"He also told police that he was aware the alleged victim has a learning disability." "...the alleged victim suffers from a learning disability..."

I am a student at Landmark and I feel you should mention that Landmark is a school for the Learning Disabled...

Is this bad in the "do as you feel or want world". It doesn't matter what she join and started and said stop. Where was this assailant from oh there it is Chicago land oh he was just trying to educate her in his experience field of treating females with respect till you get and run [sorta like a corner store robbery]. He probably good at that and his past of alcohol at this [college] and caught in 2 lies to the state police. oh come on he's a good kid. Most of the students are sent to landmark to give their parents a break from their behavior and have been bought and sold with money and toys all there life of being spoiled.

LET ME PREFACE THIS BY LETTING THE AVERAGE READER KNOW THAT EVERYONE AT LANDMARK COLLEGE HAS A DIAGNOSED LEARNING DISABILITY AND IS SAID TO BE AT LEAST 2-3 YEARS LESS MATURE THAN A "NORMAL" CHILD IN THE SAME AGE BRACKET ( NOT JUST THE VICTIM)

THIS ARTICLE IS UTTERLY RIDICULOUS-WORDS ARE TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT AND IT IS FILLED WITH MERE CONJECTURES.

FIRST AND FOREMOST - REED is being trialed for sexual assault NOT rape, yet this article claims that he committed the latter. Things just don't match up here. Reed told the police that he was not under the influence that night, and that he no longer drinks NOT that he dosen't drink or never has.

Why would the roomate leave if there was force being used? a percentage of the kids that go to this college have azburgers. IF thats the case, the fact that she has such maturity problems leads me to believe that her understanding of social cues may have lead to false understanding of what ACTUALLY happened. this all sounds contrived and dramatized by the media.

INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY.

i'm itching to rebut the main assertion of your post, but it's kind of indecipherable; i can however address the inaccuracies in your characterization of landmark as a dumping ground for belligerent, entitled illiterates. landmark is a 2-year transitional institution for individuals with diagnosed learning disabilities who have sought out further academic refinement before pursuing additional post-secondary education, and serves as behavioral rehab only in the sense that it cultivates the habits necessary for future success. if you want your opinions to be given any credence, base them in fact.

First off, to "flat lander" Landmark College is a college for Students who learn differently. The only difference between Landmark and any other two year college is the support that is offered. I am a Landmark student, and I know for a fact that I was not sent here to give my parents a break from my behavior. I CAME here by choice, so I could succeed in life. Before you go around accusing, and saying things such as "Most of the students are sent to landmark to give their parents a break from their behavior and have been bought and sold with money and toys all there life of being spoiled." learn the facts and get it right.

XAN--the presence of a learning disability does not invariably coincide with a deficit in maturity.

Regardless, it's called rape! Someone forces you to perform a sexual act, it is called rape and it is about power and control and not sex. people with learning disabilities understand it's wrong, please...is that the excuse. I think not. It is what it is.

what the staff says and what the truth is always filtered though the media release [Dean Wormer ]and all you LMC enjoy your stay and next year the replacements show up for their chance of achievement As for the town gains very little from the aggregation that a few do for their selfish gain and behavior that is shared by all on or off campus as well as the area. When your day comes to realize the big picture I hope for you that is in full "HD" color happy treat and stop the tricks, the light is on you.

Your first paragraph is highly offensive to those of us who are givted with learning styles which are not rewarded by typical and antiquated teaching methods.

Everyone understands that sexual assault is horrific, illegal and a serious problem on many college campuses.

I think you are missing the point of the student’s criticism. As a dyslexic person who is not a student at Landmark, I too was offended by the characterizations in the article. The reformer presented a distraught mother’s painful reactions to a horrible situation in such a way that suggests that those of us who learn differently are less than human. Shame on you, Reformer. Why can this be an article about a criminal proceeding without having to disparage the concerned parties’ learning stiles.

