Why isn't the hospital accredited by the Joint Commission? See the list of accredited hospitals (within 150 miles from 78834)at this web site. If Community Hospital at Dilley can do it why can't we?

We need to hold the hospital accountable for providing for the community's needs. Getting them to undergo the certification process and meeting the requirements can help make that happen.
This is an issue that needs to be looked at by the hospital's administration.

I was hoping to hear some comments from the Hospital Board or the administrator as to why our hospital isn't JCAHO Certified but maybe they don't read TOPIX. Good for them! Although TOPIX occasionally has some good information most of it is just gossip and libel. Unfortunately it isn't being used for much newsworthy information so we are forced to rely on 2 small town newspapers. Why aren't they asking? Who are their advertisers? It's not a conspiracy, it's just business. All I'm saying is if we really want a good hospital and apparently we do because we're paying for it then we should demand that it be certified.

Or did you all think he was really pushing people to vote for the community hospital shit because he really cares? Yeah right, it was because he gets a huge salary increase along with it, if you dont beleive me ask the board members, its all public information....

Hospitals do not have to be accredited by JCAHO to operate-the accreditation process is entirely voluntary. Accreditation by the Joint Commission means that a hospital meets at least minimum standards of quality. JCAHO rates hospitals in 28 different performance areas, including assessment of patients, medication use, operative procedures, patient rights, staff, laboratory and emergency services, infection control and social services.

Of the hospitals accredited by JCAHO, 90 percent have Accreditation with Recommendations for Improvement, meaning the hospital generally meets the standards, but does not meet certain important standards in at least one important area. In order to remain accredited they must meet the identified standards within a specified period of time. Four percent have Full Accreditation, which indicates that the hospital meets the Joint Commission's standards in all performance areas. Another four percent receive JCHAO's highest level, Accreditation with Commendation, awarded to hospitals that demonstrate exemplary performance overall. Conditional Accreditation, which means the hospital is performing only marginally and must correct the problem areas within a specified period of time, is given to one percent of the hospitals. Less than one percent of the hospitals are Denied Accreditation because they do not meet the Joint Commission's standards.

Good information, shouldn't our hospital want to have an outside agency inspect it? I mean if they want to improve.

It should be investigated and inspected. The doors would be shut. It's not a hospital its a TRIAGE faclity. All they can do is put a bandaid on your boo boo and send you home. Otherwise they wipe their hands by sending you to SA. It doesn't have all the departments a hospital should have. If it did cancer patients would be relieved from the pain and the traveling to SA. But then again its our fault for not being strong enough to speak up. We all know the famous CARRIZO response "We'll look into it".

We spoke up when we agreed to a Hospital Taxing District. Now they have no excuse for not providing adequate service.

I just want to ensure a hospital that is used by me and mine is doing the best job possible. Getting it accreditted and inspected on a regular basis will help that happen.

All hospitals are inspected by law every 3 years
by State Medicaid/Medicare inspectors in order to
stay certified and accredited.
So you can choose Joint Accredited or State Medicaid/Medicare accredited.
Like everything in life, you take a chance no
matter what hospital or doctor you choose.
Best thing is to take care of yourself and your
love ones with simple common sense.

Dilley Hosp. and Carrizo Nursing Home both have Joint Comm. cert. and they would also need to get any Medicaid/Medicare inspections you speak of. Given a choice I would not go to the Carrizo Hosp.(only for an emergency).

"Wisdom and knowledge are only gained by those who seek it. We do not always see our own weaknesses."
The hospital board should want the hospital to be JCAHO certified so they could know if the staff is doing it's job. The staff should want the hospital to be certified so it is given the tools to do it's job. The community should want the hospital certified so it can be taken care of properly.
