it is my understanding that the penn theater community trust got mixed up with raisley BEFORE they knew what he is. now, they are trying to get out from underneath him and their debt to him.
to wait until they are trying to do that to call for a boycott of the trust and their supporters really seems wrong to me. i think we should help the penn theater community trust break away from raisley as fast as they can instead of making it more difficult.... |

Fro the article in The Eagle it seems like Davey who runs the show has a very low opinion of the current owner. Their problem is that there is nobody who will contribute as long as he and mayor Maggie have their hands in the project, and as long as there are no funds coming in the banks will shun them. There was enough damage done to the building without sufficient funds when they started tearing down the ceiling etc. and now they are stuck with a half wrecked building they don't have the funds to repair. They are in a bad circle with no way out. |

Lifelong, your position is well taken. For me, the article has more evidence of deception to the citizenry of the city. Rasely assigned the penn theater mortgage to Mrs. Doolittle in Dec of 07. Child molesters do hamper their efforts. Panhandling for perverts wouldn't work for anyone. They never attempted to break ties until forced by finances. they have had a year to do so. I would speculate the property was transferred to avoid the stigma of trying to get grants under the child molesters name toward a childrens venue. The eagle article has false facts throughout it. |
time it has taken too long to break ties w/raisley, no doubt about that. it's a shame it is financially motivated for the most part also. that being said, they are doing it now. to shun them would cause a terrible loss for many of the teens in our community. there are a great many shows put on there during the summer for the teens where several local bands play. penn theater is the best venue because of location. to take that away from them because of the past unacceptable actions of the penn theater community trust would be punishing those teens. i perfer to suport their actions now. the eagle is FULL of false information, half truths and flat out silliness... |

I would like to see a wrecking ball take out the theater. The days of that OLD theater are over! The building is nothing but an eyesore on the city. It is not the only eyesore either. The old Troutman building and old Penny's should also go. In fact, driving down Main St today I saw not one building below the courthouse worth saving from a wrecking ball. Wipe it all out and build one story shops with no apartments above. Also include good parking areas. Time to let go of the historical aspect of these tired looking buildings.

Lifelong, I hear you loud and clear. I can't say I completely disagree with you. The theater was a staple in Butler years ago. I used to go often as a kid. My sister's first job was there. However, I think it needs more responsible people running it. I understand it's a place for the kids to go but it is dangerous. Should something happen there we need responible people to intervine. It has been hijacked by high society fruitcakes. Someone had a good idea in the webletters to the eagle. Why not open the Butler pool for a good venue for kids. I know some may not be able to contain themselves, with all the little boys running around in swimtrunks, but atleast it is out in the open where the children can be watched. I would say yes to the Penn if it were run by morally compentent persons. I think as long as the mayor and her friends try to push Don Rasely's dream the community should reject it. There are other things we can do with the kids of the community. |
He transfered all his properties and other assets to friends and family out of fear of being sued. If none of his victims come after him, he can easily get it back. So far nobody has dragged him to court. The latest victim's family have had too many other tragedies to keep them occupied, to even think of lawsuits and endless court appearances and delays. It would at this time be too stressful for them. Someone else has to come forward and do it. |

I have a problem with the people who were involved with the properety transfer. They have ties to both Peter and Billy Shaffer, the two brother judges that took over the Rasely case when Kevin O'donnell recused. Why did Kevin Recuse? Seems the Shaffers had more conflicts to recuse over. What threat was made to O'donnell? Was it the fact O'donnell was running around with a married woman and the cronies knew? Makes you wonder. I still say the ones close to the family should file judicial complaints with the Judicial conduct board against the Shaffers as well as the disciplinary board of the supreme court for the lawyers and prosecutors that helped fix the case. The evidence lays there bofore you. |

time i see the benefit in opening the pool up, of course. however, the pool wouldn't meet the needs of the teenagers that use the penn as a venue for entertainment. they look for things to do at night. kids hanging out at night has been a long-time problem in our community and opening the swimming pool, although a great idea, isn't going to help with that. city ordinance and noise complaints make it impossible to have the concerts in the park. being teens, music is a huge part of their lives. it's not an easy problem to fix. there has to be an answer. opening the swimming pool won't replace what the penn is used for. |

Well one of those empty buildings on Main or even a side street could be used.
Once upon a time, in a land far far away, a mayor of Butler used to find places for our bands to play. |

i don't know about any of that. i don't see anyone else stepping up. westminster church is having a show on may 1. sometimes a church up near diamond park has them, but they don't have many lately. the accoustic show with gifts for sofia that was supposed to be at the penn on may 16 had to be moved to alemeda park. i'm not real sure what else is available in butler city... suggestions?

No one is going to step up. This town is terrified of kids, most of which are good citizens. Most of the bands that I went to see, and were close friends with were Christian, anti drug, anti smoking,(straight edge) kids. Most of the concerts put on were all planned, promoted, paid for, by the bands themselves. With most of the leg work and planning being done by Travis Furman, one of my favorite people of all time. I miss those young carefree times. |

i agree. nobody wants to step up and offer a realistic solution for our teens. there are a few "production companies" in town now. one of them has really made it tough for the other ones by getting caught dealling weed at one of their shows. this is a prime example of why responsible adults need to be involved in these things. i have never met travis, although i have heard good things about him... |
