The FLDS are following in the footsteps of the mormon church founder, Joseph Smith. Smith 'married' at least 33 women. 1/3 of whom were already married and remained married to their legal, living husbands.
1/3 of Smith's 'wives' were teenagers. His first teenage 'wife' was Emma Smith's sixteen year old housmaid, Fanny Alger. His youngest 'bride' was 14 year old Helen Mar Kimball. He approached her promising to guarantee her salvation and the salvation of her entire family giving her 24 hours to decide. IOW, he made a young girl responsible for the eternal fate of everyone she loved. Helen later confided in a friend that had she known the marriage would be more than symbolic she would not have agreed. But she had been deceived. How is that different Warren Jeffs and his ilk? Joseph Smith’s teen wives: Fanny Alger 16 Sarah Ann Whitney 17 Lucy Walker 17 Flora Ann Woodworth 16 Emily Dow Partridge 19 Sarah Lawrence 17 Maria Lawrence 19 Helen Mar Kimball 14 Melissa Lott 19 Nancy M. Winchester [14?] |

Thanks for the info. You would hope people would have evolved since then, but it's the same. They worship the same "prophets" starting with Joseph Smith.

Don't be decieved into thinking marrying teenagers was frowned upon in the 19th century. http://en.fairmormon.org/Joseph_Smith%27s_mar... women The 1850 census had 41.7% of women marrying as teenagers. 13% of the time the husband was 10 years older than his teenage bride. This was in cases of monogamy not statistics about marrying teenage brides among polygamists.
Its different because warren Jeffs knew modern standards, and there were no comparable standards in Joseph smiths day. Most states in Joseph smith's day had age of consent at 10 years. It was only in the late 19th century that age of consent laws were raised. "Conclusion Joseph Smith's polygamous marriages to young women seem difficult to understand or explain today, but in his own time such age differences were not typically an obstacle to marriage. The plural marriages were unusual, to say the least; the younger ages of the brides were much less so. Critics do not provide this perspective because they wish to shock the audience and have them judge Joseph by the standards of the modern era, rather than his own time." Helen's friend no doubt misrepresented what she said. I once talked to this head of this local anti-Mormon ministry. I said that i liked the look of his tracts. The next thing i knew i was cited in his newsletter as if i endorsed the tracts which i did not. People can lie that is why i am hesitant to accept a person who lies as Helen's friend. Plus Helen was pro-polygamy and for her to say she felt decieved would be out of character for her. Plus she was not Joseph smiths bed-mate. I like Todd Compton hold their was no sex in the marriage. The FAIR article i linked to makes clearer his position than i can. But i hold she was only married to him in name only for eternity only which is what Helen tried to tell her idiot friend. |

I will try one time to correct the link. If my 2nd try does not work go to the top of the FAIR Wiki main page top for the article.
http://en.fairmormon.org/Joseph_Smith%27s_mar... Giving out info is great, but not giving out information without knowing all the facts. To make unfair comparisons between Joseph smith and Warren Jeffs is abusing Todd Compton's research in his book. He chastized Jerald and Sandra Tanner for abusing his scholarship to say stuff he did not say. He did the list of 33 wives used above so listen to him. |

With the 11 polyandry cases Joseph smith is accused of Todd Compton did not read D.&C.132 before accusing Joseph Smith of having sex with those women. The revelation requires a woman to be divorced before she could be appointed a new husband. And like Matthew 19 it requires the husband to be guilty of adultury? Otherwise Joseph smith could only marry virgins. A woman having two husbands at the same time was adultury according to the document.
All 11 women went back to live with the husbands which would be adultury. In order for it not to be adultury these have to be meant for eternity only ceremonies, or they would have to be divorced from Joseph Smith after marrying him. I favor the idea like with Helen these were marriages for eternity. Them living with Joseph Smith, or having his children would be adultury As this is no doubt what he taught these 11 women and husbands. Death however released the women from their mortal vows and whatever happened in the afterlife was thought proper. |

