Why couldnt the SPPP just include a picture of the building so everyone knew which one they are talking about. Oh yea, that would just be presenting the news... "We are journalists" so we have to include pictures of toilets.

I believe this is a real neat looking building on the outside. They probably didn't include outside pictures of it, because it would stir up preservationist sentiment.

This is sad, and maddening at the same time. I remember bowling here with my dad in the 70s. This building was beautiful, and it's unfortunate the building fell into the wrong hands. Why didn't anyone do anything earlier? Unbelievable. It could have been a neat market with vendors that sold fabrics, food, art, jewelry, etc...

I have two pictures I took in 2007, but I cannot figure out how to put them on here. Any ideas?

Not so fast! The Society for the Preservation of Anything Anybody Wants to Tear Down will be filing suit to stop the destruction of this priceless example of "harbinger of neglect" architecture-- the finest of its type in a six block radius. This will be tied up in the courts for years and years, during which time the building will fall down of its own accord and the developer can be charged by some government agency with endangering public safety.

Economic development is when a stakeholder steps forward with a business and site plan for a property. Demolition of wrecked buildings is urban stabilization. Hurrah! It cannot get worse.

The Riverview Economic Development Association started out as a business association. I always wonder where this kind of organization gets the money to do this sort of thing. No matter what, it is about time these eyesores came down.

Amen, once they demolish this building, they should demolish the rest of the neighborhood too and start over. What a dump. I guess everything and anything that is painted in gaudy colors is authentic Mexican architecture.

This article says "The building, built in 1947 after a fire destroyed an earlier commercial club" but the story in the pdf file Steve referenced above says:

"Built in the 1920s, it was the stronghold of a venerable civic organization that at one time or another was involved in just about everything on the West Side, from the neighborhood hospital to schools
to general economic growth."

Hard to determine the age of the building by the photo shown in the pdf file. Not a typical style for 1920s or 1940s. Also, while it was not the Riverview Hospital which was located up on the bluff on Prescott Street this building might have been a clinic extension of the hospital and therefore it would be truthful to say it was once a hospital but not very accurate.

The old Riverview Hospital is gone now and homes are built on the former site. It was near where the Extreme Makeover - Home Edition home was built.
