THERE IS SPEED TRAP IN DARIEN GA. AND BY MISTAKE I GOT CAUGHT IN IT THOUGHT I WAS IN A 7O MPH ZONE, BUT I FORGOT I THOUGHT I WAS IN THE 70MPH ZONE BUT REALLY IT WAS 60 AND AS SOON AS I REALIZED THAT TO SLOW DOWN ('GOD' AS MY WITNESS) RIGHT THEN I SEE THE COP.
I WENT TO COURT. I THOUGHT THAT THEY WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT I WAS NOT TRYING TO SPEED. I JUST FORGOT FOR A MINUTE. AFTER BEING STOPPED EARILER. BECAUSE ABOUT A MILE BACK THEY WERE WORKING ON THE ROAD AND WE HAD TO WAIT ABOUT 5 TO 10 MINUTES FOR THE TRAFFIC TO START AGAIN AND WE DID GET TO GO. I HAVE THOUGHT WE WERE IN A REGULAR ZONE. SO I SPEEDED UP TO THE REGULAR SPEED. I JUST FORGOT FOR A MINUTE.
BUT WHEN I WENT TO COURT I DIDN'T GET ONE OUNCE OF MERCY AND ON TOP OF THAT ,THIS LITTLE BEVERLY HILL BILLY COURT HAD ABOUT 40 OTHERS AND ONLY 2 PEOPLE GOT OFF. THE REST HAD TO PAY 6OO$ TO 4OO4$. I HAVE TO PAY 7OO$ AND THOSE THAT DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY, SOME DIDN'T HAVE A JOB. WAS SENT OUT SIDE TO THE P/O AND THAT COST EVEN MORE MONEY. MOST OF THESE PEOPLE ARE OUT OF WORK FOR AWHILE. THE JUDGE DID NOT CARE AT ALL HE WAS NOT JUDGING HE WAS CONDENMING..
ME MY DAUGHTER HAD TO MOVE IN WITH ME. SHE LAST HER JOB IN FEB. SHE HAS 3 LITTLE GIRLS. WE ALL LIVE IN A 2BR M/H. I WORK P-T AND MAKE 1300$ A MONTH. THEY TOLD ME NOT TO GET UPSET OR THEY WOULD PUT ME IN JAIL.
THESE PEOPLE ARE A BIG PART OF THE GREEDY PROBLEM IN THE U.S.. THEY ARE JUST OUT FOR THEMSELVES THE ENEMY. THEY DON'T CARE THAT THEY ARE TAKING FOOD OUT OF LITTLE CHILDREN MOUTHS AND CAUSING PEOPLE TO LOOSE THEIR HOMES.
WHEN THINGS ARE ALREADY BAD ENOUGH. NOW WE HAVE OUR OWN FELLOW COUNTRYMEN USING THEIR BADGES TO FURTHER RIP OFF THEIR FELLOW CITIZENS. I HAVE DONATED TO THE POLICE, STATE AND LOCAL POLICE AND I GOT 5 STICKERS ON MY WINDSHEILD FROM DONATING TO THEM. I DON'T WANT TO SAY THAT NOW I WILL STOP DONATING TO THEM TO HELP BUT NOW I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY FOR OUR FOOD OR OUR RENT. I KNOW I MADE THE MISTAKE BUT THEY ARE DOING THIS ON PURPOSE AND EVERYDAY.
I SINCE FOUND ON THE WEB THAT MCINTOSH COUNTY GA. IS ONE OF THE WORST SPEED TRAPS IN THE COUNTRY. BUT I THOUGHT THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY ABOUT 250$. BECAUSE THEIR WHERE NO WORKERS AROUND FOR ALEAST A MILE BEHIND ME. I JUST FEEL SO BAD. THAT THEY CAN DO THIS AND GET AWAY WITH IT.
EVEN THOUGH YOU MIGHT NOT DO ANYTHING TO HELP ME. BUT JUST MAYBE, MAYBE YOU WILL HAVE TIME TO HELP OTHERS IN THE NEXT WEEKS, MONTHS, YEARS. OTHER PEOPLE THAT THEY DO THIS TO TOO.
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND GIVING THE COUNTRY A RAY OF HOPE AND FOR YOU TRYING SOOOOOOOOOOOO HARD TO KEEP YOUR WORD.

BLESSED,

If you had to pay $700.00 then you were going at least 20 to 25 mph over the speed limit. Even if you thought you were in a 70 mph zone you would have been doing over 85 mph. I find it hard to believe that you didn't know you were in a construction zone as the majority of the interstate in McIntosh County has orange barrels and concrete barricades on it. They don't put those up there for no reason.

