Why in the world does the Republicans want to privatize the US Post Office - and get rid of over 120,000 postal employees, when we already have so many unemployed people?

The US Post Office costs the US tax payer $0.00 to operate. They are completely self-supporting.

As a matter of fact, the reason the Post Office is financially strapped right now - is because of a law passed by the lame-duck Republican congress in 2006.

That law decreed that the US Post Office must pay over 5 billion dollars a year to the government to cover the cost of benefits for Postal workers for many years inadvance.

If the Republicans get their way, and privatize the Post Office, many small towns and communities will see their post offices shut down - causing untold hardship to many Americans.

This is just another example of the incredibly idiotic mentality of the Republican party.

Reply to "govt let down":

No, the US Postal Service is not asking for a GOVT.
BAILOUT!!!

Far from it! They are simply asking for the over-paid funds they paid to the the Federal government be returned to the US Post Office where they belong.

These over paid funds (which are bankrupting the US Postal Services) is the result of a law Republicans passed before they became lame duck status ON Jan 4, 2007.

This bill, introduced by Republican Tom Davis (R.VA) was the POSTAL ACCOUNTABILITY ACT which was passed by Congress on Dec 9,2006 and signed into law by Bush on Dec 20, 2006.

This bill mandated that the US Postal Service pre-fund 75 years of future health benefits within a 10 year span to the tune of 5.5 billion a year -covering current & future employees.

There is already $43 billion in this fund that will cover the next 20 years.

No other federal agencies or private-sector companies have pre-funding mandates.

There have been studies done as to the financial stability of the US Postal Service, and they found that the USPS has been over-paying it's obligation to the fund by $50 billion to $75 billion; therefore, the US Postal Service is not broke, as reported by the media & other unreliable sources.

Spoken like a typical clueless Republican!

You can show them the truth in black & white - and even spell it out so a child could understand, and a Republican will still disagree with you.

I believe a Republican would even disagree with the Good Lord, himself...

To 'privatize' the Postal Service would be to 1) stop voting in states which have predominately 'mail in' their votes is predominately being pinpointed towards RURAL American. These rural community people have usually ahve been always Democratic rather than Republican. When no mail is delivered, how would one get their vote to vote and then, back to the governmental area in such states such as Oregon and Washington state? Where would one go to send in that ballot, how far would one have to drive to get one's ballot's delivered to be counted. This is an assault on the Democratic vote by the Republican...if everything is privatized and the Republican party can cut off rural democratic votes who live far from the usual larger communities and this won't only curtail the usual democratic vote, which farmers have usually chosen to vote as, it would also 2)have have greatly isolated many Americans. No newspapers will be dellivered of any type...think about this. Total isolation! The Republicans want to privatize everything so they and their corporate affilations can keep the democratic vote down and thus, keep with their corporate alligances with their corporate agendas. Do you have a better idea now why the Republicans want this 235 yr old institution privatized? You know, the Republicans are CONSISTANT with everything they want and how they are going to do this. If we bicker among ourselves, that will make their job easier. The comment about MSNBC and Maddow I'd like to say in contrast with Fox News which both have their slant. Slants are important, but if one doesn't look through to the other view offered, the end product for your country is going to be right there where the corporations wants us as a nation, with them as kings and we, the majority, being their bidders, of which I chose not to cooperate with doing. Some of you need to stop, look and listen and broaden you view on to what's really happening. The Republicans like this bickering. Infact anytime someone comes out with something is correct for the country in general, that's when the lashing comes out the loudest. Those of different party affiliation have to stop arguing with your fellow Americans, which shows how far 'the divide has taken place', WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT IS THE Corporate Republican STRATEGY TO TAKE CONTROLL without us knowning. Wake up and smell the roses and work together to defeat those of corporate allegiance and their bosses. Those of another view on life aren't the enemy.

I. Think every unemployed American should be given a job with the Post Office. Pay them $80,000 a year with full medical and retirement.
Unionize them all so they can never be fired.

