Yet it happens every day! In most cases there are grandfathers, uncles, family friends, etc. to fill that role. Most women do a wonderful job of parenting filling both roles, many times out of necessity.
My oldest son never knew his father, he died in a motorcycle accident when I was 2 months pregnant...he had a grandpa and uncles who happily doted on him - he turned out just fine, thank you!
