South Chicago neighborhood is 'Death Row' for children

Full story: Chicago Tribune

Even before three teens were gunned down in this part of South Chicago , it was not unusual for workmen to refuse a job, for apartments to sit empty and for friends to turn down a social call because of ...

First of all, where are the teachers disciplining these children for teasing this poor kid about his sister dying?? That's followed up by the question: where the hell are the parents giving these kids a smack or five for doing the teasing?? Have we become so pathetic and cold as a society that our children tease another child about their sibling getting KILLED?? Sick!

Second of all, these kinds of neighborhoods and killing sprees are going to continue until the Judicial branch of the government gets their heads out of their rear ends and figures out that gangs and gang bangers need to be exterminated. Either kill them off or ship them out of the country onto a desert island. I don't care which it is, but eliminate them. You can send the rapper thug a-holes there too since they're basically a complete waste of skin and oxygen and do absolutely nothing to contribute to society except create more of these little monsters.

Neighborhoods like this will never improve so long as the Democratic "leaders" who represent this area continue to create a culture of handouts and dependency, rather than improvement through merit and accountability.

This exact story would be applicable to 1969, 1979, 1989, and 1999 in addition to 2009, and I fear 2019 and beyond as well.

I lived in that area on 87th and Marquette in the Mid 90's and the violence was present then. I am thankful I was able to improve my life and move my family to the Southwest Suburbs before the Southside claimed my children to gangs or one of us lost our lives. My heart goes out to the families of these babies. You can lead your children in the right direction but the lure of the streets sometimes can be too much and they succumb. I am very Blessed I was able to keep mine straight.

I grew up on the south side, and I used to believe this until we started complaining to the police about the open air drug dealing on our block. Despite multiple complaints, including detailed directions on where they hid their stash, they did nothing. After a while, people stop complaining. The only thing that stopped it is when the "stash" buildings were tuck-pointed and renovated.

Personally, I think there is a lot of drug money in the pockets of CPD officers, because you would have to be a fool to not see a lot of what goes on. And I lived in a decent neighborhood with very proactive residents. God help the poor people who live further south and west.

No question...I Wont be caught south of the loop..or even on the loop after dark if i can avoid it. In a city and a state where law abiding people are basically punished at every turn for defending themselves, this is what happens. police unable and unwilling to take down the criminal element, and the few good people left forced to stay inside, away from windows, for fear they will be shot or preyed upon by the criminal element. This was the case in many areas of NYC back in the 70's but thanks to a couple tough people entering the political scene it all stopped. We are so afraid however of upsetting the minority's here that the police cannot effectively police the community for fear of suspension, lawsuit, or even jail.

we need a web of checkpoints and ID checks in the most troubled areas. Do warrant checks and full patdowns at designated access points. It is sad it has come to that, but it is necessary. I served 14 months in Iraq and sadly, felt safer there than in many parts of Chicago.

Any parent whose child is out after curfew, automatic misdemeanor- strict liability. Second offense- felony. Third offense- felony and child is removed from home.

Any offense the child commits that results in damage to life or property, and the $ will be automatically put as a lien on parents' earnings until paid off. If the parents do not have a job, then it is debited from public assistance payments.

Victims rights come first- everything else is subordinate to that.

What kind of enforcement is there in Chicago, I mean seriously? Are there no law enforcement units specifically for gangs and high-crime areas? I'm always noticing stuff like this in the Chicago Tribune. Sounds like a disheartening place to live.

You do not need to be a social or criminal expert to see the facts. They are staring us in the face.

1. This is a situation in EVERY American city. EVERY one of them has neighborhoods just like the South side of Chicago.

2. They are always in the black neighborhoods.

3. They are violent, gang, and drug infested.

4. THere are no rules about "collateral damage to civilians" as there was when the Italian mafia controlled things.(Women and children were off limits).

5. There is absolutely no concern about consequences. To themselves or to others.

6. Its been going on for 40 years.

7. The culture expanded the "freebies" from the government to include "quick and easy money" from drugs.

8. Good parents in those neighborhoods lose the battle of keeping their kids on the straight and narrow to the popularity and money of the gangs.

9. Police can't prevent this. They are responders. Not social workers or parents.

10. The criminal system is overloaded from court room to prisons because of this culture.

11. The mentality and geographics of this are expanding. Its not limited to a few blocks. The worst violence is in specific neighborhoods. But, individual acts of gang violence are moving beyond the urban areas.

12. Its popularized in the hip hop music.

13. Too many children want to fit in so they start life with the ebonics. Then the "cool" actions that demonstrate ignorance. And bam, the parents turn around and see their kid is a banger.

14. Its popular to be from "the hood". As if they want a medal or think its special.

15. Some in the black community perceive this behavior as a divine right.

16. Some in the black community use this as another reason or excuse for "separtist" movement in America.

Our cities are more violent than any place on earth except maybe some African countries. What an embarrassment.

These are the future terrorists of America. They just need a leader that will guide them in a direction beyond drugs and money. And when that happens..........our cities and country as we know it today will be far worse than we could ever imagine.

Why not talk about the "north" side? I've never even been to the South side. I'm afraid of it. I'm from Detroit.

South side is pretty much the same as Detroit, but there are more buildings here.

Its called civil rights. you can point out the stash all you want, doesn't make legal to arrest someone unless you want to be a witness. Then they have to doing an investigation for which there is no time for because they have to answer a large amount of calls with no manpower.

I can see how those who are not Black might perceive this to be a 'Black' problem, but it's really not - when anyone and everyone gets killed at the end of the day (and before everyone starts yelling - I AM Black).

Because the majority of these crimes seem to be perpetrated by and against Black people though, the onus is on us to stand up and take the risk of speaking out to get this problem heard and addressed properly. I'm not talking the 10-minute Jesse Jackson publicity stunt marches - I'm talking us calling the police each and every time we see dealing on the corner, or dealers hanging around waiting for their next sale, or hear gunshots whether or not anyone's hurt or killed.

If we don't care then no one else is going to either.

Also, I think it's so true - the Democrats and liberals have laid waste to our community - why should we 'accept' that welfare mothers are sitting at home all day every day, and instead of checking that their children are at school and doing thir homework, let them go out and deal drugs and rob and kill if it gets them and extra $20 for their daily bottle of ripple? They're doing that on OUR TAX DOLLARS - how on earth is that right?

Why do we 'accept' schools where not even a child born with a 200+ IQ can' learn how to read and write?

Why do we 'accept' ebonic as our primary language?

Wake up my people - lets start taking responsibilty for our sad state of affairs, and do something to make lasting change!

Daily Horoscope for December 11

Cancer

If you want to avoid having a row with someone, get out and about as much as possible today so you can work off all your nervous energy. If you stay in one place for too long you'll be in danger of becoming moody, and possibly even a right old crosspatch. You might also lose your temper with loved ones who are being bolshie or who have the audacity to disagree with you about something. Lighten up, Cancer!
