The church situation in Germany is more complicated than the article suggests. The Evangelical Church (EKD) is not a denomination in the American sense, but a federation of 22 independent denominations, 9 of which are confessionally Lutheran. There is also a small separate Lutheran denomination, the SELK, in fellowship with the Missouri Synod, as well as an association of 8 Lutheran denominations within the EKD.
