SURE wrote: <quoted text>How do you prepare your crow? These are few of the summary points contained in Hurt report: 44. Approximately 50% of the motorcycle riders in traffic were using safety helmets but only 40% of the accident-involved motorcycle riders were wearing helmets at the time of the accident. 45. Voluntary safety helmet use by those accident-involved motorcycle riders was lowest for untrained, uneducated, young motorcycle riders on hot days and short trips. 46. The most deadly injuries to the accident victims were injuries to the chest and head. 47. The use of the safety helmet is the single critical factor in the prevention of reduction of head injury; the safety helmet which complies with FMVSS 218 is a significantly effective injury countermeasure. 48. Safety helmet use caused no attenuation of critical traffic sounds, no limitation of precrash visual field, and no fatigue or loss of attention; no element of accident causation was related to helmet use. 49. FMVSS 218 provides a high level of protection in traffic accidents, and needs modification only to increase coverage at the back of the head and demonstrate impact protection of the front of full facial coverage helmets, and insure all adult sizes for traffic use are covered by the standard. 50. Helmeted riders and passengers showed significantly lower head and neck injury for all types of injury, at all levels of injury severity. 51. The increased coverage of the full facial coverage helmet increases protection, and significantly reduces face injuries. 52. There is no liability for neck injury by wearing a safety helmet; helmeted riders had less neck injuries than unhelmeted riders. Only four minor injuries were attributable to helmet use, and in each case the helmet prevented possible critical or fatal head injury. Still unconvinced? It is a nice synopsis of your scanning of the Hurt Report. And NO ONE, has been able make a clear cut, proven claim that Mandatory Helmet Use Reduces Motorcyling Deaths!

Dont get me wrong, The Hurt Study is a great resource, and I have not read it for a while. There is becoming a body of knowledge regarding the subject. Rider training, public awareness, mc license testing show on state by state basis to reduce mc deaths. Mandatory Helmet use has not been shown to reduce MC deaths. Thats all I am saying. I do wear a helmet most of the time. I do wear jeans, gloves, boots, armour or leather jacket and shatterproof lenses all the time. I am not sorry, but it has not been shown that mandatory helmet use saves street riders lives. Beleive me, if it did, there would be a federal law - the same as seatbelts, alchohol limits, etc. I do wear a seatbelt and I don't drink one drop and drive anything. There is no statistical correlation between mc deaths in helmet optional and helmet mandatory states. They cannot show it makes a difference - that is why there are still helmet optional states.

his friend wrote: another life taken too soon - wear helmets people and don't take chances on a motorcycle... Mike died doing something he loved, but he has left a family devastated by his death. His friends and colleagues will miss him dearly. If one person learns one thing from his death... RIP My boyfriend was a friend who knew Michael through AA and through business. He would like to know if there is anything he can do to help Michael's family and if there will be a funeral. We would like to attend... please post if you know of any funeral arrangements. Thank you.

I too was riding on the HOV lane, on my motorcycle, without a helmet just as this happened. The scene was distrubing because I could see it was a biker but I did not see a motorcycle or any other vehicles. I could tell it was fatal, and said a prayer and shed a tear. It wasn't until I found out exactly what had happened that the emotional affects hit me. I've not been able to stop thinking about Mike since I drove past the State Troopers trying to revive him. May he rest in peace and may the Good Lord watch over and comfort his family. For all of you who are posting notes about helmet vs. non-helmet, let's remember what this article is about and have some respect for a man who lost his life, doing what he loved, knowing the risks involved.

I too would much appreciate knowing this information, if nothing else, to send flowers.

I will post information as soon as I can. Thanks to all of the wonderful people who have offered condolences and kind words. To the rest of you who have resorted to name-calling and negativity remember... this was a man who was just living his life doing something he loved, had a job and a family and was a decent person. Sure, he was going faster than he should have been and he paid the ultimate consequence for that foolish mistake. Are you so perfect that you have never made a mistake or done something you later regretted in your life? Please... if you can't say something good about a tragedy like this, please don't say anything at all. I find your attitude disgusting and offensive. Keep it to yourself...