1 Todd compton held that Patty Session's also on the polyandry list with Joseph Smith had no sex. He was only open to the sexuality because of the liar Angus Cannon, and his over-trust of the Josephine Fisher claim. Any sex and Sylvia knew this that she would be guilty of adultury under the revelation. The only one she could have sex with without being guilty of adultury according to the revelation was the husband she was vowed to before Joseph Smith? Joseph Smith if the revelation is authentic wrote a very Anti-polyandry revelation. It is very clear that polyandry is wrong. It would not prevent sealings for the afterlife, but not stealing other mens wives. If he did what you think he did he wrote a document to expose his behavior to those 11 men. That he included it shows me he had nothing to fear as he had done nothing contrary to the revelation. The 11 men knew that, and the 11 women knew that he had done nothing wrong with them. |

1 http://www.restorationbookstore.org I am positive and sure Joseph Smith was marriedto living women for the eternity. I am not positive nor sure D.&C. 132, William Clayton's Nauvoo Journal are not forgeries to make Joseph smith the author of polygamy. His journal said the polygamy revelation Emma destroyed was 10 pages. The surviving Joseph Kingsbury copy is 7-8 pages. If these sources are authentic Why did William Law say the copy he had seen was 2or3 pages foolscap not 10? MRM has his interview online to read. James Whitehead reported he had seen the Bishop Whitney copy. And he thought it was only a page. He also claimed William Law had lied about the content allowing for living with the wives and having children. He also claimed the LDS published version had been altered via tampering to sanction such polygamy. If he was right it only allowed for afterlife polygamy. Others in my denomination think its authentic. They take the position his was guilty, but repended of earthly polygamy before his death. In light of all the conflicting testimony about the size, content of the original copy its hard to get everybody to agree the facts are true facts. |

1 Joseph Smith’s teen wives: 1.Fanny Alger 16-I know of the documentation that is supposed to convince me she was a wife. I have read ISL many times and still see what happened as an affair. Chauncey webb claimed Fanny was pregnant? People can lie. Ed Decker claimed Mormonism destoyed his family in thE godmakers film. it turned out he had cheated on his wife. 2.Sarah Ann Whitney 17-I treat this an eternity only relationship. Joseph Kingsbury called his marriage to her pretended after Todd Compton confesses it turned into a real sexual marriage. No doubt sexuality was always included in the marriage, but he called it such perhaps to demean her marriage to him. Time and for eternity words, the 1842 letter to the Whitney's does not say Joseph Smith and her were ever alone contrary to popular misinterpretations. 3.Lucy Walker 17-A U.S. Judge in the Temple Lot case decided she was not Joseph Smith's plural wife. People like Todd Compton cite the case to back up such women. But they always leave out the fact the decision of the judge went against her testimony. One theory is she told the truth and another is she only got sealed to Joseph smith for eternity and in Utah misrepresented herself as Joseph smiths wife. With my disputing the authenticity of william Clayton's journal nothing exists to back up her claim. 4.Flora Ann Woodworth 16-Unless you can prove William Clayton's journal authentic nothing much exists to back up the claim. To me it was a sealing for eternity only misrepresented in Utah. 5.Emily Dow Partridge 19-Sealing for eternity that possibly got misrepresented in Utah. She had to say she roomed with Joseph smith, or expose the Apostles polygamy conspiracy against Joseph Smith. 6.Sarah Lawrence 17-She denied having a relationship with Joseph Smith. 7.Maria Lawrence 19-The Apostles waited until she died before claiming her an earthly wife. so she could not stand up for herself. 8.Helen Mar Kimball 14-platonic marriage to JS. 9.Melissa Lott 19-Her claim also rejected in the TLC. She told Joseph Smith 3rd she no sex in the mansion house. But rather that it happened in some other location once. But she provided the court an false affidavit where she gave the room number of Joseph Smiths Mansion House where it happened. 10.Nancy M. Winchester [14?]-Another platonic sealing misrepresented as her being Joseph's bed-mate. |

