Yep your right but the public will vote the same cause they all don't think about EMS - Police - Fire until they need it and then it's to late.

The Sheriff's Office is a highly respected office in the vast majority of our country. There is a great history behind the Sheriff. Within Tennessee, the county Sheriff is a VERY POWERFUL man. This office should be treated like a fortune 500 company. The Sheriff is not only the HEAD law enforcement agent in the ENTIRE county (yes even can override the City and State Troopers), but he is a diplomat to surrounding cities, counties, and states.
This office is not a playground or joke. People want to trust the Sheriff. They want the opportunity to speak with the "High Sheriff" and they want to be treated with respect as well. The Sheriff has multiple responsibilities and can destroy a county or make it the best place in the state to reside. It is all up to him. Don't just vote for a "good ole boy" because he is nice or popular. Make an educated decision. This is a lot of responsibility for one man. From the sound of it, you guys have been lucky so far. Next time, educate yourself. It could cost you more ways than one in the end.

Accountability, respondsibilty and interigity without these you only will continue to fail. I could go on and on....but 2010 will tell.

Amen Joe. The ENTIRE Smith County Government needs to be cleaned out and worked over. I hope the taxpayers of your county realize this. If not, You Guys are going to be in a world of hurt! No offense to anyone, but times are hard. Taxpayers cant continue to foot the bill. You need to start at the top and work our way down. Keep changing hands until you find one that works.

Me thinks that most of the people having this discussion is only 2 people - someone who lost in the sheriff's race & a current employee. Look both of you - the nastiness does help anybody out.

Everyone knows the election, and most of them around here, always "looks" a little shady. Probably always will, the same people with money today will probably be the same people with money tomorrow. Nuff said.

Past that point - there have been several questionable items by every department in Sm Co. including the S.O.

You can't deny the overkill in multiple car responses to the slightest accident, the excessive speeding and other non-necessary traffic violations (blowing thru 4 way stop signs responding to non-injury accidents, etc...- I've seen THP cars responding to the same calls properly roll to a stop and the intersection and SC S.O. blow right through them).

Whether there is intentional "offenses" going on the dept or not, perception is a huge, huge factor. And don't deceive yourself, approval is not as high as you'd like to believe. But, with small town politics, most voters are smart enough not to spread their view and just attempt to do it in the voting booth, but like I said, we know that even that number can change........

As far as the local media, it's a small town. You take what's handed to you as a story. You don't do a lot of dirt diggin' in a town like this, or you won't be around long. You cover your sports and whatever else falls in your lap. I see a lot of papers in this neck of the woods and that's just what they do.

Will things ever change? Probably not, just the names. Am I running for office? Are you nuts, you think I want my life picked apart & second guessed.

We just get along the best we can and try to play CYA.
