New developments don't always fulfill promise of creating new jobs

Millions in taxpayer dollars spent.

Thousands of new jobs promised.

But as Channel 4 Action News' Paul Van Osdol found out, they don't always add up to a successful equation.

Dennis Davin, Allegheny County's economic development director, acknowledged the shortfall, but told Van Osdol, "We think we're going to get there."

The county also has high hopes for an old steel mill site in McKeesport, where $2 million were spent cleaning it up.

But four years later, nothing's there.

To get to the location, drivers have to travel down a narrow brick-lined street, go under an old bridge and across railroad tracks.

"It is accessible. It's accessible right now," said Davin.

One man told Van Osdol the property is hard to find. "There's only one way in. That's probably the biggest problem," he said.

Allegheny Institute's Eric Montarti said public officials need to do more homework before spending millions of taxpayer dollars on development projects.

"If the promises aren't fulfilled once the announcement of the project is made, there's really nothing that can be done," said Montarti.

Solobay has since filed legislation to force companies to keep promises made when they accept taxpayer money for jobs.

Maglev Kaput: Death of a boondoggle

The meager assets of Maglev Inc. are scheduled to be sold at auction next month. And with it, yet another embarrassing chapter in American mass-transit boondoggles will be closed.

The company that proposed building a $5.3 billion high-speed magnetic-levitation train between Pittsburgh International Airport and Greensburg filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization last summer. Suddenly, on Monday, word came from an industrial auctioneer that Maglev Inc. was Maglev Kaput.

And with it, millions of dollars in public subsidies are confirmed to have been flushed down a rathole. All due derision goes to the same crowd that usually scurries like rats when such predictable failures go belly up.

Think of Congressmen Tim Murphy, Jason Altmire and Mike Doyle. Think of former U.S. Sens. Rick Santorum and Arlen Specter and Sen. Bobby Casey. And who can forget one of the ringleaders of this rat pack, former Gov. Ed Rendell.

Every one of these cheerleaders supported Maglev Inc.'s pie-in-the-sky joke. And had it actually been built, you can bet the Pittsburgh International-to-Greensburg line, after sucking up billions of dollars in public subsidies, would have required some of the largest per-trip passenger subsidies in the history of U.S. mass transit.

Funny, but we're not hearing much this week from the cheerleaders, are we?

Failed Maglev across a failed fly over ramp. The government wasted money on McKeesport PA. All from government national tax payer dollars. Everyone loses to District 45 and Brewster.

The joke furthers by the money spent to get to the newly failed Maglev!

With planning and engineering costs, the project totaled approximately $10.9 million. The cost of construction was approximately $5.75 million. It was funded in part by federal transportation funds and stimulus funds that were distributed on the state level.
