So, what happened to all that MAPS money for the schools? I thought MAPS was a success. If it was, where is all the money the schools were supposed to get? Someone really needs to investigate this entire situation before it gets even more out of hand.

Yes, it may be uncomfortable. But there wasn't always a/c and we all survived. I suggest getting oscillating fan (maybe 2 to a room) to keep the air flowing. It's a whole lot cheaper ran running the a/c. That's what I do at my house.

ACs are a luxury in most countries in the world. The reason they are a luxury is because of shortage of funds. Something similar is happening here. Cut the AC..save some $$.
A baseball field=essential for kids
ac=not essential.

I agree with you both, old timer and moller, but the issue to me, is the lack of funding, not that the kids are dealing with no heat or air. Our State rallies behind the MAPS for Kids projects and praises them non-stop. We have our taxes raised to help fund these so called money making adventures. However, where IS the money?? If its not in the schools where it was supposed to be.... then where did it go? If the schools are misusing the funds then that needs to be sniffed out and exposed as well.

Come on kids, toughen up. We have all become way too dependent on temperature being controlled to ultimate comfort. Being without an air conditioner in April is not even close to being a hardship.

This kids play outside at skateparks and Frontier City all summer long in 90+ degrees, so why is a classroom that is being kept at 80 such a big deal?

Why does not Darrow take a pay cut. The children should not have to suffer. Sports, Sports, that is all Oklahoma knows. No wonder we rank so low academically.

Maybe I missed something here. Does MAPS for Kids effect CARNEGIE? I think some people jump on here and start posting without reading the story.
But I agree, cut the AC. As one poster stated these kids get a lot hotter on the ball field or playing in the yard during the summer. And NO, I didn't have A/C in the classroom when I was in school. Heck when I was a kid all my Mom and Dad could afford at home was a water cooled window A/C. Suck it up kids. It's not the end of the world.

Has anyone asked to see the expenditure list for this or any other school? It is "public" information since tax dollars pay for it. It might be interesting to see just how much the Superintendent and the office personnel make. If it is way out of proportion to the "average" taxpayer in that town/county, perhaps a pay reduction is in order? When HB1017 passed, the majority of all that money went to pay the administration NOT the teachers. It would also be beneficial to parents to start attending the school board meetings to know first hand what is actually "going on" in/at/with their children's schools. It has been said that all that is needed for evil to prevail is for good men to NOTHING. If you're going to "gripe", you should "do" SOMETHING.

First off the MAPS project from what I understand is only for the Oklahoma City Metro area. Secondly parents are using any excuse for their children to misbehave. It states in this report one child said, "We sweat. You get the humid, sticky feeling and it makes you more mad." Maybe this child needs to worry less about the temperature in the class room and more about his grammar. These parents need to worry about losing teachers because of budget cuts and if turning the a/c off in April might help to prevent that they should support the school and tell their children to suck it up.

From what this report stated, the money used by the athletic department was donated, therefore, not the school's money to do with as they pleased. If a booster club raised the money, then they can spend it how they see fit. Usually booster clubs are separate from the schools legally. If the parents want to save the a/c, then create an A/c booster club and donate the money, like the athletic guys did.

I teach in Midwest City and I have to tell you I haven't had to turn on my ac once this year yet. I am doing my best to save the district money and opening the windows keeps it plenty cool in here for the kids.

Really...Don't complain about sports in some small communities that is the only way some of these kids will get into college even if they have a high GPA scholarships are hard to come by in small school districts.

Darrow is leaving. This is better than a pay cut. He is worthless. He has cost the school loads of money. They supply him with a house,(which was recently remodeled, by school employees) all utilities, and a brand new SUV to drive. All paid for with the money that could be used to help with the school's debt. As far as the athletics are concerned. The uniforms and such may be donated, but I am willing to bet that the 2 practice gyms for the basketball players weren't. Might want to look into that.

Teach the kids how to grow and harvest marijuana. They can sell it and keep it nice and cool in there.

I think that this is a stupid way to cut back on costs, but in defense, there are very few black people in town, and they are very great people. Hard working, and great citizens. Don't be saying racist things like that.

First off, LTz why are all your comments racists...are you that insecure about yourself that you have to bash someone else...counseling, go to it.
As far as this article, there is nothing wrong with not turning on the AC..not that hot yet anyway. Most of these kid parents didn't have AC when they were in school...and many don't have AC in their homes now!! The kids will survive.

Graguating from Carnegie I would no of the situation there. First off if you know Donny Darrow, you will know how awful he is at being a superintendant. While I was in school there where times the roads where icy and all other surrounding schools had snow days. Darrow presumed with the scheduled school day causing 2 school buses filled with children grades K-12 to crash. No injuries occurred nor where there any damage to either bus but still the fact remains. Well spring time comes and on a nice sunny day, school was called and a snow day was used. Where was Darrow onn this day? On the golf course plating all 18 holes is where he was at. This occurred many times while I was in school there at Carnegie. Another fact thats gone unspoken is prejudiceness. A junior boy that happens to be native american that played football since he was a freshman was due to start his junior year at the reigns of quarterback. However, a sophomore quarterback and also son to the High School counselor which happens to be great friends with Darrow have been seen dining together at local restaurants. Story goes that the son of the counselor takes the reign at starting quarterback. The native american however had to prove that he was better at the skilled position by stats at the end of the season. All in all, we cannot trust Darrow. Why not take all the suburbans that darrow has driven and sell them. All the gas prices that he has used to go on trips and own personal use. Cut his pay as well as certain sport activities.
