The newspapers, in the area of Ky.where the aluminum smelters are, has big headlines about the recent electric rates the smelters will be charged, due to the power companies having to convert to natural gas from coal. The melters ,there are two, indicate they can no longer work at a profit, will have to close,as they are not able to absorb the increase. They are two smelters of only eight left in the U.S.These two make the special aluminum used in the manufacture of our military weapons.Guess we may have to buy our aluminum from China,as they are building new plants in China, where cheap coal is used.

The power companies have indicated the switch over will cost millions, they have the right to bill customers for the costs, and have advised of this increase to their customers, including the manufacturing ones and the private home customers.
The bills for private homes, means the homes will not ,also,be able to aford electricity. Not only that, but the smelters will put 2000 out of work.

The power companies and the smelters have asked Gov.Beshear to maybe step in and help with cutting the taxes for these companies and citizens. The Gov. has not responded.

Looks as though Obama and the EPA have helped our Country and citizens, again.Kill coal, run the electricity rates up so far the people will be living in the dark!! Third World Country!!

Thanks Obama and administration!!

LOUISVILLE, Ky.— An aluminum company warned Monday that its nearly 800-employee Hawesville smelter in western Kentucky is being put at risk as a result of stalled negotiations to achieve concessions in its power costs to help offset sluggish global aluminum prices.

http://www.therepublic.com/view/story/4c77152...

There's the rest of the article. Notice it doesn't say one thing about Big Rivers converting from coal to natural gas. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

It does say however that if Big Rivers grant concessions to the smelters, other consumers will likely see a 37% rate increase to offset the concessions. Does that sound like a good deal to you?

If there is no statement as to why the rate increase,it will be declined by the Board and the State.Since this is the reason for all the rate increases, and coal was cheap before, with coal now not being so sought after, the price of coal having gone down, why do any think the power companies want to raise their rate but to cover the costs of the conversion?THIS RAISES THE PRICE TO THE COMSUMER.If it costs $300 to heat and cool your home now and the price increases 30% to $400 what do you do.?Live in darkness, stay cold in winter, and hot in Summer? What does a business do when the costs to manufacture are more than the poduction income, but close and move or just shut down and quit? How many have to lose their jobs? Now we all like clean air,but the EPA seems to have gone far beyond what can be accepted.

Thanks Obama, kill coal. Thanks Obama,no more drlling for oil,Thanks Obama for not allowing the pipeline from Canada. After all.the people can just draw food stamps---that is until the Country runs out of money---as seems to have already happened.Debt to China and other Countries and the American citizens--$20 trillion by next year?

Didn't read the article did you? Or did you just not understand what you were reading? Big Rivers STILL USES COAL!!!!!!!!!!

This has nothing...nothing...nothing... .nothing...to do with fuel conversion or some mythical EPA regulation. Big Rivers is being asked to LOWER their rates, not raise them, so that the aluminum smelters can offset the lower price of aluminum on the global market. Demand is down, the price is down. The smelters are essentially asking other consumers to shoulder the cost for them. How hard is this to understand?

The rest of your post is just as ill-informed. There are more working oil wells in the US now than at any time since 1984. The southern portion of the Keystone XL pipeline was approved over a month ago. Not that it will have any impact on domestic supplies or prices as every drop of the toxic sludge that will be moved through the pipeline is destined for export to China. We won't see any benefit and will be at considerable risk when the pipeline leaks, breaks, and spills...not if..when.

$20 trillion is a long way off. Spending has increased at a slower rate under Obama than any President since Reagan, according to the Wall Street Journal. Don't believe it? Check their website. And guess who holds most of our debt? It ain't China. It's us.

More nonsense.

The approval of the loan was an action undertaken not by officials who had been appointed by President Obama, but by his predecessor, President George W.Bush, as Ex-Im (The Export-Import Bank of the United States) itself stated:

The Bank's bipartisan Board unanimously approved the preliminary commitment to Petrobras on April 14,2009, before any Obama appointees joined the Bank. In fact, at the time the Bank's Board consisted of three Republicans and two Democrats, all of whom were appointed by George W. Bush.

Despite the claim that the money committed to Petrobras is "taxpayer dollars," Ex-Im notes that "the vast majority of our financing consists of guarantees of loans made by commercial lenders," that "the bank is self-sustaining and does not receive any appropriated funds from Congress," and that "the Bank's activities do not cost the American taxpayer a dime."

Isn't it time you got your information from someplace besides Fox "News", and the rightwing clown college on talk radio?

Your boredom threshold is lower than usual this today so don't be surprised if you start to feel restless. Ideally, you should alter your usual routine and do something totally different, because that will certainly keep you interested in what's going on around you. Watch out if you decide to spend money because you might part with a lot more than you intended.