This would end unemployment, stimulate the economy, boost the housing market and put all democrats back to work. The democratic party would then be an unstoppable powerhouse political party.

Never mind the fact that the Post Office is going the way of the pony express. Backword thinking from the likes of alum-61 are why America is 17,000,000,000,000 in debt.

Just keep hanging onto your GOP ideology, Comrade. Because if Republicans were to be left (unrestrained) to run this country - in a few we would no longer be a democracy!!!

If the US Postal Service were privatized - Caruthersville residents would have to drive to Kennett or maybe even Poplar Bluff to pick up their mail. Because, C'ville's Post Office would surely be one of the first to be closed.

Yes, privatization would cause Fed Ex, UPS or any privately owned mail company to cherry-pick - bypassing service to small towns & communities in favor of the more lucrative bigger cities.

Is this really what you want? You better be very careful what you wish for...

Tell me Comrade, if the US Postal Service costs the US taxpayer $0.00 - and they are completly self-supporting, why are you so strongly in favor of the fact that they are unionized?

If the US Postal Service is paying their way and providing a living wage for their employees - what business is that of yours how they run their business? Could it be that you're jealous because some of those Postal employees make more money than you do?

It's sounds like the Postal Service is running their business a whole lot better than our Federal Government has run this country over the last 10 years. People like you and the Federal Government needs stay out of it and let the US Postal Service manage their own business.

Did it not register to you that our US Government actually owes the US Postal Service billions of dollars for over-payment of pre-paid employee retirement benefits?

Why should any company private or government be required to pre-pay 75 years of benefits for their employees & future employees?

Let me also say that UPS and FedEx haved done just fine especially when they have to pick up the slack that the USPS can't or won't.....and they do it more effeciently. What was the question? Postal service go private?....yeah i think so

You better do some research before the next time you come on Topix and make a complete fool of yourself!

YES, THE US POSTAL SERVICE IS COMPLETELY SELF-SUPPORTING!!!

Yes, the US Postal Service is in a financial bind right now.

This financial bind is caused by the Postal Accountability Enhancement Act which forces the US Postal Service to pay 5.5 billion dollars a year to the US Goverment!

This Republican Postal Accountability Enhancement Act was passed and signed into law by George Bush in 2006, just before his duck status in Jan of 2007.

This Postal Accountability Enhancement Act forces the Postal Service to pre-pay 75 years of retirement benefits to current postal workers and future postal workers.

No other company (private sector or government) in history has had to pre-pay such an enormous amount. The Postal Service has over-paid the government billions of dollars.

If the US government would just return this money to the US Postal Service, they would no longer be in a financial bind.

What has taxing e-mails got to do with the US Postal Service???

Oh, I'm sure UPS & FedEx are doing just great!

Any company would do great if they cherry-picked and bypassed the smaller towns and communities like UPS & FedEx does. Yes, UPS & FedEx are doing just great raking in the big bucks in those larger cities.

But, just where does that leave the small towns where people have to drive 20-40 miles to even find a UPS or FedEX office??? How much of a hardship does this put on people in an already tight economy considering the high cost of transportation & gas?

Was just thinking......When was the last time you heard a news story about finding FED EX or UPS packages in the trash? That is what business is all about. Being able to do something better and cheaper than the competition. The USPS is just another example that throwing money at a government entity to prop it up and make it look successful, in the end fails. It is just a shame that when it fails, it costs the tax payers so much money.

That is not true. You can order stamps by mail and if you have packages you can schedule a pickup. There are many little towns that dont even have a grocery store. Most dont have a pharmacy. The days of a post office in every little town have become obsolete. If you dont like the idea of ordering stamps by mail, then combine it when you go to town. You have to go to town to get groceries, medicine, etc just buy the stamps when you do that. Most grocery stores sell stamps and if the post office is closed you can bet most of the stores will carry them. Some people just want to bitch. I believe a company like FED EX could take over the postal system and actually make it profitable. Lets face it, the government cannot even buy muffins for less than $16.00 a piece, how can they deliver mail at a profit.
