Muslims in Carbondale/Southern IL

I heard there's a big population of Muslims in Southern IL and there's two mosques in Carbondale, IL so I'm just curious. How often do you see a muslim in Carbondale?

yes therre are quite a few they are sufi's . there like hippie kinda muslims

Yeah, they are pretty common around here. We have a very eclectic(I think that's how you spell it) campus.

Huh never heard of sufi's before. Is it a branch off type of thing?

So I'm guessing the population is pretty much within the campus areas and Carbonale? Are they common in Murphysboro and Marion?

I was very surprised to see that Carbondale had two moques because I had heard of alot of interolance and what not in S IL...

carbondale is deffinutly the liberal area of southern illinois . the sufi's also own longbranch which is in carbondale . its like a organic foods smoothies place realy good . no meat though . marion is a bible thumping town . there not to tolerant over there

Most terrorists are Muslims but not all Muslims are terrorists. They're ok in cdale not too many of em and I have some Muslim friends. If they were the majority they might impose their religion on us or cut our heads off if we don't comply but it will be fine for many more years here. It's all good.

Islam isn't about imposing my beliefs on another person. It's actually quite the opposite, if you read the Quran. We're taught that you can't "make" another person believe what you believe. The best way is to let them believe what they will. In other words, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink..same kinda thing. True Islam is about peace. It's scary to say that in many countries, people are being tortured and killed for not doing as others of power wish for them to do. It's a really horrible injustice. Thank God for the U.S.:)

I agree with Gibson53. we should educate ourselves and stay updated on current issues. We do not need the government taking part in all aspects of our lives. Unemployment has been higher than I have ever seen it, economy is bad and getting worse, we are lied to by our leaders and we accept it as OK. Lying to the public is more prevalent than it use to be. We all need to think for ourselves, read, listen, and watch different media sources then make our own opinion of the issues. Big government is bad!!!

Actually I'm not a liberal , I don't label myself . I have some true con values but nobody on the right seems to agree with government staying out of our lives . How come republicans are always gun ho about puting people in jail for non violent drug crimes , last time I checked smaller govt would mean them staying out of our buisness our respecting states rights . How come when bush was president his whole team of dea heads and drug czars didn't respect california voters who voted med marijuana legal in 1995 . No they just terorized them with raids , stealing there medicin , ect... I thought the right was about smaller federal govt and more about states rights. Although obama also hasn't lived up to what he said about dea radids on medical marijuana users/dispencerys , he has stepped it down a lot compared to all the neo cons of bush's term.

If only people could be a bit more tolerant of others than maybe they wouldn't use "childish" terms to refer to items or ideas they know absolutely nothing about. Those "towels" refered to by oloo are nothing but mere coverings for modesty. Muslim women choose to cover their bodies in public rather than "strut their stuff" just like one wouldn't openly show off a valuable gem openly in public, muslim women are also given that high value.
Also, Islam IS NOT A RELIGION ABOUT BLOWING UP STUFF. For the love of God, GET EDUCATED and learn that actually in the quran it states that leading to the death of just 1 person is so evil that it is equivalent to hurting all humanity! I'm a christian & my spouse is Muslim. Even during my work at SIU I ran into rude jokes & emails being sent to me. My spouse has his undergrad, masters, & phd. I'm also America. Muslims & Suffis aren't the same. Also to assume Muslims are terrorists is also wrong. If they were a truly religious Muslim they would not committ an act of terrorism. My spouse is brillant his family taught him about all religions & honestly just because we may not have exactly the same beliefs why didn't we learn more about all religions. There are Muslims that are more strict than others. They have the Koran memorized & if you have seen the English version you would recognize many of the stories or prophets that were spoke of. I enjoy having a person in my life with so much knowledge but doesn't say I have to become Muslim. He is willing to go to my church. He prayers more than anyone I ever met that's not a bad thing. He teaches what he has learned from SIU to others. He's loving, caring, intelligent, a caregiver, best friend & I hope that one day he can feel more comfortable in the US. I've met others just like him is learning over seven languages a bad thing? They are taught that high school is not a celebration & there is no graduation that you must attend college & it was provided to him at no cost in his hometown. Also he is extremely kind, gentle & patient. He's from Africa but labeled as white here he feels uncomfortable like many others having to figure out what his race is for SIU. I just feel bad for many Muslims that are not appreciated especially when they believe in god. Well I'm proud of him and I hope more people take a stand and not allow ignorant people to insult Muslims even if by saying simply it's not true. You never hear in the news recently this person killed someone in the US because they were athiest, Jewish, catholic, Christian, Scientology.......that we should now look down and make crazy accusations or stare at someone because they are middle eastern. I thought that we are supposed to be all the same regardless of our religion, country, or sex we are human
beings. He's not here living off of the government and he'd prefer to go back home but he's here for his students education & for me. His family members are an asset to society they are doctors, economists, & professors. Just consider educating yourself before you assume Muslims are terrorists, wife beaters, don't believe in god, etc. May peace be with you always :) know that there are many good people in this world that go unnoticed.