As far as the Public Defender goes, he or she does not charge the person if that person is indigent, they are paid by the county or state so it most likely did not cost those people any extra money. The public defender is provided to ensure that the defendant's Constitutionl Rights are upheld.

I agree that $700.00 is a steep fine to pay but unfortunately that is the price that the courts have set. And no one FORCED you to speed, even if you forgot for a minute.

gone fishing,

the police can't take someone to jail for swerving on the road or for not having their drivers license on them (especially since they proved she had a valid license). There has to be more to the story than what you were told.

As far as doughnut shops go, please tell me where one is located in McIntosh County, I might want to try it some day.

I'm so terribly sorry that you feel like the $700 fine was too much for your budget. The story you AREN'T telling is why it was $700. You see, I happen to work out there in the midst of all that traffic that goes by without regard to my safety. YOU WERE IN A VERY, VERY CLEARLY MARKED CONSTRUCTION ZONE! And, even by your own claim, not really paying much attention. The 60mph speed limit is posted with an orange "Constuction Area" reflector constantly along both the outside shoulder of the road and the median. This is referred to as "double indicating". It means you can't say you didn't know. If you were in Darien, GA doing 70mph, you had been speeding by workers for over 10 miles before you got pulled over. So now you're probably going to get all self-righteous and say how there weren't workers for over a mile away from you (which was the only comment about construction you ever made). What if it had been one lone surveyor who had been walking maybe a half-mile away from their vehicle? Would you have seen him/her? Apparently not. So let me ask you a question. How would you feel if it were your child out here working to make a living and someone else was saying the same? The amount of money you make doesn't make me feel worse for you. I know several people out here working on the roads who don't make any more than that. I see so many horrible traffic collisions that could have easily been avoided if people would just slow down and pay attention. If nothing else for the caution of their own lives. I don't see your point at all and I applaud the police, sheriff's department and judicial system of McIntosh County for making sure you WON'T do it again. Life is hard for all of us. Not just you.
This world would be a much better place if people would quit being "poor pitiful me" and look out for their fellow man a little bit more. But "some construction worker" on the side of the interstate may be what you fail to notice next time. And if that ever happens, this may be the only chance I ever get to tell you to let my wife and kids know that you just didn't notice me. Let's see how that goes for you...

I understand where you are coming from.My Dad was an engineer(spelling??) with the DOT for some 30+ years.I do have all respect for the workers and I always slow down(under the speed limit). But,I can also understand where this guy is coming from.I drive I95 everyday and it is quite confusing at times and the workers are not visible for some distance..at times.I can understand that this man may be telling the truth.

It is satisfying to know that some things never change in McIntosh County and southeastern Georgia. About 25 years ago, while returning to Florida, I was stopped just past Cathead creek. When I got back into my vehicle I was laughing and the person traveling with me was very perplexed. I showed them the cash receipt I had received from the two officers. I said “I just paid for dinner for two of Georgia’s finest.” The sarcasm wasn’t lost on my passenger, since the cash receipt was like the ones you still get at many eateries. You have to remember there is a long history of law enforcement types in your county and southern Georgia trying to update and refine the image of the corrupt southern cop (note I didn’t say correct.) Some of you, of a certain age, will remember when Lester Maddox had billboards erected on either side of Ludowici warning about the speed trap there. Time magazine even did an article on it almost forty years ago. I am sure, giving the longevity of the practice, speed traps will be around for some time; a really good revenue stream is generated.

I know this is an old post, but I work in an area that deals with payments for Darien, GA tickets and with other tickets from around the country and I can tell you from dealing with these tickets everyday that this is DEFINITELY a speed trap. And to the guy who said they should have to pay $700 for speeding in a construction zone, i say crap. That construction was completely nearly a year ago. They leave that area setup that way on purpose so they can charge outrageous fines. There is no construction zone, it's all for show. They are all crooks out there in Darien and they know it too. Don't know how they have been getting away with it for so long. Just be careful if you're passing through there. Better yet, avoid Darien at all costs.

I used to live in that shithole town and know many people there.

A former girlfriend of mine used one of my cars without my consent. She was pulled over by the cheif of city police. I won't mention names, but he was the guy arrested for exposing himself to school girls and is still employed by either the city or county.

Anyway, when he ws told who the car belonged to, he came and arrested me for allowing her to use the car. I didn't know she had it.

In court, the former g/f and I both explained that I was unaware of her taking the car but since I declined to press theft charges against her, I was fined $732, she was released without charge.

