That must be nice. I wonder if the gov't is aware that works or if it is even allowed by the program.

I don't think its right to have the preconceived thoughts about people that have an ebt card. I myself fell on hard times and used one after losing my job. I found another job shortly after, so i was lucky. It's the governments fault for not having a better system to crack down on the lazy people that don't find jobs and have no desire to. They have to "cut the cord". These social programs are necessary so that families are not displaced or starving because of a hardship. I think reform is definitely needed because of many abusing the system. But you cannot put everyone in the same boat. Not all who get ebt are bad people because of bad apples.

I have seen the EBT card used at costco to buy an HDTV as well, there is a cash portion on the card. California doesn't care they love welfare recipients! They are number one on the nation for welfare cases and have more than the #2,#3,#4 and #5 states combined. We pay for it, but to crack down would be "insensitive to the needs of the poor"...they need HD too.

You do want those on welfare to be able to find a job helps if they can go out and look for one. Those on welfare are also required to work unless they have children under 6 while receiving benefits. So they work for local companies and need to get there. a mom of two gets roughly 800 a month in food stamps and cash assistance. For this she must work 128 hrs a month. This means employers are getting labor at well below minimum wage. Why not just hire the welfare receipient for at least minimum wage and save the tax payers money. Businesses like this arrangement it basically is almost free labor as they do not pay but a couple dollars per hour for the employee. Also there are cards for child support and unemployment which also have cash on them. so you may have seen one of those being used. Why judge you may one day be in that boat and need temporary help. Remember as well benefits are limited to a 5 year lifetime limit so there is no longer cradle to grave handouts.

Get your facts straight please people. What you are seeing are purchases made with TANF, it is a cash assistance program that rides on top of the food stamp part of the EBT card. Welfare abuse is nothing new and nothing to really be surprised by. I myself thoroughly enjoy seeing my tax dollars being spent in such a way. =)

Welfare reform is needed. Just one of the many problems in our country. With that being said, I believe these programs are essential in our society. For whatever reason the person may have fallen on hard times and i believe they should receive help. The government wants to blindly hand out money, people are going to take advantage. They need to regulate the system on a federal level and I think recipients should have to meet strict guidelines working, drug tests etc

Interesting since all government paid employees are subject to drug testing,...but if your just getting a government handout it does not matter.

Wow. You guys are all assholes. I get welfare. I am 24 yr old white single mother. The little bit of help I do get I have to attend 40hrs a week in work shops or be in school! My ex decided he wanted to cheat on me when I got pregnant and then he went to jail.. I never wanted this. I have had to live in shelters and struggle to keep my head afloat with no family and very buzy friends I have been on my own. The give me whopping 115 $$ a month in cash assistance and u can only buy a few things.. They are picky.. And 300$ a month in food stamps. And I have to go through holy hell every few months to update them on all the same things....proof residency, proof lack of of income, shot records, and they want interviews where u have to call them and good luck getting through it took me 4 & 1/2 hours last week ..... You guys need to rethink your hearts and be understang of the system if it wasnt for this help id be in even worse struggle it helps but its def not something I can live off of....

here's the kicker after New Mexico Hydraulics shut down KNOWN drug dealer Eddie Villa's wife Tooter(Delores) applied and got cash assistance, medicaid and food stamps (EBT) and bragged about it all free medical and dental they were gonna get all the while getting thousands a day from selling drugs...SHE'S SHAMELESS. There are families who really need the help then there's those who are generational moochers that have only known that kinda life and see nothing wrong with it.
