Every thing these people do disrupts the quality of life. The people pushing this bridge are looking to make money. They do not care about the ones that have to live with the after math. And they will do it on the backs of the taxpayers.

I agree. This bridge will not ease traffic on NC 12. Widen 12 from Southern Shores to Duck and dramatically improve the interchange from 158 to 12 in Southern Shores. The traffic issues are The result of a poor interchange design at 158/12. If Southern Shores and Duck want the traffic to improve, then widen NC 12. You could put 100 bridges to the Outer Banks but if the base issues are not addressed then nothing will help.

That makes sense. The majority of the traffic isn't headed north on 12.

There is no way to widen Route 12 without interfering with hundreds of commercial and residential properties, not to mention the beach atmosphere on the Currituck Outer Banks and village of Duck. Commissioners, the bridge is a safety and tourist issue and unfortunately a project long overdue. Let's find the best suitable site on both sides of the sound.

Build a bypass around Duck would solve most of the back-ups.

Take a look at Corolla today. The beaches and infrastructure will not support the transient population the bridge will bring.

How is the Bridge a safety issue? There has NEVER been a problem evacuating the northern outer banks. Are you saying you would rather drive through Eliz. City to evacuate? Virginia is not going to let evacuees to go north, they have enough problems. If the area is so over developed then stop developing!!! And what about that ridiculous intersection at 158/12? If that was dramatically improved ie. bring 158 south over 158 north at 12 and get rid of the stop light the traffic would improve as much or more than spending 640 million on a bridge that is NOT needed.

It is not just a matter of safe and timely evacuations, although that is a growing concern. During Isabel in 2003, there were 6-hour delays with no car movement from Corolla on south into Duck. Imagine that same drive today with so many more houses. The main safety issue is getting residents or vacationers from the northern Currituck beaches to medical facilities. As it is, trauma cases must be driven to a firehouse landing zone and helicoptered out to Norfolk. To try and reach OBX Hospital in Nags Head (not a trauma center) is just not an option in summer traffic. With more, and older, full-time Corolla residents, medical evacuation is crucial. No one wanted to see this kind of population boom here. There are always pros and cons to any project.(I do agree the Route 12/158 intersection could be greatly improved.)

Currituck County just o.k.$200,000 toward a medical helicopter for Sentara Hospital so the critically injured would receive faster care than when the roads are clear. Building this bridge will just speed the development over there and thus increase the need for greatly improved infrastructure all around. Too many people in an area with narrow roads will always have traffic the Turnpike Authority admits this. The real question is what really does Currituck County envision for the northern Outer Banks, just an extension of Kitty Hawk? How many tourists actually drive north to Corolla vs. from Southern Shores to Duck. This bridge is to placate those in Southern Shores thru Duck that are tired of the traffic. Now we'll have traffic everywhere and ruin Aydlett for what?

I once was an avid proponent of the new bridge. I admit I will certainly enjoy getting to the beach in about 20 minutes versus 1 hour + if it is built.

After reading the JHS19 comments a few day ago and pondering them I am seeing this bridge in a different light. He makes perfect sense about the intersection problems. Especially when the economy is in the shape it is I am now going to have to agree that building the bridge is not the right thing to do.

As for evacuation safety, the 24-7 weather now gives us days to prepare. Can that really be used as a reason the bridge is needed?

Daily Horoscope for December 29

Virgo

If something is weighing on your mind it will start to affect your health, Virgo. It might make you feel tired or depressed, or it could dominate your thoughts. You know what you should do about it, of course, but it seems like too much effort or you want to pretend that it doesn't exist. Unfortunately, this escapist attitude won't make the problem go away and might even make it more tricky by the time you finally decide to tackle it.
