Just maby he is to stupid to understand he put it down on his application to get the job, then refused to do it. In the hiring process he used it to his advantage to get the job. Can't have it both ways Mr. Walton. Find another job where you can pick and choose when and who you want to help.

Stupid posters should understand that simply because a person may be a fluent secondary language conversationalist they are in no manner necessarily a qualified translator for legal purposes.

I two languages beyond my native tongue (American English) but I would never, ever, place myself in the position of a being translator for any official purpose (beyond emergency assistance or casual banter with friends.)

First I don't think Puerto Rican is a race, second I suspect that there are some people with a Puerto Rican heritage who don't speak Spanish.

If he had a brain he would have done the translation then filed a complaint.

Spanish is not a race its an ethnicity. You can simply do a job you were hired to do but want compensation because of it is rediculous. Refusing when on probation means your stupid.

To the agency; why translate the statement, it should be left in the speakers native writing and not translated. If it goes to court they can request an interpretor. If the officer needed more he should have brought someone to the scene for speaking translation only. Thanks for hiring some diversity no need to compensate everyone for being diverse.

You are missing the point here. People in this city got paid extra if they could translate. They tested for this position, had a long list of people that got compensated to do this and were certified by the city to do it. Why force someone to do this if they didn't feel confidant enough to even get certified. Does that mean if someone can fix boats you are able to order them to fix the boat and if they don't they get fired?

I agree you can't force someone to do something just because you want him to because he is spanish. This guy never got paid to translate and others did. Why not call someone who was paid to do it?

Deserves to be fired. If I refuse to do what my sgt. asks, I would expect to be fired as well (especially while on probation, especially if I put on my application that I could perform that task). Better course of action would be to translate and then point out that you have been translating and would like to go through whatever process to be certified and paid (if that's what the city does).

GETTING PAID HIS SALARY IS NOT BEING COMPENSATED?? He wanted MORE money?? So, it isn't about being qualified, he just wanted MORE tax payer money over and above his salary. Just say NO!

Star1, I don't think they want to get the point! It seems as though they just want to bash Puerto Ricans or hispanics in General. If he didn't feel comfortable translating and he stated that then they should have contacted someone else. I'm sure there was someone else they could have used. Who did they use before he got there? All of these posters on here are just ignorant and just want to get a rise out of people when they make those ignorant statements. "ENGLISH ONLY LAW" Give me a break!

I don't blame this guy one bit. I wouldn't open myself up to the liability of translating either, unless I was being paid fairly for it. My money is on the guy getting a payout from this. This is also an argument for making English the offical language of our country.

What a putz....he stated on his application that he could read, write and speak Spanish - the order was not based on his race but on his past performance (of translating) and his claimed abilities.

But he'll hit the litigation lottery - wait and see.

I believe that police officers are immine from civil liability provided that they are acting in good faith while doing their job. Therefore, the notion that he could be sued personally if he mistranslated is wrong, as I see it. A more likely scenario is that he wanted money to do it. If so, why didn't he just go get himself certified?

What are you talking about...he demanded that they hire and pay someone properly for the work.

The police chief should be fired for asking him to perform work that is normally done by a certified person. Kudos to the officer for no being a kiss butt! The chief should have encouragedd him to get certified, this guy wants to be a cop not a pencil pusher. The cop taken off the street because he is sueful as a translator. Why not use someone that wants to do the job?

Will you translate this for me "yeah go jump in a lake" Hicks in Cassleberry are like why don't Spanish people act more like us. This guy wants to perform the normal duties of a cops just like his cohorts.

Them folks in Casselberry are funky people

They can't get anything done right, hence the funny strip mall in the middle of their little town center there. Slack regulation and corrpution lead to all those nice strip malls and gamblings joints.

When I lived there this lady that was on the city councils was begging to put her sign in my yard. This was when they were trying to close down Rachael. She referred to it as Interrnational Entertainment. They think it's a mini Los Vegas. Everybody wants to be a part of showbiz...go figure.

Real old school instead of building municipal building in a centralized area, they put it on a major trucking route closest to the big city Sanford. This way they would be closer to the county seat. The intersection 17-92 a cash cow in the 70's running around drunks from all the topless bar. A cop from that era would be like “those were the days”
