I'm new to this forum, but wanted input from anyone/everyone on the timing belts. My wife's 2003 Jetta 1.8T and her friend at work and one of my friends at work have all experienced timing belt breaks...and subsequent severe engine damage. VW corporate has refused to help because it's out of the 60K warranty. The service guide says to replace them at 105K.
I'd like to know if anyone else had issues with these belts on cars that had between 60-105K. If so, please let me know. I've contacted a lawyer and am planning a class action lawsuit against VW - because this should not happen. When the belt breaks, it trashes the engine. Timing belts should never break, much less at 100K miles or earlier. Please let me know so we can get this fixed and wake the folks at VW up. I for one will never purchase a VW and am going to tell everyone I know to stay away from these junk cars!!!!! I have several responses so far...but am always looking for more. I am currently dealing with a firm in NJ. Please email me. Chris Ingle wtknght1 aol.com |

My 2002 VW Jetta is currently dead in my garage. The transmission has gone out at 120K miles. I have had 2 water pumps burst and need replaced. This car has fallen apart very quickly and I am still making payments on a car I can't drive. Anyone know about this class action lawsuit? Please e-mail me at dcupchurch@gmail.com

Yep, my wife's 2003 1.8T broke the timing belt and trashed the engine. The service manual says to check it at 105K miles. Her's BROKE at 90K. We're trying to start a class-action suit against them now.

Same old problem sludge 2001 VW Jetta 1.8 I am a mechanic and this oil change deal is crap. These engines have a problem and VW should stand up and take care of it. Mine sits in the driveway down and out. How can such a great car to drive just give out without warning. Once tht oil light comes on its over. The oil is full but its not going where it needs to. Sign me up for the lawsuit

I contacted the lawfirm who did the 2002 suit against them and spoke to Matthew Mendelsohn... We've spoken a couple of times, but I haven't heard back from him in a LONG time. Please contact that firm and let them know. Maybe we can get enough folks to where it's worth their time. There are thousands who've had this problem. VWs are JUNK!!!!!!!!

It's unfortunate VW isn't as reliable as they once were; but the answer is not a class action law suit. Do your homework, class action suits never really benefit the plaintiffs financially, but the lawyers involved benefit substantially. Class action is the lazy persons way because all you have to do is sign maybe a couple forms and your in. Do it yourself, with enough numbers suiing individually, VW will respond.
As to wtknght1's comment that timing belts should never break, much less at 100k miles, many car manufacturers recommend a timing belt be changed around 60k |

2001 VW Golf - 65,500 miles
- headlights oxidized immediately after 3 year warranty ended - window regulators replaced - 02 sensor failed - TRANSMISSION failed! - temperature sensor failed - mass air flow sensor failed - instrument cluster + more related to smog check failure/smog repair but I forget them all... oh, and the plastic key 'ring' breaking. don't get me started about the hundreds it would cost just to be able to have a functional ring on my car key. VW? Evil! I would never purchase another. My neighbors all know it. My friends all know it. And when strangers ask how I like my car, I tell them, don't buy a volkswagen. Light flickering or turning off... engine light comes on... and car turns off... on the highway, middle of the road, whatever. It 's exhausting and dangerous. I imagine the sensors are made out of Mexican cellophane... |
