Should Laptops Be Issued to Middle Schoolers?

The school district should not be buying computers to middle school kids. Don't be surprised if they come up missing at school or are used for other things other than school use.

Depends what operating system the laptops have on them:

If it's Linux - sure. Let them start writing shell scripts and compiling kernels at a young age.

If it's OS X - there's a risk of children getting spoilt with Apple's eye-candy.

If it's Vista - definitely not, as it would constitute child abuse.

i say that till the world ends computers will be in them. why not start them at a young age on a computer.this way they are use to how they work and how to use them the right way and might mean they get out of school and do soem thign besides working at a fast food joit some where

You need to get off the computer and find someone that can teach you how to write.

I honestly think this can be argued both ways, children at first may use the computers for school work, but then when they get bored they will use them for other things (maybe not so appropriate). They should be monitared, and blocked.

The Niagara Falls, NY school district decided to do exactly that. People openly worried that they would come up stolen.

Guess what? They did!

Try having your family so mad at you because you know more about computers then them and they send your daughter to your home to steal your computer so they can use the excuse that you need it so she can do her schoolwork but she is violating a Criminal Trespass order so you cannot get it back but you have the receipt and your mother is doing it so you cannot have any say in your daughters life.
