Hopefully they can come up with a budget that has very few lay-offs. I didn't see a reduction in higher paying jobs, like administrators. One administrator makes as much as three or four support staff employees. Why not start cutting at the top?
http://www.buffalonews.com/city/communities/t... KEN-TON SCHOOLS 30 to 40 support staff jobs targeted By Janice L. Habuda Updated: February 8, 2012, 6:44 AM Thirty to 40 support staff jobs in the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda School District may face elimination as officials work to close a multimillion-dollar budget gap in 2012-13. The first draft of next year’s budget, presented Tuesday during a School Board work session, started out at approximately $155.2 million and was down to $153.3 million by night’s end. The projected deficit went from roughly $11 million to $9.1 million. Citing an almost 5 percent drop in enrollment during the past three years, School Superintendent Mark P. Mondanaro said,“The time has come to approach those [support staff] titles in our district.” Support staff include teacher’s aides, clerical staff, school nurses and workers in various departments. Last year, members of the union representing those workers agreed to a wage freeze — the second within a three-year period — to minimize job cuts. Support staff reductions totaled 14.5 last year. Whose jobs are in jeopardy wasn’t disclosed.“We are not prepared this evening to talk about what those titles are,” Mondanaro said. Those support staff reductions accounted for more than half of the almost $1.9 million in cuts outlined Tuesday night. The district has $9.1 million to go, Mondanaro said. This first draft also targeted a program that was spared last year. A gifted-and-talented position was eliminated at the middle school level — a reduction of $75,000 — along with $6,610 in related supplies. Three library media specialist positions were eliminated for a savings of $225,000. The anticipated retirement of five teachers saves $257,000. Less costly — at least in terms of dollars — are combining the varsity rifle, gymnastic and field hockey teams for a savings of $21,793. But the modified cross country, baseball and softball teams — as well as freshman basketball — have been eliminated, for a savings of $45,422. The School Board gave up its memberships in state and national school board associations, for a savings of $16,865. Budget development had begun with a deficit projection of $10.55 million, based on the district’s revised five-year plan. At one point last month it climbed to $12.49 million, officials said, because of state aid figures in Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s executive budget. But officials started crunching numbers to reduce that before issuing the first draft of the budget. They also took a leap of faith in assuming that two money-saving propositions—extending distance requirements for student busing and selling the former Green Acres Elementary School — will be approved by voters April 3. “Just so everyone’s clear: There’s more coming,” said School Board President Bob Dana. Some foreshadowing came from the superintendent, who said:“I will have no choice but to raise class sizes.” jhabuda@buffnews.com |

Has anyone heard that Kenmore East will have it's last graduating class next year? True or false?
