I moved from Brooklyn, NY To Merridian Terrace in Carteret in December 2008. I did not live here for 60 days before my home was broken into and thousands of dollars worth of jewelry stolen. I have never had a burglary living in NY and moved here for a safer, quieter environment. I did and do believe the town is, as they say, up and coming and despite this break in I still do like this town. The police responded to this incident in a way that would not have happened in NY. Of course, nothing was recovered but I still felt that they took this crime seriously. I think it's important to add that two days before the break in I'd received a recorderd Public Service announcement call on my home phone advising the residents of this town to take precautions and report suspicious activity. I thought this was quaint until my home was broken into. The police acknowledged an increase in crime in the neighborhood and I unfortunately claim the distinction of being the first to be robbed in this "luxury apartment" complex but I am still hopeful about my choice to live here. I certainly hope that the Mayor isn't covering this up but can see how increased crime could negatively impact revitalization efforts. I will reassess my opinion of the town in a few months but have not given up on it yet.
