Put me down for a big disagreement

http://floridainnocence.org/content/...

This happened in Bedford a couple of days ago. I am not soft on crime. If these people did this crime, they obviously should be punished. I'm tought on crime, but making them wear a sign in downtown is NOT the answer.

This is pandering, and grandstanding at its worse. This is the kind of stuff we need the ACLU for.

Humilation doesn't teach anyone anything.

Good for them, that's what they deserve, they should do that to the druggies around here. I am sure you would not like the prison warden out in Arizona that make them stay in tents, the soldiers have to stay in tents out there in 140 degree heat, why shouldn't the criminals, he makes them wear pink, and lots of other things that you would not like if you have a problem with someone having to hold up a sign.

Let's just say I disagree with you. Yes, I know about that guy in Arizona. I'm not a fan of him. He is a seeker of publicity. He is not interested in punishment, or rehabilitation. He panders to the lowest common denominator.

From a practical standpoint, this stuff doesn't work. It may help a Sheriff or DA get elected in a hick town, but the recidivism rate for public humilation punishment is very high. Remember the dunce cap, putting your nose on the chalkboard, etc. from the 1 Room School House you like. The reason they stopped doing it is because a dunce cap turns you into a dunce even if you weren't a dunce to begin with. The dunce gets used to the dunce cap.

Punishment should not be puclic entertainment for idiots.

As for shaming dope fiends, it wouldn't do anyone any good except guys like you.

As for humiliating dope fiends,

This may be the answer to your own question. It is not suppose to do the criminals good, them holding up the signs will let others know what the punishment will be for commiting crimes and will be a DETERIENT to anyone thinking of committing the same act. It's not meant to do good for anyone except produce less crime, only to keep people from doing it, knowing they will be out there holding the sign while their neighbors go by seeing them. Deterient is what we lost in the justice system with small sentences, probation with no oversight, and repeat offenders.

Public shaming punishment has very limited deterrent value. High recidivism rates are associated with public humilation punishment. Simply put, it is not a very effective punishment or deterrent. This has been known for over 100 years. Why do you think the British Navy stopped flogging?

The only thing it would do is provide entertainment for people like you. You could turn off your scanner and go downtown and point and laugh at the criminals wearing signs. It would make you feel better, but it wouldn't stop them from reoffending, and deter anyone else.

And while I was downtown laughing at them,if my neighbors were with me I might mention to them that I don't want to see them holding up signs because they were involved in criminal activity. I hope they light up the area where people can see them even after it gets dark.

If the signs on people work for selling clothes, it will work to making people aware of criminals.

I wonder why when you go down south and see the chain gangs out there cutting weeds and working, why don't they dress them up as highway workers instead of those prison clothes. That way they won't feel so ashamed. We have to treat these criminal nice you know!!!

You might be on to something, maybe that is why the police started calling the criminals ACTORS because of their entertainment value. The Sentinel may want to move the police reports to the entertainment section maybe then they could report and not get repercussions from the elite not wanting them to report.

I'm all for it. Let's try it and see how the criminals like it. Then we could just disregard how they feel and keep doing it. Think about it. It would be great entertainment for those of us who keep our nose clean.

The state of Virginia (tonight) might teach criminals what happens to you when you kill others. This is deterrent if they carry it out, even better than having to hold up signs. You wouldn't want to go to this extreme for stealing, so signs may be the next best thing.

Now we don't have to worry about this guy showing up as a repeat offender, and for Milroy, they did have a lot of family member wanting to be there for the entertainment(as you call it)but was turned away because of the number of people that wanted to be there. They only have room for a given number of people. The people out on the street doesn't have that limitation when the criminals are holding up their signs. The deterrent can reach more people.

Remember the warden that I mentioned above in Arizona that gave criminals what they deserve, maybe they should fence in a large area in the desert and put all those drug users in there and let them kill each other. Yeah ,you want drugs, here you are, have fun for a few days. Only put enough drugs in that area for half of them and let them fight over them .

Daily Horoscope for January 5

Aries

There is minor evil around today, whether it is harsh words or actions. Relationships with non spiritual people will tend to be abrasive, as you come to understand that such people can never be trusted, for their agenda is not love. Beware of criticism from colleagues or friends. Avoid being narrow minded and confining your views to the conventional. You may want to argue with everyone and everything, but beware of devouring your own energy in the process.