If you look at the DSM, a large percentage of neurologically diagnosed students are less mature than their same aged non-diagnosed peers. However, that does not guarantee that this is true for every individual, especially given the diverse array of disorders present at Landmark College.

To those offended by the label of learning disability, I apologize, I am a student at Landmark college and can understand where you are coming from-but, re-read my post. I was just trying to be thorough and provide a disclaimer for those who think the accused is somewhat mentally superior to the alleged victim and somehow "took advantage of her"....

I am simply making the point that media fosters propaganda to gain viewers. START WITH THE FACTS NOT with the heresay.

"Why would the roomate leave if their was force being used?"

Richmond, Calif.(CBS/AP) October 30, 2009

For two hours they watched the alleged gang rape of a 15-year-old girl outside her high school homecomming dance. They pointed. They laughed. They took pictures, say investigators. But no one among the approximately two dozen gawkers called the police. Now it is looking like they might not face any criminal responsibility......

I hope the roommate that cooperated and enabled this attack is immediately expelled from that school. He/she is entirely responsible for not simply seeking help for the innocent victim.
As for the rapist - he should rot in jail for far longer than 3 years.

I am a Landmark student one whom has been here multiple semesters, and while I have no direct connection with either the boy in question or the female victim I have many friends who are very close with both sides.

To hear it told by those whom claimed to have been physically in the dormitory that night, Reed Stewart did not aggressively or physically kick the roommate out. Further as stated previously in this thread ALL Landmark students have some sort of neurological diagnosis, often times a lack of social skills is co-current with having a disorder, and perhaps the roommate simply did not pick up on Mr. Stewart's intentions.

Further there is no way should could have known Reed's intentions ahead of time. The defense attorney's statement shows that Mr. Stewart and his "victim" had been intimate previously, and thus his want to be alone with the "victim" was probably a routine occurrence.

The media also continues to demonize Mr. Stewart by saying he did this to a poor girl with a learning disability, meanwhile Mr. Stewart also suffers from a learning disability, otherwise he would be unable to attend Landmark. I cannot attest to the actions of that night, as I have no direct connection with either party, but since the incident the girl has informally on campus denied that she has been raped to multiple people, and has not only been acting relatively normal, but also has sought out further male attention, a behavior which is not indicative of one who has just suffered from sexual assault.

Her lack of social perception, coupled with her parents overzealous feelings of protection toward their daughter may have culminated in a situation that did not merit this type of legal reaction. It has now become a media circus, and a breeding ground for every common Joe to express their opinions on rape, without feeling the need to do further research on the event itself.

I for one am a large supporter of life in jail for rapists, and have always treated women with the utmost respect. Should it be proven that he did in fact rape this girl, I am firmly in favor of Mr. Stewart being throw in jail for the rest of his miserable life. However, before I or anyone else pass judgement, the situation itself should be analyzed, and the neurological abnormalities of the students involved complicates the situation further.

Dude DUH what part of life did your parents leave out explaining about abuse of taking advantage of those that are less fortunate then most. this is a typical case of what happens when the little head takes all the blood and the big head stops thinking and goes into animal instinct mode.

I think Flat lander should go, but then might bring down the learning curve for the stupidity that this person posts. Obviously this person doesn't care about anyone but him/herself as they take it as a excuse for paying taxes for help those in need. Heck I would not be surprise if most of those students are even smarter then this grade A moron.

I attend landmark college and I know the roommate. She had no idea what was going on. She had been in that room for two days and she did not know anything about the situation. The roommate had answered the door and told Samantha that it was for her. Samantha willingly let the boy into the room and lay down next to him. Then he said that he wanted to sleep with his girlfriend. Samantha's roommate thought that Samantha had no problem with the attention she was receiving and left the room willingly because she did not want to be in the room if her roommate was having sex. She is a fairly strong girl and I know that if she had known what was going on she would have had no problem beating Stewart senseless.
