I'm from Iowa City and the family name is very well known (which of course doesn't make the story any more tragic).

The husband is almost certainly dead -- killed when he drove his van into the concrete post on the freeway.

And the city didn't let him out. This isn't a city issue -- these kinds of crimes are county and state (or even federal) prosecutorial issues.

The city had nothing to do with it. The judge set the bail. It was paid. He was free to go. And embezzlement is a far cry from murder. Who could predict that he was going to snap if, in fact, he's the one who did it.
My heart goes out to the family.

My heart goes out to the family. Why did he feel the need to take his wife and kids down with him? Very sad?

I believe the CITY pays the > judge < & also I will stick to MY opinion thank you very MUCH!!!!
Yes maybe the wife & kids were CLUELESS on about this action of the husband/dad. Still think he should of stayed in Jail without a bond..JUDGE made a BAD decision to let him pay the bond..very SAD situation for the rest of the relatives to deal with ):

I am familar with this situation. He posed no risk and was seen to have deep ties to the community - that is why he was released on a pretty steep bond.

That being said, the bigger issue is why the name of the family was released by the AP before family and close friends had a chance to be notified. A dear friend of mine knew this family well and his siblings were best friends with the wife. He and many of his family found out when surfing the net. Would it have killed the AP and both local online papers to just give the bare facts and hold off on names until the family had 8 hours to get notice out. This is not the way to find out that someone you've known your whole life has come to such a tragic end.

fine you want to kill yourself for what did- go ahead. But why did your wife and children have to pay as well? As well has the rest of the families and friends. SO very very sad.

See the problem is in the water, that river that supplies that area for drinking water starts in Minnesota. Ofcourse this makes as much sense as saying he was no danger to anybody when he really was. Ok if he did not do it, he is still a danger. Come on this guy was busted big time and he broke down plain and simple. If he wanted to kill himself, fine let him do it, not take innocent ones with.
