I agree it would be nice for the smokers to have a place to smoke and unlike what people think we (most anyway) do not take advantage of this...like taking extra long to smoke to get a break. I just received a 2nd letter saying more taxes are due from 2006. I don't even think I knew about internet cigarettes back then. When calling, they said they could not provide me with information that I would have to call the cigarette company. Does this make sense? How do I know they are on the up and up if they can't provide me with info????
u need to call company that u purchase cigs from.to PROVE your tax claim.they will CHEAT you.if u dont defend yourself you will be rack over the coals.when u have your information file an appeal.as time move on interest and late fees applies.i was charge with 664.50.with payment plan by them i will be paying 725.00.almost 100.00 more.

Today I got a letter regarding alleged cigarette purchases going back to 2005. It says I purchased 23 cartons in 3 weeks from "Buy Cheap Cigarettes" and "Smart Smoker".
This is a hoot since I don't know anyone who could smoke THAT many cigarettes (4600) in such a short amount of time and I have no recollection of tobacco purchases during that time period, or any at all from those companies. My bank records do not show any purchases from tobacco sellers during the months, immediately before, after, or during this period. Very weird!
Has anyone appealed this notice on the basis of inaccuracy?
Seems to me if the State of PA's Dept. of Revenue has the "evidence" of these purchases then they should be able to fill in the blanks as to an accurate date, time, and cost of the cigarettes that were shipped - unless they plan to slam everyone later for "falsification of records".
Being that it is a Saturday, no one is sitting by the phone in Harrisburg right now, but I intend to contact them on Monday or Tuesday. Wonder if it would be wasted effort to try and file an appeal?
what happen?i file an appeal today.and email that governor about this.tomorrow,i be downloading my total purchase from smart smokers.what piss me off kingsley cost 11.99 and they want 13.50 per carton!! i will rot in jail before they rake me over their corrupt coals.after all what they bring will only help them get a big fat pay raise in the thousands?so complain and dont lay down for them,

I also received a form letter sent to an old address. It was forwarded by the post office, but I'm not going to pay it because they want me to supply my social security number. Shouldn't they know my SS #? I smell scam. They have no idea how much I paid for the cartons.
they ask u for your s.s.number?i guess the cig supplier is not coorporating to much with them.i file an appeal on the 13.50 tax over 11.99 carton of smokes.just be prepared they r the revenue they can garnish everything in your name.just dont give them sny informstion.let me know what happen.i was going to pay.but when i called smart smokers and was told kingdley was 11.99 per carton.the rev wants 13.50 per carton .well, now i will fight them.also, this payment plan.with all other add on i will pay at least 100.00 more for the payment plan!!

I think it's stupid what they are doing to us. My mom just got one of those tax things in the mail and she is on Social Security taking care of her mother. Where they getting their 13.50 figure anyway, and some of those cigarette places do tax you. Then you gotta pay more taxes. I think they need to quit spending so much money on themselves and maybe our economy wouldn't be in the shape we're in. Angry smoker
you are so right.i file an appeal to.i might not even pay, even if i win.i am on s.s.d.i also file a hardship tax form/sp pa-40.i will sit in jail.no no screw me out of my money.uncle ed gives me 15.90 for state supplement,s.s.d.is 725.00 per month.now the man that said "spread the money around" to joe the plumber,is saying the people on ssd do not need a cost of living increase!! Im for the taxes. save peoples lives.makes it harder for kids to get tabacco. hopefully tax on pop will be next.alcohol would be great too. This countries in financial trouble, if you ask me all luxuries should be taxed until were out of it. oh.. and Im a former smoker. I quit after almost 20yrs because of I was sick of being repulsive and it was too expensive. If your having trouble making ends meet..and you smoke.. GET A GRIP , there only ciggaretts!

gov ed swindell will find a way to wring every dime out of the taxpayers that he can. I bought a tank of gas in virginia last weekend...30 cents per gal cheaper than in pa. will he come for that tax too? its time the wasteful people in our government be TOTALLY accountable for the taxes that the people pay. the new pgh casino has raised the govt bank account by MILLIONS...yet they still claim to need more. wtf??? no matter how many ways they find to tax us, its never enough. it truly is time to stop this and make them accountable. I personally have no more to give...

As a non-smoker, this doesn't effect me. HOWEVER, what do you think is going to happen when the cronies who run this state start losing tax revenue due to people quitting? They are going to tax something else. It isn't going to stop!

Also, if someone would be so kind as to explain this to me...I thought it was illegal to tax something that is already taxed. So they put a tax on each pack of cigarettes (which is tacked onto the price), then when the consumer purchases them, they are taxed again??? Isn't that double taxing?

no surprise...no different than how the government triple taxes income...federal tax, state tax & local tax. tax on top of tax on top of tax....or sales tax on the same car every time it is sold. where there is a way to take it away from the working man, they most surely will.

i personally think we should tax over weight people, after all heart disease is still the number one killer in the us, there should be a BMI scale at the store registers and depending on how over weight you are you pay accordingly provisions of course for the handicapped who have to inability to live a healthy lifestyle due to no fault of their own , and that tax on the suzy qs and ice cream alone would save the smokers millions in taxes : )

I just rec a request for the pa dept of revenue saying I bought 50 cartons on a certain date. NO WAY! Over a period of about 3 yrs I'm guessing I purchased about 20 cartons but not 50 on one day.
I was going to call the # provided and ask about this - did you try that. And then I was going to file an appeal with the Board of Appeals. If you or anyone else has any suggestions let me know.
P.S. I admit skirting the taxes and will pay but I'd like to see the proof of what I bought.
I got one in Georgia and they said i owe this for buying them online but when i bought them it was not from a duty free place. I paid for them and now the place is under investigestion for fraud and so is it my fault that they didn't paid them. It was a very threating letter.
My neighbor said it was a scam.

I received the same letter about cigarettes that I purchased on line. They gave me an exact accounting of what was purchased and I ignored it. Went to sell my home and they put a tax lien against me. I purchased 167 cartons between myself and my husband between 4/1/05 & 5/23/07 @$15.00 each for @2505.00 then they added use tax @6% with penalties and legal fees and interest, I ended owing over $10,000. I had to pay it to get rid of the lien. It was ruining my credit.

Daily Horoscope for May 21

Virgo

It's a rather low-key day with a few disappointments to cope with along the way. If you were looking forward to a social event, such as meeting up with friends, it may fail to live up to your expectations. It might even be delayed or postponed through no fault of your own. There could also be problems about how much something is going to cost, forcing you to scale down your plans to make them more affordable.