1 If he practiced earthly polygamy with some of them then he was wrong? I am not positive nor sure he was innocent. I am not positive nor sure he was guilty. |

1 Have you ever read the bible? Or heard the basic tennents of catholicsim.... Now that crap is truly crazy, mind numbingly crazy... but I guess thats the point. If it sounds like the word of god (with alot of "thou" "thine" "doists" "thust" and lets not forget "smiteith") then it must be the "truth" eventually our once free country will look like Iran... with "the lords word" replacing the constitution and bill of rights... Unless we fight hard for seperation of church and state and refuse its faulty doctrines and morals... or we start stoning unbelevers to death. as the Lord Commandeth Hardcore fundamentelists should be kept under constant supervision by the feds, Groups like the FLDS as well as the backwoods snakehandeler penticostals are growing at an alarming rate. Timothy McVeigh was a member of one such group and various militant "christion" groups are popping up all over the country with member numbers in the hundreds of thousands. Some of these groups claim leaders to be the second coming of the Lord, or god and convince their followers their message is that of the lord. The only true word of god is that of mine in wich he spoke only to a "select" group of people many thousands of years ago. Any group or person who claims to hath spoken or heard the voice of the lord firsthand is trying to control a group or individual. this includes every single poet who wrote the original bibles and every founder of every dogma. Any christian who dosn't seeith that "the word of god" is only the word of man with an appendix at the end stating that god had mentioned to them as they were the special "annointed one" to hear the word and write it down and establish rule over those in which "he" commandeth to are in fact just as brainwashed as and child member of some idiotic dogma. My biggist argument to this "FACT" is... Exactly how many words did the holy one accually pen himself...... the answer is exactly none... Is it not about time that we stop showing these inbred hicks the respect for their B.S.(biblical scripture) before our our constitution looks like the muslim constitution (the Al Quran) and our last rights are gone the way of the Lord ... all shot to hell. |

Did you see Criss Angel "walk" on water in a swimming pool and a lake? Was Joseph Smith perhaps an illusionist, con man, etc. with mental health issues? Did you know Charles Manson gets or got fan mail? There are people who admire him. They got the death penalty, but at the reunion one of the followers said someone had a higher power and was watching over them. The Rod Parker like attorney wanted to try to explain about Susan Atkins and her part in the murders. Now she has brain cancer and only a short time to live. They are definitely a commercial for just say no to "acid"... They said even most of the druggies got the heck out of Spahn Ranch when they saw what was going on. Will Warren play out like Charlie, living out his days in jail? |

1 as far as the warren jeffs thing goes, it may have been the practice in the past to marry young but life expectancy was a lot shorter back then so it was a means to perpetuate humanity. polygamy has never been acceptable in advanced society. it wasn't ok when joseph smith did it and it's not ok for the flds to do it now. the government is trying to protect children from having to deal with situations that they aren't developmentally ready for (emotionally or physically). the age of consent was raised for a reason. these ppl brainwash their own children into thinking that if they don't marry someone old enough to be their father in some cases then they're going to hell. that sounds to me like coercion, not religious beliefs. for all of you out there that children let me ask you this... would you knowingly marry your 13/14 daughter to her uncle that's 20years older than her and still be able to sleep at night knowing what he is doing to her? this isn't about love or happiness it's legalized incest. those families don't breed outside their world and most families are interwoven by a few ppl that they suffer horrible birth defects. there have even been cases of fathers marrying their own daughters!! you can't tell me that it's genetically stable by any shoot of the imagination. anyway, i don't think that jeffs should carry all the blame. most of it belongs to the parents of these children that are failing to protect them for a society of pedophiles. religious views aside, our children deserve protection from those that are harming them. |
