Aug 6, 2012 Full story: local.nixle.com 9

On Tuesday, August 7th, neighborhoods throughout Montebello are being invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the “29th Annual National Night Out” crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the City of Montebello, will involve over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world.

From 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., residents are invited to come to the Montebello Police Department and Victoria Ave between Maple and 18th St. for station tours, child fingerprinting, Police K-9 demonstration, and Montebello Fire Department equipment.

Having attended the last two of these, I can attest that this is a VERY family oriented event, with many, many giveaways targeted to children, like red plastic firemen's hats, lots of candy, pens, pencils, etc. The police dog demonstration (which I have heard will be there again this year) is quite stimulating and educational, and functions as a 'scared straight' moment for young children.

Great event. Lots of people showed up. K9 demo, helicopter landed in the park (very cool) lots of diff groups, music, jump house and giveaways and food! All around great event. Best I have seen here at Mont PD. Liz had the nerve to show up. Really Liz? U call for McClures job every council meeting and have the nerve to show up? Not cool. Other than her showing up was a great night. Proud of the pd.

Is settle down referencing Liz Gonzales?
City Manager was there
Fire Chief and Captain Mowad
PD Chief and I heard a Captain was there but did not see him.
Bill Molinari was the only councilperson I saw
As settle down said- great event
Now what's the Plan??
(as if there are a lot of choices)

I agree with most of your assessments. Liz didn't return my hello,(the music was fairly loud) and I just saw her walk up the center of the road, and I didn't see her again.

I couldn't believe the helicopter pilot was able to set that black-widow-looking spider of a copter between the trees with the wind gusts we were having at dusk. An aide to Congressmember Grace Napolitano presented Chief McClure with a congratulatory certificate for participating with the nationwide National Night Out. By Coincidence (really), the presentation took place directly in front of a 5' square banner saying 'Save the Montebello Hills' in large blood red letters.

The coalition of non-profit service groups, public safety groups, and resident oriented businesses made for a very safe and useful place to meet neighbors. I picked up an 'I Am Proud of the Montebello Police' bumper sticker provided by a local business (not payed for by the MPD), lots of pencils, pens, children's activity books, laser(?) finger pointers, candy, whistles, and other swag. I also picked up several flyers with events and services for Montebello (and nearby cities) residents. I'll be posting stories about some of these this week. The Police Citizen's Patrol Flapjack Fundraiser and Elk's Breakfast are both coming up soon, and sound like delicious and civic minded activities. Mental and Medical Health services will also be publicized.

The Chair and Vice-Chair of the Save the Montebello Hills Task Force noted that they had the usual unconditional support of ALL the residents that walked by their booth. Not one resident voiced support for the proposed Hillside Condo Project. Many had been spooked by the ease with which the fire spread through the Montebello Hills Oil Field. Many others saw what could happen if the Paramount Bridge was unavailable, and that chastening experience made them loath to increase the traffic on Montebello Blvd. for ANY reason.

Unfortunately, the MFD apparently had to attend an emergency situation, as they took off almost as soon as they maneuvered their two fire engines into position on the eastern end of Victoria for public display, and I didn't see Chief Wessel again that night. I hope no one was injured.

I had a lot of fun at Montebello's National Night Out.

Thank you MPD and MFD for hosting this event!

I am refring to the Liz who comes to every Council meeting in a T-shirt and shorts and slames the PD and the chief. The same Liz who said over a year a go that LAPD was taking over Mont PD. Not sure what her beef is with the chief but come on. Enough is enough.

That's who I thought you were referring to
You hit the nai on the head
I have no beef with the Chief except he bought into some "everything's wonderful" BS
which has now been shown to be false based on the Wilsey/ Dragoo frivilous lawsuit.
But wait- there's more
Secret files
Papering the record to make it appear different than it really is/ was.
Very hard for an outsider to figure out without some helpWith several cliques (gangs) within the MPD all claiming that the others discriminate or play favorites the Chief has his work cut out for him
He needs and deserves our support
