Very misleading headline. I thought the City of Rochester was eliminating the positions. Nicely done.

I wish our city would do the same. Every other branch of civil service has bought into Duffy's request to do a little extra to save the city money. I say we have too many firefighters anyways. Most of the time all they do is sit around the firehouse and they had a problem with watching fire hydrants to be used on extra hot days when all they would be doing anyways is responding to calls to close fire hydrants. When houses on fire start not getting responded to then I'll say we have the firefighter shortage they always claim that they have.

Hope Canandaigua does not have a fire like the Dollar store in Rochester. If letting the fireman go, it is going to save money, then why does Cdga. want to buy the property across from the Hess station at the price of a million. You can not even go swimming in the lake unless you pay. What a shame that they have ruined the "city".

Dont you have to have volunteers in place before you can rely on them. The city council is retarded in the fact that they wont understand what they are doing until someone dies in a fire because of lack of manpower or timely response.. then i hope they can live with their decision .. and explain it to their family!

It's about time. All firefighters are so fat it's funny! We can all do without less. Make them work a little harder and they wouldn't get fat, besides they are all overpaid.
OVERPAID & UNDER WORKED!
Smitty You sir have no clue. Firefighters get paid for what they could be called upon to do. They train regularly as well as do building inspections, preplanning, fire prevention, house and apparatus maintenence, and answer alarms.. would you want an overworked firefighter who needs all the energy he can to fight a fire or save someone respond to your house. Now he is over worked and fatigued... so fatigued he cant fight the fire to save your children fromt heir fate..

your an idiot!

Wow, I'm glad I don't live in Canandaigua. Putting money above peoples safety!! What a shame, aren't they going to build more big hotels on the lake or something? Why not scale down on that non-sense and keep people safe. Must be the people on the boards that voted for this have never experienced a bad house fire or lost a loved one in a fire. I think that their vote would be different if they did. I'll pray for all of you Canandaigua people

Just wait until everyones fire insurance goes through the roof after they cut the department. The politicians will claim to have have balanced the budget without raising taxes but the people will be paying more for less fire protection.

I can't believe you used the term "retard." Don't you know that offends people? Please rephrase this to "Some of the people on city council must be special needs." THANKS

Would you like take a look at the numbers of fires compared to the numbers of firefighters because the proof is in the pudding. Or just pick any random firehouse in Rochester and visit. 95% chance you will find all firetrucks and firemen in the building.
If there was a shortage like they always claim, I do believe there would be fires not getting responded to.

I want firefighters there ready to respond to an emergency. It has to do with response times to an incident. Sure firefighters could be cut back so they respond from 5 miles away. They will respond and will be an extra 7 minutes from the call. Only a reckless person would advocate that and I know you sound more intelligent than that. Like I said. Your the expert and I'm sure until you need the fire depts assistance when your in distress that will be your story and you will stick to it. Your the same type of person that would say "whats taking the firefighters so long to respond??" when you do need help. It's time to take yor solutions to your elected officials and back them up with facts if you feel so strongly about this and sure you have the answers. Not just state things such as "well....I always just see firefighters in the firehouse...." Try to be proactive with facts and offer solutions to the community. Now crunch the #'s.

I can't debate with extremists that say stupid $h#t. Extra seven minutes away. How? If you cut back on idle manhours that are paid, not facilities and equipment, they will be just as close with the same back up if there were to be a fire outbreak. I would think that it was obvious that I wasn't talking about shutting down whole stations, but you wanted to be the Rainman.

Oh, and the possibility of citizen volunteers being trained has been explored, but guess whose union always shoots that down. You try getting some facts before you defend leeches.