I paid the fine and for some odd reason, kept the the receipt.{Usually I throw stuff like away}

A couple years later, I get pulled over in Waycross and it turns out my license had been suspended by the state for failure to pay that fine. I was arrested in Waycross for driving while suspended and bonded out.

I go back to McIntosh county to get it straightened out and my case was the start of the fall of the clerk at the time. She had been stealing fine money for years and many people found themselves in the same situation as I did.

In Waycross, the PD told me to just plea guilty because my license was suspended when I was stopped for a seatbelt violation but I told that fat pig bitch I was not supposed to be suspended and since she was of no help at all, she should call Jenny Craig and spend her time learning not to eat and I would take care of this myself. I represented myself and won the case and as a result of that stop in Waycross, the McIntosh court clerk went under investigation and charged with theft. But, knowing how McIntosh county works, I am sure she is still employed there and on county payroll.

Six years later, the same cheif of city police {the sex offender guy}, before his arrest, offered me $500 to burn down the house of his across-the-street neighbor. I refused and he later pulled me over and took me to the cemetary near the county works building and threatened to shoot me if I did not take care of his neighbor. My brother worked at the county works building and he and several of his co-workers heard the threats.

That is when I left McIntosh for good.

I got burned in Darien two weeks ago, 76 in a 60, I was moving along with traffic and happened to be in the left lane when Barney hit me with the lazer. I guess I was going 1 mph faster than the cars around me (and driving a Lexus) so he pulled me over. Get this, he told me he didn't know how much the fine was and said I should call the number on the ticket to find out. I called and it's $416 dollars. Guess Barney can't deal with citizens freacking to fuck out on the side of I-95 so he defers to the phone call. Take a good look at how far that construction zone extends and then observe how much actual contruction is going on. They leave the signs up to increase the fines, even after the work is done. I'll pay my fine, they got me. But never again...

McIntosh county has been known as corrupt and twisted for many, many years.

In the ealry 60's there was a red light at the bottom of the bridge between Glynn & McIntosh. The red light was ordered to be put up UPSIDE DOWN - red light on bottom, green light on top. Any traveleoer who was color blind would inadvertantly "run" the redlight!! Geez, they mad emoeny off that until someone finally contacted the state and it was changed. The light is no longer there.

Also, any out of state tag was automaticlly a target, as well as a Glynn county tag. Some kind of rivalry between Glyyn & McIntosh I assume. Seems not much has changed in this area either.

And anyone who has heard of McIntosh county knows about Sheriff Popwell and his wild hogs - if a hunter killed a wild hog, he would be charged because the hog "belonged" to Popwell. But, if a hog ran out in front of you car and caused any damage, it was just a wild hog! There was even a country song written that was played on local stations in the late 70's -early 80's "Ya don't shoot hogs in McIntosh County"

Ya gotta love the good ol'boy network of politics.

In more recent years, the county is know as either "McIntrash" or "CrackIntosh"

This is absolutely correct. I had almost the exact same experience. And I've never seen anyone constructing anything there.

My boyfriend and I have also had a run in with this garbage dump of a city....My boyfriend got a no proof of insurance ticket(Not not having insurance, but just not having his card on him, when he was not driving his car!) They pulled him and his friend over out of jurisdiction. He went to go fight it, and the cop admitted he was out of jurisdiction!!! they started lying and even though my boyfriend proved his innocence, the judge said "well even though you have proved a point, im still going with my officers"....THEY FINED HIM $860 DOLLARS!!! for not having your insurance card on him!??! YA RIGHT!!! I think its time for a class action lawsuit....if your interested in teaming up against the bullys, let me know!

I have a weekend house in McIntosh County. I also have a police scanner. You should hear the radio traffic of stops on I-95. Reminds me of Ludowici in the 60s & 70s. Everything down here is crooked. We get no services from the County....Water, Sewer, Trash pickup, etc. Yet the tax millage rate jumped to 28 mils a few years ago. You'd think we lived next door on St. Simons Island. You get out on the roads to go to the store and they see your "out of town" license plate and BAM....you've had it! We have a St Patricks day parade here and somewhere around 10-12 thousand people come. They almost literally reach into their pockets and take 2-3 hundred dollar bills out and throw them on the ground and go home. Yet the Sheriffs office harasses everyone here. It's disgusting. We have a new sheriff. A few months after the election, his deputies got into a high speed chase on I-95. Orange barrels everywhere! Wrecked 6 county deputy cars. Didn't catch the motorcyle. Hopefully 2012 elections will correct several bad situations...locally and nationally! Incidentally, the local school system is just as bad. Refer back to tax millage mentioned above.
