So many parents abdicate their responsibilities and,in doing so, pay no attrention to how their kids dress when they go to school. Providing a quality education and keeping a classroom under control is hard enough in the best of circumstances. I don't know how anyone could throw an uncontrolled fit to ideas to make the education experience better.

I don't think it is right the school board is making my kids wear clothing they don't like. Nobody is telling them what to wear. I have seen a lot of cleavage in some of the clothing some of the teachers are wearing! What about them? Especially bad when we have had 2 teachers in Beckham county convicted of sexually related crimes. My children are not the ones who are not dressing appropriately, yet they are being punished. I say if a kid shows up inappropriately dressed- SEND THEM HOME- EXPELL THEM, WHATEVER, but don't punish my kids. I also think it won't change kids- you will still have kids with spiked colored hair, nose piercings, etc. THIS IS NOT THE ANSWER. My kids dress very nicely and maybe it does set them apart, having to wear uniforms won't change anything. They will tear that stuff off the minute they get home. Go anywhere in town, it doesn't matter if they are school kids or 60 years old- people just dress differently. From Cowboys in chaps & hats to Bikers in leather- it is a part of who you are and the school is trying to strip that away from not only the offenders but every kid in school. What if the government decided there was too much crime in the nation- so they just locked up everyone??? Basically that is what you are doing. Taking away my kids freedom of choice. They should be ashamed.

"No Uniforms" has pretty well made the case for why uniforms are needed. Yes, the teachers should have to dress appropriately, too. Wearing uniforms is not punishing kids. It is teaching them to respect themselves and others in the way they present themselves. If they don't do that in the real world, they will be the ones paying the price. You would be doing your kids a favor by requiring them to wear uniforms to school.

Can anyone tell me what the uniforms are supposed to look like? Khakis and polo shirts? Tshirts and jeans? Does anyone know?

It is not teaching them nothing but "follow the leader"...The clothes that children wear lets them express who they are as individuals. This isn't military school or a private school! It is a public school! Alot of people say America is free and all that? What has happened to that now days? The only favor I did my kids was moving them to a different better school!

Quality of education should be the reason for choosing a school. Teaching your kids to run away instead of follow society's rules is storing up trouble for your kids in their futures. But this is America, and that is certainly your right.

I am teaching my kids to stand up and fight for themselves. My kids do respect themselves and it shows by how nicely they are dressed everyday. I will not be doing my kids a favor by making them dress in drab colors and blend in with everyone else- I want them to feel proud about how they present themselves and I like the fact they get up early every morning to dress up and look nice to stand out. They will now have to buy clothes they don't want to wear- WAIST OF MONEY! And now they will have to work even harder to stand out- These kids aren't going to wear these uniforms when they go to town an hour afterr school or on Saturdays. How can dressing them in cookie cutter clothes from 8-3 change anything????

Your posting makes the case for the fact that your children need more help than you have the ability to give them. Learning to make an appropriate appearance would be a good start.

You know,I feel that if my children stay up half the night upset about the uniforms, that`s punishment. It has happened and I`m not thrilled about my children being upset or feeling punished. A lot of children in this town are upset or worrying about these stupid uniforms and I want you to explain to me and the whole community how upsetting our children is doing them a favor.I grew up without a uniform and almost everyone that I went to school with turned out to be a very respectful adult. There are a few that did not, but I really do not think that had they worn a uniform to school they would have turned out any different. It`s called having a choice on who you are and how you act. It`s not the uniforms that make a person,it is their upbringing, the parents and how well the parents raise their children and the values they instill.A lot of the problem with our children now days is that everything costs so much that unless you are a doctor, lawyer,or have recently won the lotto a family has to have 2 working parents to even make it.The parents aren`t able to be home with their kids to teach them exactly what they need to be taught and daycares aren`t going to do it.It`s hard when both parents work 40 - 50 hours a week.Uniforms are not going to teach these kids to be respectful adults either.

I understand your point. It is very hard for lots of families in this area to do all they need to do. But it's important for kids to learn that their appearance counts, no matter how unfair that is. They are judged by it, no matter how unfair that is. It's important for kids to learn to show respect for others, no matter if it is inconvenient. Absolutely, that should all apply to teachers also.

Uniforms are dumb. Kids are kids and a unform wont change anything. Good kids will follow the rules and bad kids will find ways around them. Gang bangers will wear their shirts inside out or do something to distinguish themselves apart from others. Rich kids will wear more jewelry and poor kids will have dirty and torn uniforms over time. We try and blame the problems at our schools on everything but what it is.... the kids. Now I'm the first to agree that the parents are in many cases just as much to blame, after all it's hard to have a good attitude if dad is beating the heck out of mom each night or mom is smoking dope in the living room each afternoon. Kids in school today cuss at their teachers and walk out of class with little or no responce from the school. WHY?, well we are all afraid of law suits and not being politically correct. In reality the schools aren't designed for to handle these problems and dont want to acknowledge them for fear of bad PR. Until we kick out the trouble makers and bring back the three foot paddle we will continue having these problems. Question: Who runs a prison? Answer: Inmates Question: Who runs a school? Answer: students Do you not see this as a problem? No? Then your part of the problem. Yes? Then stop complaining and let the teachers bust your kids but when they act up.
