Hi: My wife & I are looking to relocate from New Jersey to Raleigh, NC. However, we do not know where in Raleigh. I hear Cary is expensive, and Durham is not a good place. I don't know what East, North, South, West Raliegh is. Which schools are good. We want to live in suburb area, where we are close to shopping, and entertainment. We are going to Rent for about 6 months before we purchase so we can decide if we should go to charlotte or stay in Raleigh. Any suggestions and help would be great. Thanks in advance.

I don't know much about the schools cause I never had kids or went to any of them. North and West Raleigh are more affluent than South and East Raleigh. West Raleigh is dominated by NC State University and Meredith College related facilities and college kid housing. There are nice old neighborhoods north of NCSU and to the west of Glenwood Ave inside the beltline. If you go outside the beltline the north western area is the best place to live. If you look for nice housing in south and east of the beltline you will end up in a nice new neighborhood but you will have to fight traffic every morning. If you live near Garner (South Raleigh) you will find nice old residents scattered among droves of Mexican immigrants.

Hi, Northwest Raleigh above I-540 is a great place to live. As to the school, every year the children here get reassigned and moved around so just because you move to be ina particular school does not mean you will be allowed to attend that school in the future. We love it here but are very frustrated by the Board of Education. Go to www.newsandobserver.com and check out the Education Editor's weblog about reassignmnet. The schools here are almost all great but we get shifted quite a bit because of the rapid growth in the area.

My husband, 8 yr. old son and I are going to the Cary area this week to check things out. My husband is trying to get a job transfer. I am really concerned about the school comments. What if the school location interferes with the parents' job location? Here in Ft. Lauderdale we had to do a 'reassignment request' and it has to be approved if it causes a hardship on the jobs. Is this done in the Cary area?

Thanks in advance. Try Charlotte first most people like it better than Raleigh area- cost of living is cheaper and job market is better

Thanks in advance. If your in the Financial District, Charlotte is the place to go. If your in IT, or in the Pharmaceutical field, then Raleigh is the place to go. As for Raleigh, schools are great for the little ones, however, it is true, it is constant shifting. This is primarily in Wake County. I would suggest staying away from Wake County, and live in the outskirts or neighboring counties. I really love Clayton. Schools are great, and the house market is booming there. It's the next big boom. Good luck.

Consider Wake Forest. Great town so close to shopping and entertainment. My husband and I really love the area and our neighbors. Which by the way many are from all across the US with many from New Jersey as well. Homes are priced really well here and you get a lot for your money. The best thing to do is get in your car and drive around the different areas to see what you may like. If you want more info there are many many web sites out there about Wake Forest, but if you are already living near here then I would drive here to check it out in person. Also another great thing about Wake Forest is how close the Lakes are too, with many outdoor activities to do all year round. Regarding the schools my neighborhood for example all go to the same schools, many moms meet every morning and afternoon at the bus stop which is great because we all get a chance to get to know everyone which makes it a very nice community. I plan on moving to Raleigh, NC sometime next year as well. Fortunately for me, I do have many relatives in the area. More importantly though, I'm just plan ole-tired of Northern living, its climate and cold people. Yes in the north the pace is faster, but we've forgotten the most important things in life "Humanity"...!People think Southern living is going backwards but I'm here to set the record straight. Not true!One thing the South has over most places in the world is "Southern Hospitality". I can't wait to get there, I'll take the good w/bad any day before I settle for this cold northern state.

You start by saying you don't know much then you opened your mouth and proved it. North Raleigh and North West Raleigh are different. NW Raleigh has a flight path, N Raleigh does not. N Raleigh has more shopping than NW Raleigh. North Raleigh has more golf courses than NW Raleigh. N Raleigh has been longer established that NW Raleigh. NW Raleigh is closer to Cary, RTP and major work centers. Traffice is busy all around during work hours. Garner is not full of old people and Mexicans but is home to one of the area's top elementary schools. Should I continue? I hope you read this and I hope it makes you think about what you are saying. If you are not happy here, please move.
