about other cultures. A lot of young people from many different backgrounds are moving in and we all get along very nicely. There is no reason to throw racism into this discussion, the bottom line is the train station needs an upgrade and the housing market stinks for the entire country. |
