I don't understand this myself seeing as smoking people create revenue for the hospital. To me this is prejudice. Smoking is an addiction and the number 2 killer in the USA. If you are going to say that you can't smoke and work here then you also can't have high blood pressure and work here or a history of heart problems. If they don't smoke near patients and don't stink of smoke then leave them be. Come on southeast is banning the electric cigarette too. It is harmless to others and as long as it is used in a non public place who the hell cares. It is just another way to take liberty and freedom away from the everyday man.

The reason for SFMC not hiring smokers is simple. Employees that are smokers cost the hospital a lot of money each year. Smokers are more likely to get sick and call in more often. They are also more than likely to develop other health problems. Not saying all smokers get sick yearly or call in but a lot do If you smoke and you don't get sick or have breathing problems now - just wait you will. And if you work you will cost your employer time and money someday. They also have a program called healthy choices for employees to get healthier. Gives them an incentive on their insurance. They are not all bad ideas. If you were an employer wouldn't you want your employees to be healthily so they could do their very best job they can? And if you are not a smoker you can smell a smoker the minute they walk into the room. Perfume or body spray cannot cover that up. Trust me!!!

TOWSON, Md.—Three top executives at 332-bed St. Joseph Medical Center resigned as the hospital continues to cooperate with a federal investigation into the financial relationship between the hospital and an unnamed physician group. Beth O’Brien was made interim president and CEO of the hospital effective May 8, hospital spokeswoman Vivienne Stearns-Elliott said. O’Brien has been the acting administrative head of the hospital since Feb. 26 (May 11, p. 17). O’Brien is a senior vice president with St. Joseph’s corporate parent, Catholic Health Initiatives. Stearns-Elliott would not comment on a May 9 report in the Baltimore Sun that the three executives who resigned were CEO John Tolmie, Chief Operating Officer Sylvia “Sly” Moore and Vice President of Operations Lucy Shamash. The hospital has said previously that three unidentified executives were placed on indefinite administrative leave to avoid conflicts of interest with the ongoing investigation into the hospital’s financial relationship with a physician group. A spokeswoman with the U.S. attorney’s office in Baltimore said no information on the criminal investigation at St. Joseph has been released. A St. Joseph cardiology practice, Midatlantic Cardiovascular Associates, has been beset by civil litigation alleging violations of the Stark law. I don't think they are laying off. But I know when someone quit's or retire's (not by choice) I think the one's that retire are asked to leave. Anyway's they are not replacing them. I really don't think names should be posted on here.

And its also our choice as Americans. You see, here in America, we have some personal freedoms. Yes I do agree smoking is harmful to the smokers and other people. But there are some of use who do respect other people. I don't smoke in restaurants, if we are in a outside public place I go off in the distance and light one up. And I hope they start taxing those snack cakes you are probably sitting there cramming down your throat into the ground you judgemental b*itch.

It's great SFMC won't hire tobacco smokers. Now if both hospitals would actually do drug screens on their employees maybe they would truly get somewhere. who wants a stoned person giving your mother drugs?

Actually, I'M one of them, but I really would feel awkward posting my name. They (HR) suggested that I apply for another job at in the organization, but most of the openings were nursing positions, and I'm not a nurse. As for the other openings, currently there's no good match for my education and job skills so I'm looking elsewhere. I'm sure I'll find something better out there.
